Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

So we leave for our southwest adventure in 18 days (not that I'm counting)..
We'll be camping for most of the trip and have made reservations along the way for the first few nights and last few nights, but left it open in the middle, which will primarily be spent in/around Moab (Arches/canyonlands/Deadhorse Point S.P.) so we don't burn out, and will be able to take time to recharge and do laundry, etc....
Our (still tentative) itinerary includes:
Vegas>
Valley of Fire S.P.>
Coral Pink Sand Dunes S.P.>
Page, AZ>
Grand Canyon North Rim>
Monument Valley>
Goosenecks State Park>
Moab>
Arches>
Island in the Sky, Canyonlands>
Dead Horse Point State Park>
Goblin Valley S.P.>
Capitol Reef National Park (just a quick drive through)>
Bryce Canyon N.P.>
Zion N.P. (going to attempt to hike to Angels Landing our last day)>
Vegas (Might hit Red Rocks Canyon the last morning before flying home.

Decided to take a VERY quick trip to Pittsburgh tomorrow>Monday AM for UNH/Pitt football at Heinz Field.. the only other plans are to hit the zoo at some point on Sunday. Any ideas of what to see/do while in town for a day or two?

Just don't get drunk and go into a single stall bathroom.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

Has anyone been to Jordan? Am looking at this for my Jan-Mar 2011 trip. Lots of nice archaeological sights, Petra, Pella and Jerash along with a crusader fort or two. Wondering about safety, food any other possible issues. Is a visa required for US citizens? Plus I will probably add at least one day in Amman, anything to do in the city. Also since the trip is only 8 days, I am wondering how difficult it would be to go to Jerusalem from there to spend a few days.

I went to Jordan back in the late '90's for a week or so. I really enjoyed it.

- Petra is an absolute don't miss. I spent 1½ days there and you could easily spend more. One of my favorite travel souvenirs is an ornate "bedouin knife" I bought there. But it's quite crowded. You'll need to do some hiking to get away from the tour buses.

- I did Jerash as a day trip from Amman. Get your hotel to write "Jerash" in Arabic on a slip of paper, and head to the bus station. Show the paper to the drivers, and they'll get you on the right bus. Getting back to Amman is easy.

- I hired a taxi and guide for a day tour of the desert forts. It was interesting, but a lot of travel and expense for a few crumbling structures.

- Amman has quite a few sights, most notably its Roman ruins and amphitheater.

- I also spent a couple of days in Aqaba. It's assumed if you're a foreigner in Aqaba, you must be there for the diving. I wasn't. The city itself doesn't have much to offer unless you're a diver or maybe a birdwatcher.

- One thing I did from Aqaba was take a afternoon jeep tour of Wadi Rum (where Lawrence of Arabia had his HQ) followed by a touristy dinner in a "Bedouin Tent." It was campy, and the food was nothing special, but being in the desert at night is like no other experience.

Regarding going from Jordan to Israel, I've never done it, but you need to be careful if you plan to travel to other countries in the Middle East that prohibit your entry if you have been to Israel. The Israelis are aware of this, of course, and will stamp a separate paper and put that in your passport instead. However, the Jordanians will not. Therefore, your passport will have a stamp for a known crossing into Israel. That is as good as an Israeli stamp when it comes to restricting entry to those "peculiar" countries.

When I went, you could buy your Jordanian visa at Amman airport. I don't know if that's still the case.

Food is typical middle-eastern. I don't remember much in the way of other ethnic or western cuisines. Lots of seafood in Aqaba. Don't drink the water.

Going to Delaware in late October and probably going to spend 1 day in Baltimore, maybe go to the Aquarium. Anything else I should do there? I've been there briefly twice (once for the Aquarium and Ruth Museum and once for an Orioles game). And is there anything interesting to do in Delaware? I'll be in either Newark or Wilmington. My previous Delaware experience consists of numerous visits to the Concord Mall, but that's it. :o

I have nothing constructive to add, but when I saw this all I could think of was Wayne's World
"Imagine being able to be magically whisked away to.... Delaware.... Hi.... Wer're in.... Delaware" :D

If you're looking for a place for dinner in Baltimore, a friend of mine works (maybe used to work, I'm not completely sure) at The Brewer's Art, a really cool restaurant/brewpub that was ranked one of the Best Bars in America by Esquire and listed as one of the 125 places to have a beer before you die by All About Beer Magazine.

:) It's mooncake season..

It's also a public holiday here in Hong Kong -- the Mid Autumn Festival, that is; kind of like the Chinese Thanksgiving. No work, no school. People headed out last night, a lot of them carrying cool lanterns, to go look at the moon, eat those famous mooncakes, etc.

Since this thread is for advice as well as questions, if you're planning a trip to Hong Kong then fall is definitely the time to go. Starting just about now and running through Christmas is when you get the beautiful weather: sunny, low humidity, light breezes. I haven't been to Hawaii, but people say it's like that. In the summer through mid-September you still get typhoons, and very hot and humid weather; and in January you start with the cold, gray, rainy season weather. But in-between is really nice.

Re: A Thread for Travel: Trips/Advice/Ideas

My brother is doing a semester abroad in England currently, Liverpool to be exact, and I've convinced my mother that we must go visit him at some point. We're thinking of leaving on a Friday night returning the following Sunday (10 days). I'm in charge of putting this trip together so I'm thinking of spending 1/2 to 2/3 or the time in Liverpool/London and the remainder somewhere else in Europe, but wasn't sure what the best use of my time might be. So naturally, the first idea that popped into my head was to post to the travel thread on a college hockey messageboard (:) ). I've been to England previously ('92) and was just in Paris last September. I've been looking at taking a train somewhere (Italy, Denmark). If I have 2-4 days, where might some good places to go be? Roughly, this would be the beginning of December.

Jealous. I had a blast in Liverpool 2 years ago, it's turned (turning? construction was going on while we were there) into a real nice city.
