Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

I don’t have a clue what is going to happen, but I don’t share your optimism for the Nooks or the Seawolves. This third period is critical for both UAA and BGSU. You may not get another point.

You have both Ferris and UAF on the road, and no points would not be a shocker. We have both Ferris and UAA at home. Both NMU and LSSU have three series left which includes UAH. BSU only has two series left, but that also includes UAH. LSSU still has UAH but also FSU and MSU, so they have a tough road out. So it wouldn’t surprise me if the Governor’s Cup also determines if UAA or UAF gets the last playoff spot.
BSU is 4 points back, NMU is 5 points back, and LSSU is 6 points back. Their games in hand are close to being irrelevant, especially if they cannot get 4 points, a real possibility given LSSU's play as of late and the fact that NMU is playing Tech in a rivalry game.

Does anyone know why the WCHA changed the playoff format to include only the top 8 teams?

Because we didn't want to have to play Squarebanks every *ing time.

Barring an 0-4 finish, we should have punched our playoff ticket this weekend. A reward of a trip to lovely Big Rapids or Mankato is likely in order.

How about UAA and UA_ in the Final Five championship game with an NCAA berth on the line? At this point it's not the long shot it might seem. Of course, we have to avoid each other in the playoffs ...

Since losing to Northern Michigan in Marquette, the Nooks have won six of seven games and are outscoring opponents 33-14 in that span. Wow.

I'd take that chance.

'Nooks tied for 4th with the tie breaker at 24 points. Lots of things still to shake up... But...

Should the 'Nooks get home ice for the first round... will the series not be taking place at the Carlson Center due to Arctic Winter Games? Opening ceremonies are slated for the 15th of March.

Hmm.....

I think the Nanooks, if they qualify for the playoffs, will open on the the road...BUT if they finish and earn home ice. little birdies say it would be Thu/Fri and Sat if necessary series at the Carlson...

I confirmed this last night with the athletic department. Opening ceremonies for AWG is Sunday, not Saturday so they submitted Thurs/Fri/Sat as the dates to host.

As Squarebanks noted on my blog, the 'Nooks are in a good spot. The funny part is, the Seawolves are on the road for their final 4 games. Where they've won just two games (one being Alabama-Huntsville). I don't see them getting past Ferris State, and yes you can throw records out come Gov Cup time, but the 'Nooks are playing lights out right now. Realistically, UAA would not get another point this season if I had to make a prediction right now, and they fall to 7th. What I actually see happening though, is they steal one from Ferris, and the Governor's Cup becomes a battle for 4th place and depending on how others do, the loser visits for the first round...

Ferris State @ Alaska next week. This is going to be a barn burner.

While our road record for the season is not stellar since the turn of the calendar we are 3-2-1 on the road and that includes an non conference win against Wisconsin, who very rarely loses at the kohl center and I believe we gave them there first loss at home too.

Although I'd love it (and made mention of it on this thread) I don't see UAA realistically going O-fer the rest of the way. They are a tougher out now that the hobbit is at the helm, and I could see them squeezing blood out of a turnip for a couple points.

We are going to have some great hockey games in our building to close out the season. The Gov Cup could be one for the ages with both teams fighting for playoff position.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

After tonight's results, the Nooks are tied for 5th with Bowling Green, although BG owns the tiebreaker so technically we'd be in sixth if the season ended today.

Forget postulating on your post season. March 7/8 at the Carlson will answer questions for 3rd through 9th.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

Along with every other series that weekend. It's crazy how tight the standings are.
Exactly and that's what I meant that it will be settled at the Carlson. Everyone else will be done by then and the Seawolves and the Nooks will settle it for the rest of them.

Re: Alaska Nanooks 2013-14 Season Thread - On the Road to Perdition...

I see the Seapups fell victim to Ferris State’s quirky rink, their aggressive and unrelenting play around the opponents net, and outstanding goaltending by Motte. It’s the way they roll. They bring everything but the quirky rink north next weekend.

I think the Nooks may be the better skating club but FSU’s strength is our weakness…defense around our net, including our goalkeeping. Ferris doesn’t d*ck around with the puck very much. Not a lot of cycling going on. They go to the corners, get the puck on net, and usually have one or two guys breaking or fighting for position when it gets there. If you aren’t ready they will burn you. Get ready. Home ice and possibly even making the playoffs is at stake. Let’s help MSU catch the Bulldogs.

Should be a great series. Hope the U puts a little effort into promoting it.

Go Nooks!
