All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I've been through three Hurricanes plus a couple of near misses in Houston. Lost power twice, but never for more than a couple of days.

I hosted friends & their two kids who lost their home in Katrina for four months, while I moved in with my parents to give them space. Another friend of mine lost his house several years ago and will finally finish his rebuilt home around 2013.

My brother had to sue his insurance company to get a settlement.

The people in the East Coast who suffered damage are in for years of battles, heartache and misplaced lives.

I was in Houston for Alicia (minimal Cat 3) which did a billion dollars in damage. Ironically, that winter there was a cold snap (IIRC over Christmas eve) which caused more damage. People out of town at Aspen, pipes froze, burst, temperature rises, water flows.

I was also in OkC when that honking great tornado hit (May of '99) 327mph winds (highest ever recorded). Half a mile wide. 5,000 homes flattened. There were many locations where on one side of the street devastation was total. Houses reduced to kindling. On the other side of the street, apart from some relatively minor damage, people were mowing their lawns. The last victim was a young lady who had taken refuge under a freeway overpass. Her body was found half a mile away.

Good thoughts to all who have suffered and will suffer because of this storm.

Who took Loney's place on the top line after he was ejected? Was it The Big Unleash?
Larraza and Tabrum have new looks this year. I don't know if there is a connection, but both are playing better.
Levin started showing his speed Saturday and got his first point.

Adam Murray did not dress last weekend and isn't going to make the trip to Mankato--lower body injury. IIRC, he had a similar injury last year and Jussi came in and became #1 before Brittain returned. I think Brittain and jussi were going to get the starts in Mankato anyway, but it is possible Murray's injury could put him out of contention if Jussi plays well. And that is bad luck for the senior.

(Back to tornados a friend of mine was driving a truck in '99 and drove into OKC about 2 hours after that big one hit. When he got to the truck stop, he saw the sign but there was no "there" there.)

Adrian Dater takes a look at scoring by committee.

We all knew Zucker would be leaving after last season. Beau's Twitter description pretty much said he would leave asap.
Only playing 10 or 11 games didn't slow his departure. I had really hoped Drew Shore would stay to play with his two brothers.

If they stayed at DU, at least they would be playing in a NHL city, even if there have been no NHL games.:o:p

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

I am back. Still no power, heat or hot water in the house. Have to charge the cell phone every couple of hours as all it does is roam with most cell towers not working. Made it to work today and am enjoying the electric and heat. Thanks to DG and the generator he sent, I have lights at night, can watch DVDs and charge the phones. Due to the problems with being able to get gas, I only run the generator when I need to. As such, I don't have the refrigerator hooked up as I would run out of gas much more quickly. I have a cooler with ice bags in it for a minimal amount of perishables. I waited 2.5 hours on Friday night in the cold and wind to fill up my 5 gallon gas container. My oldest son waited 2 hours yesterday to refill it. Luckily I filled all the cars before the storm and we are limiting our use of them so as to not have to wait on miles long lines to gas up the cars. The gas stations have separate lines for cars and those with gas cans. I take the train to work and it was pretty good this morning. One guy at the office lives in Long Beach, Long Island. He has pictures and videos of Sandy destroying the boardwalk and flooding the neighborhood. His car is totaled from being immersed in salt water. Luckily his apartment is above the first floor and got no damage in it. His lobby has 3 feet of sand in it and the plate glass windows are all broken out. He evacuated and doesn't know when he will be able to return to live in his apartment. This is the worst storm I have ever been through. I have not seen a LIPA (the local utility) truck in my neighborhood yet. I have no idea when I will be getting power back although the news reports indicate that they expect to have those without damaged homes to have power back sometime this week. Who knows?
I'm glad you're back in any capacity, and I hope that you and your neighbors are all able to return to normal quickly.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Still no power and it was 51 degrees inside my house and in the lower 30s outside this morning. A Nor'easter on tap for tomorrow with 50 to 60 mph winds and more coastal flooding.

Mother Natutre is not letting up.

The CAvalry is coming. Edison (Ca. Electric) loaded 70 trucks and crews on a C-131 at March Reserve Air Force Base, Riverside, CA, over the weekend headed your way.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

LIPA = FAIL

Everyday I have been passing a school that has had out of town utility trucks in it. I said to my wife those trucks haven't moved. My son's restaurant is not far from there and someone went down and asked them what was going on. They are crews from Michigan and have been waiting for days for LIPA to assign them some work. They have been here for at least 4 to 5 days now and have done nothing. Pardon the French but !@#$ LIPA. I called my State Senator and let his office know. We will see if anything happens.

Typical government waste! I'm sorry you have to witness this. I find it completly embarrassing that we can have a football game at the Meadowlands but not get the power on for all the people struggling.....

I had to sortie twice on my ship on the gulf coast and did cleanup for hurricane Katrina in Gulfport MS, for people who work paycheck to paycheck it was more than devastating. Although I applaud the NE for evacuating for the most part and not putting unnecessary lives in danger by trying to ride it out. I hope any DU fans on the east coast are safe and unburdened by the hurricane.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

49 degrees in my house this morning, no power for the 8th straight day. Luckily I got to stay at a relative's house last night with power and got a hot shower. LIPA is saying to expect more outages from the storm that will hit us today. My kids (college and above) have been staying at friend's houses with power. I haven't seen one of them in a couple of days.

Sheesh. They should at least do a "Meals on Wheels" delivery or something. In my experience, restoring power is a luck of the draw kind of thing. We had a freak early snowstorm one year in Omaha and my power was out for a few hours. Friends of mine (in better parts of town!) were in the dark for 10 days to two weeks.

All other things being equal, gulf coast states, because of their vulnerability to hurricanes, seem to be better prepared. Florida has a program giving tax breaks to gas stations that have generators. They pre-position gas near the probable landfall. Thus: they've got gas available and can pump it. Utilities pre-position equipment and supplies to speed up the process of restoration. Nothing can really prepare you for the "big one," but pre-planning can help around the edges. And can speed up recovery a bit.

Nominees for WCHA honors: Chris Knowlton and Joey LaLeggia.

Both times this year when a Pio had a hattrick, Nick Shore and Knowlton, some "yahoo" scored 4.

Re: All Things Denver-The Real XXXIV

Semi-related: Anyone attend a Cutthroats game yet?

I have been looking at their attendance: 5182 (19 Oct), 3328 (20 Oct), 2697 (27 Oct), 2047 (02 Nov), 3088 (03 Nov). Every night they have had a home game, DU has had one too. I compare against DU on the same nights (DU being the first number) 5008 vs 5182, 5564 vs 3328, 5795 vs 2697, 4410 vs 2047, and 5528 vs 3088. Both seem pretty respectable except for the fact there is no NHL so far. I do remember the old Rangers games at the Coliseum.

When the Stock Show is in town in January, there will be no home games for the Cutthroats. I have seen plenty of Avs jerseys at the DU games this year, so maybe in January we can siphon a few more.

I know all about DU's difficulty in attracting the casual fan to any sport, but in this case, I do not see them siphoning fans, which is good.
