Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

You are exposed to more radiation by flying for a handful of minutes at cruising altitude than what you get when you go through one of the scanners.

I don't care...I don't need anymore radiation...

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Then don't EVER fly, stay out of granite buildings - in fact avoid any buildings made of stone or brick.

The difference is, this is not necessary.

I should also add that I did a story yesterday with a doctor and he told me how much radiation you get from a CT scan, about 200 times that of a regular x-ray, and I've had at least 4-5 CT scans.

Hitchens put it best. The sarcasm is thick.

Late last August, the Saudi Arabian deputy minister of the interior, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, was injured in the city of Jeddah by a suicide bomber named Abdullah Hassan Al Aseery. The deceased assailant was the brother of Khalid Ibrahim Al Aseery, the suspected bomb-specialist of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula and the man sought in connection with the underpants and toner attempts. In the Jeddah case, the lethal charge of PETN was concealed in the would-be assassin's rectum.
Perhaps you can begin to see where, as they say, I am going with this. In order for us to take them even remotely seriously, our Homeland Security officials should by now have had no alternative but to announce a series of random body-cavity searches some months ago. At least that might have had a deterrent effect and broken the long tradition of waiting for the enemy to dictate all the terms, all the time. It is a certainty that this deadly back-passage tactic will be tried. It is equally a certainty that it will find us even more defenseless than before.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

So, I put together another very short trip to the southwest in January. We got permits to hike to The Wave in Arizona on a Tuesday in late January so I'm flying out on Sunday and home Thursday... we're squeezing in trips/hikes to:
Rim Rock Hoodoos
Lower Antelope Canyon
Horseshoe Bend
Coyote Buttes North
Coral Pink Sand Dunes
Valley of Fire State Park (I have to find the 'Fire Wave' which we couldn't find last time)

SO that'll be an exciting albeit quick trip..

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

anybody have suggestions for things to do in Portland, Oregon? Besides avoiding talking to FBI agents? Going to be there Thur-Sun with family, looking for a few nearby things as we'll only have a few blocks of time. Thanks for any ideas or advice!!

Forgot to come back and post some things about Portland...not as pretty as I hoped but it was December. Reminded me of Maine in the early spring, very grey and damp.

Voodoo Donuts was the big hit of the trip...if you go to Portland, stop there. Plan on spending 10 minutes deciding what you want.

Rock Bottom Brewery had decent beer and great nachos. We had a good lunch there. Nike store downtown is worth visiting, avoid the outlet, it is the same Nike outlet in any other place.

Lots of food carts/huts downtown, pretty much anything you could think of.

It apparently is called the Bridge City, apt, no shortage of bridges whatsoever.

The Nike headquarters is nice, low key in many ways but buildings are very nice and they have a lot of interesting sports memorabilia...Mia Hamm's early grade school summary of herself...Things I am good at: I am good at soccer. Ya think?

Friends went to a decent winery in the area; we didn't make it to the gorge although we were told it was worth the trip.

Ok place to visit, wouldn't want to live there. Two stars.

No issues with scanning/pat downs, everything smooth, no issues observed with any other passengers.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

sounds great! I hope you aren't camping - in January - brrr!

haha NO-HO-HO! :)
We're doing hotels all 4 nights.
we're driving from Vegas to St. George Sunday night. Driving to Page Monday with a stop to hike to the RimRock hoodoos (we wanted to do Wahweap hoodoos but were advised to do that in a different season due to the driving conditions) in early light then get to Lower Antelope late morning to get some good light through noon and early afternoon and then hit up Horseshoe Bend for sunset.
Tuesday we'll drive down to Wire Pass trailhead and spend the day exploring Coyote Buttes North (gotta plan the day, not sure yet how we'll do it, but there's a LOT to see). Staying in Kanab that night. Wednesday we'll hit up Coral Pink Dunes for sunrise for a little bit, then spend the afternoon until sunset at Valley of Fire before crashing at the Stratosphere...

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

the hoodoos are amazing. as is the Wiregrass slot. its non technical. check out the petroglyphs at the end where it joins Buckskin Gulch. (past the new graffiti)

Yeah we're going to do wire Pass, as its (supposedly) quick but beautiful, not sure if we'll do it before or after going out to the Wave. i don't expect the light to be that great either time since we'll be getting there early and getting back to the car relatively late and the sun will be low, but I still want to see it...

I'm going to do a week in/around Moab this coming year to explore Arches and Canyonlands (and places around there) more, I think.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Capital Reef NP is wonderful, too.
Do this drive: http://www.travelswithgrama.com/travels/hwy261.htm
It's insane.

we drove through Capitol Reef during our trip in Sept/Oct but we both got wicked sick and took a day off and crashed at a hotel nearby in Torrey and missed out on exploring it. I'll get back there soon! :)

We also did the Mokee Dugway driving between Monument Valley and Moab. Winger has some video that I took with her camera, not sure if she'll get around to uploading it or not, but it was an awesome drive :)

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Going from just south of Philly to Albany on Memorial Day Weekend. Can't leave early enough to make it through the NJTP/287/87 route without tons of traffic. Anybody have any thoughts on 476 (Blue Route) to Allentown, and then tracking over to hit 87 in Newburgh NY? Will I miss the NYC traffic if I hit 87 there Friday, mid afternoon? Other thought was go to Binghamton and take 88 into Albany. Not really trying to set a speed record, just avoid the risk of getting completely tied up on the NJTP or 287.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I think you'd be OK with 287 north in Jersey. You'd be going the opposite direction from any Shore/Poconos traffic, and it sounds like you'd be early enough to avoid any traffic headed out of Philly. If you're worried about the NJTP then it might be reasonable to take 476 up to Allentown on your way out of the city, but then take 78 East to 287 and then go up 287 to 87.

On the other hand, while Google Maps defaults to the NJTP-287-87 route that you want to avoid, if you tell it to go via Allentown then it sends you via US-22, PA-33, US-209 up to Port Jervis and then I-84 over to Newburgh, which I think is what you were saying all along (unless you meant you were going to go all the way up to Scranton and then across on I-84), and which is apparently shorter than the route I just suggested, so maybe that makes sense.

But... gosh, if you're leaving early enough that you're going to be in Newburgh by midafternoon then I just don't think you'll hit much traffic until that point anyway. You'll be ahead of the traffic out of Philly I would imagine and that's the worst part. Coming up 287 through Jersey is easy, like I said. But I don't drive out of the city much and don't know whether you might potentially get stuck on 87 starting right past the NJ/NY border with traffic coming across from the Tappan Zee. In any case it certainly seems like going up to Binghamton is excessive, and that's just in terms of the extra distance (something like 90 miles longer than the most direct route) and disregarding the fact that I-88 is the most boring stretch of highway in the universe.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

If anyone's interested, I have a page on my website with photos from each day of our trip:

also has a link to our blog...
enjoy!

I'm only 5 months late to the party....great pictures, we did various portions of that trip a few years ago and loved it! Glad you liked the Moki Dugway.....it's an amazing 4-5 miles.
