Is there still a Dinapoli's around in downtown St. Paul/Minneapolis? We went there growing up and on occasion since, and it was always good Italian food. Heard they had moved from their long time location awhile back.

Dinapolis was great if you also like Chef-boy-ar-de.

Always had very good Italian there when I've been over the years, but it's been awhile, so maybe it's gone downhill in the recent past?

I assume we're both talking about Cafe De Napoli that was on Hennepin Ave for years then moved to Marquette and is now closed. Sorry, that was cheap and ok but never very good for Italian. When I was young we went there sometimes and I didn't know any better. Later like around 1990 I worked downtown we would hit it every ounce in a while for lunch but by then I had experienced much better Italian and knew this wasn't very good.

Yup, that's it. It certainly wasn't high end, but my memories of it (mostly from 30 years ago or so with several visits since then) were good. If it's still around, maybe I'll have to try it again sometime when I'm back in town.

They need to get out more. Tourist places and tourist areas are expensive. But real people live on St. John, and they eat real food. Being that it's the US, the food places are better controled than what one would think- so you can go to any hole in the wall, and be ok. There are holes in the wall places on Islands. Just takes some work to find.

While I've not gone too far into the USVI, if you can find a sea side town, not really a major tourist place, I bet you can find some really good and cheap seafood. Puerto Rico- they are all over the place.

(other than that, I'm no help. remember to drive on the left!)
They live in a condo for a month (same one for 20* yrs, I think). Prices at the market are pretty crazy for stuff like cereal, OJ, etc. They actually ship stuff down media rate and save a bundle of groceries.

Sounds like my fiancee's brother is getting married in Greece the spring after our wedding, so I guess that's out for our honeymoon. I think we're definitely leaning toward the Caribbean at this point.

Train ride: other than being on a train or waiting for a train for 12+ hours, traveling Amtrak was very comfortable and I will take it again. Must remember to pack more food and water, though. $2.25 for a water bottle? No thanks.

As for the Cities themselves, very cool. I got to see the Stone Arch bridge, the mills, the sculpture garden, Minnehaha Falls, Mall of America, the St. Paul RiverCentre, and the X. On race day, I got to walk in the Metrodome concourse, which was pretty nice.

Food wise, Cossetta's was a good pick. The portobello mushroom ravioli was worth every penny. I went to Mickey's before I boarded the train to come home, and I love that they cook everything in butter. Hopefully I can return for the Final Five, and when I do, I'll be visiting Matt's Bar and Gasthof's for sure.

You may be the only person I've ever heard describe the Metrodome as "nice." ;)

Otherwise, good. You picked a pretty good set of tourist locations all in all. Glad you liked the train too - Amtrak should be even nicer next year once St. Paul Union Depot opens, though you'll still be paying $2.25 for a bottle of water on the train.

And about $2.00 of that is probably pure profit! ;)

I forget who it was, but one of the US representatives was btiching about Amtrak not making enough money on concessions recently. Apparently they have had trouble with a few employees purchasing their own stock at a lower price from Sam's Club and reselling it in the cafes without it ever passing through Amtrak's hands, and their Inspector-General is still weeding that practice out. They also have to educate (and pay) the employees at a much higher rate than McDonalds' staff, since they're also responsible for passenger safety and limited train operations.

Either way, it's on par or a bit below stadium or airplane prices.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Today I tried to buy a wrap for breakfast at a kiosk in the New Orleans airport. After I found out it was $12, I put it back.
