Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Penalty minutes, non-con games for Adrian

St. John's: 7 for 14 minutes (SJU was 4-8)
Concordia-MN: 3 for 6 minutes (CMN was 4-8)
Hamline-Friday: 4 for 8 minutes (Hamline: 8-31)
Hamline-Saturday: 6 for 12 minutes (Hamline: 3-6)
Oswego: 14 for 55 minutes (OSU: 14-22) 10 minute misconducts at the end of the game - ugh

Power plays:
Adrian: 6-28 (21.4%) 95 PIM taken total
Opponents: 4-29 (13.8%) 75 PIM taken total

Two 10 minute misconducts very late in the Oswego game account for the difference. Oswego's only PP goal was an empty-netter late in the game. The Hamline games were very well behaved, from the looks of it.

The MCHA is a high-PIM filled league, but Adrian has shown that they can behave themselves if need be once they get outside of conference. There's some awful low numbers above. The 55 in the Oswego game was slightly marred by two 10-minute misconducts late (in the last two minutes of the game).

P.S. You really don't want to start parsing numbers with a guy who deals with the IRS on a regular basis.

I agree that the penalty stats would lead some to believe that discipline is a problem for the Bulldogs, yet the N/C stats don't appear to support that perception.

I think the expression that "familiarity breeds contemp" is appropriate for the MCHA conference. When teams face each other 4 or more times in a relatively short conference schedule , it doesn't surprise me that discipline becomes an issue, and the problem is compounded when scores become lopsided.

Let's hope the boys stick to hockey.

Either that, or MCHA refs could have a different standard of officiating, too, calling a tighter game.

Or, for home games at Arrington, the guys that screwed up the previous week in the CCHA.

I said it on another thread, but I'll add it here as well. The crew that we had last year to work both of Adrian's MCHA tournament games did an outstanding job, IMO. I'd like to see that crew again this weekend.

Yeah, that was a pretty good crew, called a clean, even series.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I can't tell you how disappointed I am to come to this thread and see that fornax didn't follow solid advice and bring whatever it was he was trying to say in the tourney speculation thread to this thread. Isn't he just a riot?

Good luck guys. I sure hope it works to get 4 teams from the West in. Not that I'm specifically rooting for Adrian because I like the coaching staffs from all 3 of the other teams involved, but if it works that way it will be fun if it works out to have Adrian come to SNC as many are currently speculating. Hopefully the fun travel policies don't put 4 in but send Adrian to Oswego.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I'm sure fornax must be very busy....probably taking some creative writing courses. A very amusing character, and great supporter for his team.

As for the Harris Cup....I couldn't agree with you more with regard to the Coaches. A classy group of guys.

I think were looking at a 7-4 split no matter what.
If Adrian represents the MCHA, I would expect them to be heading to NY.

Good luck

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Adrian 3
Lawrence 2

This one was a nail-biter. I'm not used to those at Arrington. :p Adrian pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st and had most of a power play to start the 2nd but didn't cash in. A few dumb penalties led to a Lawrence goal, and then they tied it later in the 2nd on a breakaway that appeared to go in off of Fogal's pad. Adrian got an early 3rd period goal and hung on from there.

Lawrence played a physical game and tried to throw the Bulldogs off of their game, but Adrian simply had too much talent and firepower. There were a few things that I'm used to seeing called that the officiating let go (nothing major, mind you), but then again I've got to remind myself that this is playoff hockey.

Lawrence played a helluva game and they deserve a lot of credit for that.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

All right. It's time to be serious for a moment.

Here it is.

Right in front of us.

The biggest thing Adrian supporters have clamored for over the last three years is within our grasp tomorrow afternoon. The MCHA tournament title, and with it, the NCAA tournament bid that we've waited for. All the talk, all the speculation, all the back and forth with other fanbases and other guys who crunch the numbers comes down to a game tomorrow afternoon on our home ice. The opportunity to show whether all the talk and speculation was warranted.

Someone is getting a tournament bid tomorrow, whether it's Adrian or Marian. We can go back and forth about whether this is the biggest game of Adrian's brief history, but no one can dispute that there has never been a game with more riding on it for this program.

If Adrian comes out and plays like they are capable, they will be the first MCHA team to play in the NCAA tournament. If not.......

It's all within our grasp. It's time.

I hope that for Adrian's sake that we don't somehow get stuck tomorrow on what has happened to other AC athletic programs on the cusp of a great achievement and poop down our legs, or as Jim Lyall so eloquently put it, "It's just like p*****g into the wind".

Why the late game?

Why the late game?

Just curious. Any reason that Adrian didn't opt for the early game on Friday? Seems that most other hosts of a 2-day final four tournament choose for more rest time.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Perhaps to draw the better audience. I know I would not have been able to attend the 3PM game.

I guess the logic would be that those who wanted to see Marian and Lake Forest are already in Adrian anyway, and those of us that are Adrian fans wouldn't have to take the afternoon off to see our team play.

Also, Adrian is used to playing at 7 PM on Friday night and 3 PM on Saturday.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Adrian is still in the driver's seat and is still the class of the league. Their offensive depth is just too much for the rest of the league. I think that like Lawrence, Marian needs to play a near perfect game to upset Adrian. I think Marian has a tad more team speed than Lawrence and a little more offensive depth. A late season meeting between Adrian and Marian should be great.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

I'm expecting nothing less than an incredible effort out of Marian. It's going to be a whale of a game.

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Hammer I am curious about what you think other MCHA programs need to do to consistently compete with Adrian. Take a MSOE or Lawrence. Are they one full line from playing at Adrian's level? Do they need better top end talent?

Re: Adrian Hockey 2009-10: A New Hope

Well, I think you're going to have to see better recruiting across the board. The league is starting to close the gap, and truthfully, we'll really know two years from now when this big Adrian senior class graduates.

Adrian is forcing the rest of the league to raise its talent level, and the AQ is only going to move that process along. Northland took a step forward this year, and while I expected Concordia to do the same, they're a really young program as well, and Hrkac should be fine there, given time.

Someone else said this, and I agree wholeheartedly: watch Lake Forest in 2 years. I suspect that the top 3 in the league are going to be Adrian, Marian and Lake Forest in a couple years, with Lawrence and MSOE in the 2nd tier. And ALL of them are going to need to start winning some N/C games.
