Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Thought about starting a game thread, but we appear to have a dwindling on-line fan base so it seems hardly worth the effort. I’ve always wondered why more students or townies don’t chime in here. It’s a sad day when an old fart like me has to start things off, but...

The Nooks are still fighting for first round home ice, but are in control of their own fate. We only have one series left, at home against LSSU, a team right on our heels. But LSSU, like most teams, has four games left. If we can sweep we are guaranteed home ice. If we get swept we give both OSU and ND a chance to jump us in the standings and send us on the road. If we split, tie, or share bonus points then everything remains a toss-up. Bottom line, don’t worry about what everybody else is doing. Just play hard, as a team, for 60 minutes each night.

Remaining schedules for the current 4 thru 10 spots:
UNO(41 pts): Miami
NMU(39 pts): UM, LSSU
UAF(39 pts): LSSU
UM(37 pts) : NMU, ND
LSSU(35 pts): UAF, NMU
OSU(33 pts): WMU, Miami
ND(32 pts): BG, UM

Go Nooks!

Home ice shouldn't be too much of a problem unless we choke against LSSU, and I don't see that happening given how the team has played since Miami. The question now is whether or not we sneak into 4th. Given that Ferris has been stumbling around lately, that might be easier than we once thought. But more will be known after this Sunday.

On a side note, this new Governor's Cup schedule really puts a dent in our conference schedule. It would be nice if that could be moved to another weekend in February next year and beyond.

If you’re asking yourself just how the heck did my team get into this predicament, just look at the matrix below. Read across to see where your team picked up points, read down it see where they dropped points. The heavy outlined cells are remaining games.

As you can see from the matrix, the Nooks are a shoe-in for a first round bye. :) NMU and UM split this weekend. The Nooks sweep LSSU at home. That frustrates LSSU so much they sweep NMU next weekend. UM continues their long over-due mediocre season and also split with ND. And the fighting RedHawks play shorthanded, but still sweep or split with both UNO and OSU, it doesn’t matter.

I believe that puts us all alone in fourth with 45 points. Or not.

Go Nooks!

Lets get six this weekend and not have any worries during the governors cup. UAA has no worries they know they are leaving Alaska for all their playoff games.

I would be happy with this scenario.

If we can get six (or even five) this weekend, and hope for a little help the following weekend, we might be able to take Iditarod weekend off after all. Having a week off would definitely be helpful; we haven't had a bye since Christmas break.

We just need to play good hockey, and sweep. We do that, and we'll be sitting pretty. 6 Pts would be huge for us right now. Anything less than a split would be devastating, and would really stink up a good season. How big are those losses to Western and BGSU right now?

Kind of ironic since there's a good chance we'll get one or the other in round one.

The Nooks picked up three much needed points tonight with 4-0 shutout over LSSU. But it sure was a rough start. We came out flat and looked terrible in the first. The Lakers could have been up a couple after one, but couldn’t crack Greenham and take advantage of our uninspired play. Total role reversals after the first. The Nooks picked it up and the Lakers looked flat. The difference was we were able to put four in the net.

Nook goals by Sather(2), Sova, and Yaremchuk. Sather also got an assist for a three point night. But Dion Knelsen assisted on all four goals to lead our team.

A few photos from tonight.

Seemed like the Lakers spent a lot of time in our end during the first...

But Greenham stood tall and quality shots were limited...

Dustin Sather and the rest of the Nooks really picked it up after the first...

Sather had plenty of time on his first goal to position the puck with his skate and still get off a wide open shot...

Yaremchuk’s third period goal looked eerily similar...

Need another three points tomorrow.
Go Nooks!

The Nanook blog had a post about some students being ejected for apparently banging on the boards. Since when did that become such a cardinal sin? Anybody see what happened? Sounds like either there's more to the story or one of the seasoned Carlson Center ushers had their underwear bunched up.

Another shot of Sather’s first goal, before the puck settled or the celebration began. About 25 more from last night here.

Another great win but unfortunately the other league outcomes probably exclude us from 4th. Still it's nice to have some good momentum going to Anchorage and then the playoffs. It's going to be a fun couple of weeks (and hopefully beyond). With the 6 points this weekend we are back on the PWR bubble at 14; with a strong showing over the next six games then anything is possible.

Nice to end conference play the way they started it - with a sweep. As best I can tell, it looks like we can end up no higher than 4th and no lower than 6th. It looks like the only teams that can pass us in the standings are NMU and Michigan.

Northern is 3 points behind us. If NMU gets 3 points with a win, they win the first tiebreaker of most conference wins (12 vs. 11). If they get 3 points with a shootout win and a shootout loss, they win the second tiebreaker of record against each other (1-0-3 vs. 0-1-3). Point is, go Lakers!

Michigan is 5 points behind. If they tie us, they easily win the first tiebreaker of conference wins (14 vs. 11). Go Irish!

And as of right now Alaska is at 11th in the PWR, good for a #3 seed. Nice to see the Nooks creeping up the PWR at this point in the season instead of slowly slipping down. That said, ALOT can change between now and selection Sunday - after all, I believe they were down around 19th or 20th before this weekend.

As if we didn't already have enough motivation to mop the ice with UAA next week, but points against a WCHA school would be a big help in the PWR. Something has happened recently to light a fire under this Nanook team; hopefully it carries into next week. Last year UAA just wanted it more and I think we also got caught looking ahead a little bit; we need to match their intensity and then some.

Ferris State has clinched a fifth place spot in the CCHA. At worst Ferris can tie Michigan for 4th place, but the Wolverines would go ahead in the standings because of Conference wins. So Ferris would be in 5th place with home ice advantage.

All the 'Dawgs need is 1 point, a shootout lose, and they will clinch first round bye in the CCHA.

Dion, Sova, and Andy Taranto are on the Hobey Baker candidate list.

Michigan beat ND 4-0. Meaning that a Michigan W, or a NMU W, sends Western Michigan to Fairbanks next week. Or if both UM and NMU win, it sends Bowling Green to Fairbanks.

Not looking good for that bye.

NMU beat LSSU in OT today, so the first round bye isn't gonna happen. Fifth or sixth it is.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

With NMU taking down LSSU in OT tonight, the Nooks fall to fifth, waiting on tomorrow's UM vs ND matchup for final standings. We will host either BG or WMU next weekend. Although favored, we didn't so well at their rinks, and will face a battle on our home ice.

I hope UM finishes the sweep against ND, dropping us to sixth. If we are fortunate enough to get out of the first round, I would rather play at Ferris or MSU then at NMU. NMU has our number at the kitty box.

We could still end up playing the 4th place team, but it's not as likely.

Go Nooks!
