Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Okay. My gut feeling tells me that two things need to happen for Adrian to have a chance to win this game.

1) Brad Fogal needs to be the Brad Fogal that played well against the U-18 team and, for the most part, the Oswego game (the third goal notwithstanding). If he plays like he did Saturday night against Hamline, we're dead.

2) We've got to show the discipline we did against Hamline, St. Johns and Concordia-MN, and even last weekend.

If we play like we're capable, we'll be fine. If not, I'll have that to address following the game.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

One more thing that I neglected to mention:

The big line of Skelly, Miller and Graham must continue to play like the big producers that they have been all season. Last weekend they stepped up huge in the 3rd period both nights and provided the game winning goals. We're going to need more than a cameo appearance out of them this evening.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

And thus it ends. A 4-3 loss to St. Norbert in the 1st round. I can live with this. A 1 goal loss to the top team in the West and maybe one of the top 2 in the country. Ain't no shame in that.

I've had a cold for two days and feel like **** at the moment, so I'll have my final thoughts in a day or two, or whenever I feel all together.

Let's see how long it takes the trolls and other assorted idiots to come out of the woodwork......

At least the MCHA did better than what the rest of the NCHA was able to do this postseason :D

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Well it was a good game except for the 2nd period where Adrian did not play to their potential. The third period was very back and forth with no controlling of the puck and if we could have capitlized on that 5 on 3 it might have been a different story. Way to go Adrian for a good season and they will be back next season more determined and hungry I am sure!

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I thought at the time it was worst possible draw for them. A young program going on the road against a formidable opponent who has been the model of consistency. They have nothing to be ashamed off. You only improve by playing the games.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Three things stick out to me about this game:

1) Adrian's struggles to get out of their own defensive zone with the puck. On and off most of the night, but mostly on. A good chunk of that was St. Norbert's pressure, but we seemed to fight the puck a lot, and our passing wasn't exactly crisp.

2) St. Norbert's 2 goals early in the 2nd period, coming almost directly as a result of #1 above. As I said in the game thread, pressure busts pipes

3) The failure to score on the 5 x 3

In a nutshell, there's your game recap.

If we had to go out this way, I'm happy that this happened this year instead of next, because this group of juniors just got a taste of the best of the best in D-3 for the 2nd time this year. They've got another season and another shot.

We just went toe-to-toe with the best in the West and came up a goal short. We have no excuses and nothing to be ashamed of. The people who saw this game know about us now. The ones that want to continue to discredit us when they haven't seen us play can go get hit by a bus.

Very well stated!

Great summary -- Kudos to the Bulldogs for taking SNC to the final minute of this game.
Our group, on the Red Line, were very impressed with Adrian's ability to break out of their own zone, especially in the first period.
SNC responsed with a strong forecheck in the early second and scored two quick goals, as a result.
Great effort by both teams:) :) :)

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Thank you for your kind words, Pete. I wondered what your opinion would be. You seem to be one of the better guys around here.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

As I posted in the game thread - but it bears repeating here - Adrian accounted very well for itself tonight.

While a disappointing loss, I'm sure, I look back to SNC's first ventures into the NCAAs, where it seemed there was nothing we could do to get to the Final Four. Each year, something - usually Superior or Middlebury! - stopped the program from the next step. And finally they got to the FF - and didn't win it in the first four trips.

Point is, I hope it is indeed used a stepping stone for the program and the conference. The Bulldogs are very solid team - not that you need me to say that - that got a tough draw against a team that had one dominating-enough stretch to carry to the win.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

No kidding around, great effort by Adrian.

In short, I think the key was Adrian's turnovers when trying to wheel in transition. They played at times as if they had less time than they actually did. Chock it up to a bit of inexperience in these situations.

Aside from that, I'm quite pleased the MCHA showed up to play. Obviously Adrian wanted to win, but they have nothing to hang their heads about.

They'll be back, the league will continue to improve, and hopefully some of the bickering has been put to rest.

How about 1998 when SNC outshot UWSP about 63-17 on Saturday and lost the regular game and the mini game? You guys had some tough ones before finally breaking through, no question...
