Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Ulanski is the ultimate grinder/warrior. Good for him.

Anthony Hamburg who's older brother Andrew plays at Colorado College, mother went to DU and father went to CC, just left Colgate and went back to the USHL over XMAS break. Clearly not ready for college hockey, but was a 7th round draft choice of the Minnesota Wild. He played youth hockey in Littleton & Dallas, but the family lives in Phoenix.

With an extra year in the USHL and maybe more realistic expectations he could be a decent third/fourth liner in college. Maybe DU could scoop him up next year without using any scholie dollars.

As we saw with Joey Brehm last night you can't be too deep.

Old Pio get out the tissues, Murray Armstrong tribute video. For those of us that had the pleasure of knowing Murray, this will bring back a ton of memories. For those of you who never got to know him he was exactly the person from all of the stories you have heard. Enjoy and thanks to Eric Bacher and DU for putting this together.

Loved the Murray Armstrong tribute. Hope they show this at the UAA game when the students are back so they can share in the history.

He's our John Wooden...

Great tribute to a great coach and more importantly a man who understood the important things in life and lived by his beliefs.

Hail to the Chief

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

I recall reading once that someone asked Brahms why he didn't write more symphonies. His replied: How can I with HIM looking over my shoulder? HIM was understood to be Beethoven, of course. That's what everyone who plays or coaches for DU should feel. HE is looking over our shoulders. To make certain we represent the University of Denver with the highest possible standards. To do nothing that would tarnish his legacy. To strive for championships while remaining good citizens and good students.

I have many memories of Murray. The one that stands out is when Chancellor Alter ran out onto the ice to embrace him in a bear hug after DU came back from being down 4-1 after two periods to beat North Dakota in OT and advance to the Frozen Four. It was a wonderful moment.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Bad crowd tonight without the students. As the one person in my section actually cheering loudly for the team from time to time, I continue to be amazed at how people around me look at me as the abberant one- as if I am disturbing church, or ruining their cell phone conversations, or I am just too loud...

I think I am going to just be quiet like everyone else...
I have to tell you I have the exact same experience on a regular basis. Now I just go to the games by myself mostly, but I still yell. Three weeks ago I was sitting on the red line in the 6th row, and loudly pointed out to the ref an obvious pick run by cc in order to get entre into the zone.. someone else said," don't worry, he doesn't know what that is." Almost everyone in the rink could hear the exchange.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Crowd looked pretty weak on PioneerVision. Worst crowds we've seen in a while.

Its not just DU. Minnesota had weak crowds this weekend against Union & Ferris State.

Rumor on the Blog that DU is not going to sit still when the Big Ten bolts. If true, its good news.

I wasn't being all that serious when I posted. I choose to see the arena as having been 1/2 full, as opposed to 1/2 empty but that's just me -- and it could have been worse. The arctic, sub-zero temperature on Friday wasn't good, downtown Denver even had a poor turnout for their fireworks. People stayed where it was warm. I also heard that DU only had singles for regular seats or Gold Club pairs available for Friday so it sounded like more people had planned to come than actually did. I also heard that if any students who were around wanted to go this weekend that they had to pay full price, that these games were not included in the students' season ticket plan. I can see the wisdom in not including these games, but some sort of a big discount or something should have been given to them -- any students that were actually there weren't too happy about the situation, at least the ones I talked with.

Yeah, there is a rumor or two about DU weighing their options in regards to their future if the Big 10 does indeed form. It will be interesting to see how everything works out in the future. Who knows, maybe the Big 10 won't be a bad thing for DU...we will find out if and when the Big 10 does form. :)

Very interesting. The huge jump in California players had really helped DU, as the Pios are getting the some of the top out of that 50. Would like to see DU taking advantage of the Texas boom. With 34 Coloradoans now playing D-I, the local players that DU keeps here are the cream of that growing crop. This is a big part of DU's resurgence into the upper echelon of the NCAA.

Re: All Things Denver XXIX

Pretty amazing that Colorado is producing 1/6 of the college bound players of Minnesota and that number is trending upwards.

For all the hype about California players at DU we've really only had Gauthier, Rakhshani & Bennett.

The key recruiting angle is that DU seems to be in the running for the elite for college bound players west of the Mississippi.
