Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Semi-related: Anyone attend a Cutthroats game yet?

I have been looking at their attendance: 5182 (19 Oct), 3328 (20 Oct), 2697 (27 Oct), 2047 (02 Nov), 3088 (03 Nov). Every night they have had a home game, DU has had one too. I compare against DU on the same nights (DU being the first number) 5008 vs 5182, 5564 vs 3328, 5795 vs 2697, 4410 vs 2047, and 5528 vs 3088. Both seem pretty respectable except for the fact there is no NHL so far. I do remember the old Rangers games at the Coliseum.

When the Stock Show is in town in January, there will be no home games for the Cutthroats. I have seen plenty of Avs jerseys at the DU games this year, so maybe in January we can siphon a few more.

I know all about DU's difficulty in attracting the casual fan to any sport, but in this case, I do not see them siphoning fans, which is good.

I went to their first game. Not bad for minor league hockey. Beer is still pricey, but you have the old time hockey feel. Wooden seats, smells like beer and stale ****.

I am IN...it'll be nice to get back to some games this season now that the wedding is out of the way. The wife may actually let me get season tickets next season!!! Fingers crossed!

DU's crowds on Friday nights have been some of the worst in the Magness Arena era. Saturdays have been close to sellouts. Not sure what the problem is....

Do you think it could have something to do with the 730 start time? Or do you think there is another factor?

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Beer is still pricey...

Anyplace hockey that beer is not pricey? Every place I have been in North America has been nuts. Only place I can think of not pricey is Jaap Edenhal in Amsterdam in the bar overlooking the rink. I do have to say that in the early-2000's Arrowhead Pond (home of the then Mighty Ducks) had their premium beers in these ginormous cups. I think I spent $11 on a beer, but it was certainly over double the size of the normal drafts, so I was happy with the "value".

It has to do with everything Friday. Friday's announced numbers are nowhere near the actual in the seats. Later start, but then again you have the Friday traffic to deal with. For some, even though they have season tickets on the Friday, they still do not want to drive again so they skip out. Others I know moved from both days to Saturday only. Student section? Meh, it will get better but this is a sad start of the season for Fridays, worse than in years past.

Very true on the fact that beer is pricey everywhere. What ****ed me off was that I stood in line forever waiting. Usually at Pepsi Center or Magness the line is long...but not too bad...this was long and agonizing...they had no clue what they were doing.

I don't think starting time would be the cause, it's never been a issue before & there's less competition for the fan dollar this year.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Couple of reasons possible declines in Friday attendance.

1). Magness is getting older: Video boards, lack of luxury suites, poor club seating options & too many seats behind the nets. Hate to say it, but Magness needs an upgrade, because the competition for the sports dollar is fierce.

2). Traffic on Fridays around Denver is some of the worst in the country.

3). Tickets prices have crept up. Take a family of four to a DU hockey game these days with some decent seats and you're looking at a $200 night.

4). Poor expansion planning led to a lack of name brand opponents in the WCHA. Mankato, UAA, SCSU, Tech, Omaha, Bemdiji & Duluth are not strong draws in the Denver marketplace.

5). Allowing Friday or Saturday night season tickets cuts into your season ticket base.

There are tons of reasons why DU hockey is still the most fun, most enjoyable & best value in the Denver sports landscape, but DU is going to have to spend some money to keep the program as one of the most sought-after tickets in town. DU has 8 home games this season against name brand opponents [AF, CC, UNH, BU, UND & Sconnie]. Only one of those games has taken place this far [AF], so things will pick up.

Never fear to speak the truth. Have to say that Magness is not my favorite venue to see a sporting event. You are correct, it needs an upgrade. That being said, it won't stop me from being in the stands. :)

THIS!!!

The corner scoreboards are ancient! Definitely time for upgrades. Video boards need to be upgraded to HD boards.

I'm not sure how you fix the issue of too much seating behind the net. That would take a drastic re-modelling job. Same with club seating options. Unless you made the areas at rinkside more accomodating like a club area with servers, better seats and such. I'm just not sure what else you can do.

Definitely upgrade to HD scoreboards in the corners and on the center video board.

I certainly do expect more than folding chairs when I spend $45/ticket.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Perhaps your wife is more willing to sit on wooden bleachers while you're stone cold drunk than mine :p:D:D

Very true...

Thankfully my wife is more inclined to let me have my nights out with friends at games. She is having a wine and cheese party on November 16th and I have been told that my presence will not be required. Therefore a drive to Colorado Springs and a DU vs. CC game is my choice of entertainment.

She said anything but a titty bar is ok...****...

I actually might be attending that game as well.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Latest word out of NYC is that du78 may be at the Springs game if his power comes back on.

I'll be there as well.
