Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

How is the tie breaker between UAA and UA_ determined if they end up with the same win/loss against each other?

UAA wins Friday, they're in the playoffs.

Basically, UAF needs 3 of 4 points this weekend to get to the playoffs. Losing in OT two nights in a row hurt in more ways than one (I know Friday wasn't technically OT but it might as well have been).

I don't believe this scenario can come into play this weekend. If UAA ends up with a win/tie against UAF this weekend then UAA ends up with more total conference points and there is no tie breaker. If UAA wins either Friday or Saturday, or if there are two ties, then the Nooks are out of the playoffs. The Nooks need three points. But generally, for teams that have played each other four times, I think the first tie breaker is head-to-head, and the second tie breaker is conference wins.

This weekend "ifs":
1. UAA wins 2 = gets playoff spot + cup
2. UAA wins 1 and loses 1 = gets playoff spot but loses cup
3. UAA wins 1 & ties 1 = gets playoff spot and there is a shootout for the cup
4. UAA ties 2 = gets playoff spot but loses cup
5. UAA loses 1 and ties 1 = out of playoffs and loses cup
6. UAA loses 2 = out of playoffs, loses cup, jj's head explodes

The Nooks need three points to stay in the playoffs. The Cup is important in the long run, but not as important as the playoffs at the moment.

Go Nooks!...Three points!

Was at the MacInness both nights. The weekend completely changed at the beginning of the second period on Friday. It was fun to see such an outstanding performance by a goaltender. Gutsy effort all around.

Easier way of saying this is that UAF is playing for their season Friday night.

Except the Nooks can tie Friday night and find themselves doing something crazy like pulling their goalie in OT Saturday night. Likewise, if the Nooks win Friday then UAA could end up pulling their goalie in OT Saturday night. Neither scenario is far fetched.

And for clarification, my previous post was for the benefit of challenged UAA fans because, well, you know... ;)

How do you figure this? Win a loss and a tie UAA would have a record of 8 - 17 - 3 for 19 points. UA_'s record would be 7 - 16 - 5 for 19 points. UAA would have more conference wins and make the playoffs, no? What am I missing here?

I'm not sure I'm correct, but I believe that if two teams have the same total of conference points, and have played each other 4 times, that the first tie breaker is head-to-head. If UAA loses 1 and ties 1 this weekend then UAA's head-to-head record is 0-2-2 vs UAF and loses the first tie breaker. We never get to the second tie breaker which is total conference wins. But again, I'm not sure I have this right.

Yes: the first tiebreaker is head-to-head only if the two teams played four times. See: http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2016/02/08/post-week-17-tiebreakers/

That just doesn't seem right. The team with the most conference wins should be the first tie breaker, IMO.

Well when you get to be commish, you can change it I guess. Personally you have to use something and it's as good as any.

But as commish, I would recommend you make the change at the beginning of the season.

I disagree, because we play unbalanced schedules. A true four-game schedule gets you as close to fair as you can get. The third tiebreaker is single-series HTH, which I do agree is worth less than conference wins.

Good point, I didn't look at it that way. I'm not even sure I want UAA to go to the playoffs. :(

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

A muted celebration since the season is on the line tomorrow, but 7 years in a row. Think about that. All the guys who played here in the 80's, when we were just trying to get off the ground and UAA would routinely drop a sledgehammer against us, have to feel good.

Congratulations, and thank you, to Dallas Ferguson, Corbin Schmidt and Lance West, and all of the players who have had the balls to play college hockey in Fairbanks, Alaska, of all places during this run.

Now finish it tomorrow.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

UAF takes the Friday night game and the Governor’s Cup with a hard fought 3-2 victory.

High five your teammate…then forget it and move on. Winning a 7th consecutive Cup is probably more memorable in the long run when you think back to your college playing days, but tomorrow’s game for a playoff spot is more important in the short term.

Go Nooks!
Get’r done.

Nooks beat the Seawolves 3-2 Saturday night to secure the last playoff spot and travel to Houghton to play the MTU Huskies in the first round.

Good job boys. Played hard passionate hockey all game and really limited the turnovers in our end. This will be a different team going to Houghton then just went there two weeks ago. We have a couple of key players back, the team is use to the facility and routine in Houghton, and we have renewed confidence going in.

Go Nooks!

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

I never thought I'd say this, but I feel kind of good about going to Houghton. All of a sudden we've been playing our best hockey of the year over the last three weeks.

UAA put up a good fight (especially at the end of both games) but it feels good to go unbeaten against them in a four game season, no matter what the conference standings are.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

One more thing...in a roundabout way, if Tyler Morley isn't hurt for six weeks I don't think we have the same success and mental toughness that we've had since Bowling Green. It forced guys to step up and lead, and it is finally what made the team click. When Tyler came back, all of a sudden we played to our potential.

Crap, you're the team I least wanted to face, took every last bit out of us to beat you last time and beating a team 4 times in a season is very tough, you guys officially have me worried.
