Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Kunyk gathered some steam in H.B. top 10. Great series, great games, all of them, except the 7-2 slaughter... Maybe next year, we don't get 7 games? How about 1-2 in the league?

Hey, I'm all for 1-2 in the league. Face it, we both need to be strong. The minute both programs start sucking is when the more vocal yoopers will really escalate their squawking to kick us out of the league.

HI IM CHAD JOHNSON

I've been happy to see him do well. He was shaky to start off with, but he was fantastic last night in net for the B's. I'm happy to see it, because Tuukka's gonna need some more rest down the stretch (17 games in 31 days in March).

Chad was a stud his senior year, which was the only year he was The Man in Fairbanks (backed up Wylie Rogers the rest of the time). He might be another year away, but he will get a shot at being a #1 goalie in the NHL before long. He seems to be following a somewhat similar trajectory to Cory Schneider.

I was wondering if there would be any after-effects of being beaten out in Hartford by Cam Talbot (I had to bring that up). I knew of his work and saw his success, but I will admit that I had strong doubts as to his ability to be an effective backup for the Bruins. The B's have had such solid backup netminding for so long (Thomas and Rask backing each other up, then Khudobin backing up Rask last season) that it was disconcerting to be with a relatively unproven guy. I'm glad to see his success! I don't think Boston wins last night without him.

I truly believe Johson would have started many more games than Wylie, had he not gotten injured his Jr season. High ankle sprains are difficult for a goalie. He missed most of his J year.

To this day I believe if we had any resemblance of an offense Chad's senior year, we would have been a Frozen Four contender. That 08-09 team was stacked, and would have been even more loaded had a few guys not left after the Doc disaster. Even after those departures that squad could shut down just about anybody defensively. Have to give Tavis credit, he recruited some really good players.

I agree.

1) I'm comparing him to Rask which isn't fair 2) the stats don't always match up with the eye test. I've watched probably 13 of his starts: you can see the difference from then until now. He's playing well enough to start on many teams, but you're not going to supplant Rask unless he goes full Henrik with a college guy behind him.

I've seen him play a number of games for the B’s as well, and as his stats have indicated, he has been solid. Better as the year has come along? Sure, and that’s to be expected. No one ever suggested he would take over Rask's spot?!?! Rask is an incredible talent. Although I hate him being a Pens fan haha! He has darn nice numbers for#2. The B's obviously have confidence in him.

I was just comparing things to NYR's situation, where another college goalie alumnus that vied with Boston is working to unseat a guy everyone thought was completely worth the extension he just got. Talbot has a better W% by far, GAA by .71, and SV% by .020. The only reason that I ever compare the two — I think that it's understandable why I watch Cam — is because the two played together in Hartford. I'm still surprised that Cam suddenly got the playoff PT. I thought that was Johnson's job based on the regular season.

I'm happy to see Johnson excelling at this level, especially because he's playing for the team I love and follow. I just didn't think that he had it early, and he looked shaky early. He doesn't now!

Thanks to capgeek.com, we know that former UAF center Cody Kunyk and former Michigan Tech goaltender Pheonix Copley of North Pole either have or soon will possess some pretty decent walking-around money.

Kunyk's one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning -- he'll be a restricted free agent at the end of the season -- came with a $92,500 signing bonus. His contract will pay him a pro-rated $70,000 at the AHL level and a pro-rated $925,000 at the NHL level -- he's with Tampa Bay, but a scratch today at Pittsburgh.

Copley signed with the Washington Capitals, and his two-year deal is for next season and the 2015-16 season. He gets a $92,500 signing bonus in each season. In 2014-15, he's ticketed to make $70,000 at the AHL level and $642,500 at the NHL level. In 2015-16, his AHL salary is $70,000 and his NHL salary is $767,500.

For what it's worth, both Tampa Bay and Washington have Alaska connections. The Lightning include defenseman Matt Carle of Anchorage and center Nate Thompson of Anchorage. The Caps include former UAA center Jay Beagle.

Not too surprising. I don't think he skated in practice until yesterday or today. He was in Grand Rapids for the Final 4ive festivities.

Kunyk is in the lineup tonight for the Bolts. 4th line. Also a nice article in the Tampa paper about him.
