Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I hear ya !

Lots of hockey to play, and while wins vs Hamline & Oswego will look good on the resume ,the only games that mean anything will be conference playoffs.

That said, I don't envy you and your remote chances of the MASCAC receiving an at large bid.
I keep praying for the ECAC-W to suicide against each other and drop the odd OOC game to a sub .500 team.

But, back on topic, Adrian is a west region team. IMO if another West Region NCAA selection is within 500 miles of Adrian, the committee will try to preserve the 2 W and 2E (D-III) Last Team Standing format. Otherwise, it will be 3E and 1W.

OK this thread has been quiet long enough. I want to talk about the goalie controversy. Well non there. Or the problem with the first line, 2nd, 3rd and 4th same. My point is this team has not lost a game in over a year, and none of us are even throwing conversation between the Adrian fans. It's time we throw some **** at the Hamline people and start building this series up.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Um, I didn't think Hamline had much of a contingent here on USCHO, but maybe I'm wrong...

Should be a good test for Adrian, but I'd still think they are the favorite on the weekend. Hamline seems to be a little stronger than both St. John's and Concordia, MN. (who both competed respectably at Adrian). Couple that with the long bus ride and you never know...

prediction: friday- Adrian 3 Hamline 3
sat- Adrian 6 Hamline 3

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Hamline is clearly the best the MIAC has to offer. I suspect, however, that Adrian is still the better team. At the end of the day, this is a meaningful series for the bulldogs.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Hamline is a solid team and they have started to play with some grit and toughness. They will provide a great test for Adrian.

Adrain is a solild team and from my observations last year, they are going to be a stiff test for the Pipers.

With that said, It is my thought that Adrain will win both games 4-2, 6-2.

Okay. We'll see.

I'd love to see this series, just to get a better gauge of how Adrian is, relative to some of the better teams from other conferences.

The A/Q has certainly made a difference in Adrian related discussions this season. I recall several noisy threads that seemed to dominate this board the first two years. Posts made by enthusiatic new Adrian or MCHA supporters would often generate a dozen or more responses from all directions. I suspect the activity will pick up in the second half.

The Hamline series is very signiificant to the Bulldogs for West ranking in the tournament. I don't think that Hamline have a huge following in the Fan Forum though, so you may find an empty field to catch any **** thrown in that direction.

Oswego on the other hand has a large and loyal following, and I expect that discussion on our Jan 8th visit will happen soon enough. This game will be of little on no consequence in terms of NCAA matters, however for Adrian this game is probably the most important one they will have played up to now in their short history. The Bulldogs road to respect has taken awhile because of the quality of our competition. We have gone from being a curiosity to, being considered good, to our current ranking as #4 on the USCHO poll. The game will be of great interest nationally, and provide a credible basis for measurement.

The next three games will answer many questions DIII followers have been asking for 2 1/2 seasons, and provide fans of the program exciting hockey to enjoy. Most importantly these next three games will provide the team with invaluable experience, that will be used to develope and prepare themselves for even more important games in February & March.

Go Bulldogs !!!

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I don't think it's going to matter much for Adrian what you're record is at year end. You're going to be #3 West or #4 West, or if nobody's close enough, whatever East seed to get thrown against a central or western NY team. You're not going to play an NCAA game at home (which is why I think the West will go #1 SNC and #4 ADR) until you "prove" you belong on the big stage.

The Powers That Be have no wish for you to succeed. Because if you do, you can make a case that the last 2 NCAA selections were tragically flawed.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I wouldn't say that is crystal clear right now. Gustavus may have something to say about that before the season is over...

I respect a team that goes 2-0-1 against the NCHA. Gustavus is looking better after that slow start.

From what I have heard and read, the "tragic flaws" in the NCAA selection process were prevalent long before Adrian was exposed to them. They have had their criteria and process to insulate themselves from ridicule or embarrasment.

While I'm sure the "Powers That Be" have individual agendas that would favour and support regional, conference, or team affiliation, I don't believe it would translate into a collective agenda focused on Adrian's failure if they qualify this year.

A chance to compete is all any team can ask for. Neumann had as tough a road as any to the National Championship last year, and one could argue that the early games in their run were a greater challenge providing them with the confidence and momentum needed to win their later games.

Adrian will have no issues with the decisions made by the Committee this time.

Hamline was the 2nd best team to play SNC this season,(after CSS)...
They play GREAT team defense...really clog up the neutral zone....I could see a split in this series. Both games decided by 3 or fewer goals..

Ahem!! :D

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Hamline's played great defense all year, and their penalty kill has been other worldly so far.

Their goals are usually from sustained pressure in the offensive zone, backdoor chances, or on the power play. They do get some odd man rushes or breakaways, bt it's not as big anpart of their game as some other miac team.

Having seen Hamline play 4 times this year and never seen Adrian, I don't know what to expect from this series. Could be a split, a blowout, two ties, or who knows. Two weeks to go! ;)

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Yeah, that sheet isn't quite right. Either that or I slept through the 4 conference losses, 3 of those at home.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

To follow up...

Adrian's PK is just a smidge under 90% for the year as well, and Hamline's PP is over 24%. Hamline does appear to have a very stingy defense, and the penalty minutes are relatively close, with Adrian taking about 2 more minutes a game. Some of Adrian's PIM totals come from the hideously inconsistent officiating that we see at home, with D-1 referees from the CCHA, that half the time don't act like they give a dam whether they're there or not, and it shows on the ice. The other penalties come from old-fashioned lack of discipline and other typical play that would normally draw 2 minutes. Adrian has taken exactly 1 less penalty than their opponents, but exactly 1 more penalty minute.

Adrian's power play is downright deadly, and what used to be the 2nd line of Kuzyk-Houston-Dahlinger has become their best line this season, while Skelly-Graham-Miller is still extremely potent.

Not to be too picky, but hamline's pk is at 94.2% Thats almost videogame-esque. Although I'll be surprised if they can keep up that pace all season.

Yeah, one bad night can ruin that. I do remember one season, earlier this decade, where Michigan State's penalty kill was downright ridiculous all year. Something like 12 power play goals allowed, and they scored 13 shorthanded.
