Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

I hope UM finishes the sweep against ND, dropping us to sixth. If we are fortunate enough to get out of the first round, I would rather play at Ferris or MSU then at NMU. NMU has our number at the kitty box.

My thoughs exactly. NMU is a black hole. MSU is tough but considering that we beat and tied them at home, it's doable. Hard to argue with Ferris, considering our streak against them, and the fact that they seem to have cooled off somewhat since the new year. That and us sweeping them to start league play. Of course the streak is gonna end sometime, and the playoffs are as good a time as any I suppose, but of the three, I'd be most comfortable with Ferris.

Then again, there's the first round to take care of first, and I'm sure we all remember that we're a combined 1-2-1 against BG and WMU. Can't look past anybody.

Agreed. But in the meantime, let's enjoy the fact that we just throttled UAA in front of their home fans.

It also looked like we dropped a spot to 12 in the PWR, but I'm not sure if that includes the W tonight or not.

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

I'm enjoying it :D Though it does figure that I pick THIS year to not make the trip. But I'll take it anyway :)

As for the PWR, I looked into that. It's a common opponent flip vs. SCSU. Future common opponents don't factor in, so when we played UAA, it added SCSU's 3-0-1 line against them into the mix as well.

Basically:

Before tonight - Miami was the only common opponent. UAF was 0-1-1 (.250), SCSU was 0-2-0 (.000). UAF wins.

After tonight, factoring in UAA - UAF is 1-1-1 (.500), and SCSU is 3-2-1 (.583). SCSU wins.

If UAF beats UAA tomorrow as well, the new lines will be UAF 2-1-1 (.625) to SCSU's 3-2-1 (.583). UAF will win it again.

Uaf 7, Uaa 4

Uaf 7, Uaa 4

Thoughts on UAF after being able to watch them in person for the first time in years (the last games I saw of theirs were the two in Minnesota when Mac was head coach and Dallas assistant).

Dallas is a very good coach. The players certainly buy into his system and they seemed very aware of what they were doing on the ice in most situations - they had a few breakdowns - but in the offensive zone they almost always were trying to create plays and seemed smart on the puck. It took UAF a while to find Dallas, but he seems like the kind of coach who might stick with the program for many years and continously have them in the CCHA hunt. What a great find.

The Nanooks top line is better than any other UAF line I've seen. I knew senior Dion Knelsen was young and Taranto was an old freshman, but I didn't actually realize Taranto was older than Knelsen. Taranto is fantastic, UAF will be lucky to have him for one more year if he stays.

Greenham made a few good saves, he looked like he was seeing the puck well early and I thought was in line for a good night, then quickly gave up the two power plays goals. He definitely should not have given up four goals tonight and I expect will be tougher tomorrow.

UAA's Christiansen didn't make any of the difficult saves that you need a netminder to, but still most of the goals were not really bad goals. UAF didn't have a ton of shots, but most of the ones they did were quality shots as the forwards simply walked around the UAA defenders. I was suprised Bryce wasn't pulled after the penalty shot, he looked bad on that, making a move to defend to his left (shooters right) when Brandon K didn't even fake that way before going high on the other side.

Clark was wheeling and making plays for UAA, he could've fit on the Nanooks top line.

From what I saw of UAF tonight I'm surprised they are not a higher scoring team, they certainly have some offensive talent.

On Dallas: Obviously anything can happen, but he definitely doesn't strike me as the type of guy that would build the program up and then bolt as soon as a big program calls (see Guy Gadowsky). The ace on our sleeve, I think, is that Dallas graduated from UAF. He's stated many times before that he wants to stay in Alaska and raise his family here, and from my limited interaction with the man I believe him.

On Taranto: If he does move on to the next level after this year then I wish him all the best, but man losing him and Dion at the same time would hurt. But there is little doubt in my mind that the kid is an NHL-caliber talent, and I'd be surprised if he stays all four years. I do think he could use at least one more year of seasoning at the NCAA level, but we'll see.

On Greenham: I think Scott was rattled by those two quick PP goals in the 1st period. It looked like the wheels were about to come off the bus in a hurry, and then we got that first goal and the whole team settled down, Scott included. I won't lie, when UAA scored those first two in rapid succession I was having visions of the Miami and Michigan debacles.

On Christianson: I posted this on the series thread but I'd be really surprised if Olthius isn't in net for UAA tonight. I don't think Shyiak can justify putting Bryce back out there again after 7 goals. I too was a little bit surprised he wasn't pulled after either the penalty shot or the 5th goal.

On Clark: A heck of a player, and one of those guys that you can't stand if he's not on your side, but love him if he is.

On UAF's Offense: I think the issue is that Dallas is a defensive-minded coach, and preaches defense first. But there's no doubt that we have some great offensive talent on this team. In particular I'm glad that our offense has improved over last year; call me crazy but last season I think we could have been a top-10 team with a decent offense and Chad Johnson in net, but we could just never score goals.

Tonight will be much tighter I'm sure. Not going to post too much until after the series is over. I hope the CC is packed tonight. That place can be loud! One person who stood out to me last night (besides our top line) was Kaare Odegaard. He is really starting to turn into a nice defenseman. Uaa has some really nice players, obviously Clark is fantastic. I also really like Grant (said that last year), and Lafranchise. That D-man has some speed, and really moves the puck well. I was actually thinking, if you took UA's top line, Uaa's top line, mixed in a little of everyone else, and a couple D men off each team, you have a national championship contender! LOL! Good luck to everyone tonight......should be a good one!

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Right now USCHO has the score listed wrong on its scoreboard which automatically also enters in its pairwise. So with the PWR thinking UAF lost tonight the Nanooks are tied for 12th with five other teams and have the lowest RPI of any of the five so really are in 16th and would miss the playoffs.

It will be very interesting to see how far UAF moves up when the score is inputed correctly. It does seem like things are extremely close with the No. 6 or so through No. 20 teams. Right now UAF's record against TUCs is something like 6-5-6 which is just barely enough for them to win some of the comparisons. But if they play a TUC in the second round and lose, that could be enough to knock them down in a lot of comparisons. So I'm still thinking the Nanooks might need to win two series, or at the very least go three games in the second series, to make the NCAA tournament.

Well, the cup is home. We are now at 7 games undefeated I believe... Can the streak continue?

Actually they're at 8, 6-0-2 this month. Outscored their opponents 29-12 in that stretch. Not a bad way to go into the playoffs :)

Won back the cup, finishing off the Alaskan Hattrick. Undefeated in non-conference play. Home ice in the playoffs two years in a row. Making a push for their first tournament appearance. Things are looking good :D

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

We definitely drew the harder side of the CCHA bracket, but the way the 'Nooks have been playing lately I have to like our chances in the CCHA tourney.

Marquette was really where our season began to turn for the better in January, so I suppose it's only fitting that if we can beat Western, our reward is a return to Marquette.

And on another note, a big congratulations to Coach Ferguson and the guys for what was really a great regular season. Sweeping the preseason tournaments, sweeping the Governor's Cup, hosting another playoff series at home, and being in the running for a possible NCAA berth are all great accomplishments for a program that was on the edge of the abyss two short seasons ago. Keep it going, guys. We're all proud of you.

With a 6 point weekend how didn't Dion get O player of the week again?

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Re: Alaska Nanooks, 2009-10 Season Thread – Shovel Ready

Well Scott Enders and Andy Taranto got some of the POTW awards so I don't think we can really complain, as long as someone from the team gets recognized, it's been a good weekend.

But Dion did get named as a finalist in the Top 7 for the Hockey Humanitarian so GOOD LUCK on that!! You would think (and hope) with being up for the Lowes Senior CLASS Award, Hockey Humanitarian AND the Hobey Baker, he has a decent chance of winning one of them! lol

So, y'all ready to have all your postseason hopes and dreams shattered by a bunch of guys with nothing to play for? We've already partially screwed over Ferris State last weekend.

Based on how the Nanooks fared at Western (A 3-1 loss, then a shootout win after they got a last-second extra attacker goal) and how the Broncos finished the seasons (2-3-3 with the last three games going to shootouts) I don't think UAF will be confident, but not overly so entering its series this weekend.

Of course the Bronocos have won a game on the road this season since sweeping Alabama-Huntsville at the beginning of the year and UAF is 9-3-5 at home.

Don't know how the Culhane leaving will factor into the series, but the atmosphere should be electric at the Carlson Center.

Based on the history of these teams I think at least one game will go into overtime. I guess I will predict Western 4-3, OT; UAF 4-2, UAF 3-0.

We've already been through that once this past weekend with UAA ;)

Seriously, though, I don't think you'll find the 'Nooks overlooking Western, especially with our regular season record against you standing at 0-1-1.

Western can be a tough out; I remember watching a WMU/UAF game at the Carlson last season and UAF had that game won until our players thought it was won with about five minutes left in regulation, and Western came back and tied it, and won in OT. I definitely do not think that Culhane's imminent departure means that the Broncos will just roll over and die for us.

Running through scenarios in the pairwise predictor it seems the odds are about 50/50 on UAF making the NCAA cut. If all the favorites win out they would be in. The Nanooks especially need Minn.-Duluth, Vermont and Michigan to lose.

I have a sinking feeling that UM is going to figure out a way to upset Miami at the Joe.

Definitely not the time for us to be rooting for underdogs.

The loss by Duluth tonight helped. A Miami win over Michigan would come pretty close to getting the Nanooks in.
