Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Her basic thought process is questionable enough, but everybody is entitled to their own opinion. What is more problematic and evidence of her cluelessness is her graphs, spreadsheets, and rational for her “positions.” She is dangerous. Not sure how her staff can let her put that stuff out there. They might be as clueless as she is.

I contacted every member of the UA sub committee today. Hopefully it does some good...I know I'm not the only one.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

I finally got around to attending an event in the AAC last weekend, to watch my second-favorite GNAC basketball team take care of business (two days after my favorite GNAC team took care of business against said second favorite).

I will admit it's a beautiful facility. But I still don't know why they didn't put an ice plant in it.

Next time you are at Sports Authority in the boxing section and run into Bristol Palin have her ask her mom for you. she's the one who put the dagger into the ice plant?

Let's not forget that Cobb did NOT want ice in the AAC either. And he is on video stating that fact.

However at the time some folks thought there were megabucks laying around and "supposedly" those laying around megabucks were going to build a stand alone hockey facility.
A certain legislator from E.R. was supposedly carrying our water (which would be frozen into a hockey rink) on this deal.
Evidently the bucket had a hole in it.
The megabucks laying around got picked up on a bridge that never got built but refuses to die, a road or two in the bush that also aren't built but refuse to die and a couple of other pie in the sky mega projects.
But I digress.
Isn't this the bash the nooks thread?

Only way you're getting a new rink now is through a bond package that is voted on. Which will also conveniently include a nice remodel and revitalization of the Patty Center. Everybody wins.

Probably time to dust off the Gov Cup thread to get ready for the pillow fight in a couple weeks and determine who has the honor of going to Mankato to lose with dignity.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Although I have taken advantage of the benefit myself, I have never understood the rational for tuition waivers for university employee’s children and spouses as a special benefit. It may be a relatively small item, but nothing is too small anymore (unless you listen to the hypocritical legislature and discussions of taxes or PFD reductions).

A related issue is the internal charge to athletic programs for scholarship tuition waivers, a fairly soft dollar cost unless enrollment is at max and scholarship students are taking the seats of paying students. Not so here. My recommendation would be make sure all athletic teams are allocated the full amount of scholarship tuition waivers allowed by the NCAA (an issue here, maybe not UAA), and eliminate the employee/child/spouse waiver. Scholarship athletes still pay for food, housing, etc. which supports the University. Based on internal cost allocations there should be a substantial net savings there.

If we can’t fund/award athletic scholarships and recruit accordingly, then cut athletics instead of letting them die a slow, agonizing, embarrassing death.

1. I am not from Alaska, so I can't speak to the System's finances other than what I read here.
2. I do not have children (yet).

But I know that self/spouse/child waivers for tuition are seen as an offset for lower pay. My best friend's wife went to college this way, a path that she may not have afforded otherwise. The benefit can be pretty significant, and the value for the universities involved is pretty strong — they keep talent that might otherwise leave for $$$GREENER$$$ pastures. This is perhaps truer for staff than faculty.

Many make that argument.

But the U also has an excellent “performance scholarship” program in place for graduating high school seniors that has been very successful and I hope continues. It makes collage affordable for many Alaskans, and as you mention, helps retain those folks in State. Ms. Wilson has proposed that students who do not graduate in six years pay the scholarship back.

The pay and health benefit package for U employees is not on the low end, even for staff. The tuition waiver benefit is not a critical piece of the overall hiring or retention package of the U, IMHO. My guess is that’s it’s a group with lower than average completion rates because it is somewhat a freebie and easier to bail out.

There are benefits to the waivers, but not a high priority, again IMHO.

Wishful thinking by no means will that occurrence happen because we have to prop up all the villages with free houses, power ,heat, generators schools, troopers, fuel, heat, stoves, food cards, health care, roads, airports, and anything else that they need for their living off the land lifestyle because that the way it has always been since the first oil dollar hit the states bank account.

Okay, I get that. Thanks for the info. I've always felt that the scholarship/waiver stuff was weird, because from an accounting perspective, you have to value it at $x, but the marginal cost of having a student is generally relatively low.

Do you know if they are going to have a last supper? I mean a luncheon with the finest spread that the Chuckie Cheese attempt's to put's out.

I am coming to just check out Tammie's picking pile.

I'm sure we won't know starting lineups until game time, but do we know if either T. Morley, Mullally, or Vieth made the trip to MTU and are potentially "available?"

I heard Tyler was supposed to play last weekend but didn't. Which, in hindsight, does nothing to answer your question.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2015-16 Season Thread - Straight Outta Sanction…

Obviously and rightfully so, they are more focused on Tyler’s health and ability to go on to the next level (whatever that level is) without delay. Wouldn’t be surprised if he sits this weekend out, and if healthy, returns for the last series against Anchorage. Last home games as a Nanook for Tyler, Governor’s Cup, and hopefully a shot at a playoff spot on the line.

We need to hope that UAA does not steal any points from MSU. If they do, we are probably done for. If not, then a sweep (or even a win & tie) against UAA gets us the Cup and into the playoffs (I believe). I don’t expect us to get any points against MTU (especially if we are without T. Morley, Mullally, Vieth), but any points would help.

Go Nooks!

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I'm not expecting much success this weekend.

Per the News Miner, Morley made the trip but no decision has been made if he will play.

My hunch is he sees the ice this weekend. I don't think he would have made the trip otherwise.

Same article also says no Vieth or Mulally.

Man, I look at the yawning maw of insane political choices and what it could do to UAA and UAF athletics and think back to when UAH hockey got the axe. I know how awful that was, and it was just one sport. My goodness. We'll keep spreading the word to our fans. It may be mist against storm windows, but we'll do what we can.
