Re: 95th Season of Hockey- Michigan Tech Huskies 2015-2016 - Thread #1

Daver Karnosky writes about MTU hockey for the DMG but it's behind a paywall, so no point in posting here...he's a good writer, wrote for the Lode and helped with Tech Hockey Guide before we took our break.

Does he write any features? His interview "questions" are really just invitations for Mel and the players to recite their go-to cliches. "How important was it...?" "What was working for you?" "How do you build off this?"

Here are two players from another team answering Daver-esque questions. I stumbled upon this and had to laugh. If you're not invested in that team it will become painfully apparent how pointless the exercise is. There is absolutely no insight to be gained from the players' answers, because the interviewer isn't trying to do anything but collect quotes.

What has happened to the Mining gazette coverage of the Huskies?. We used to have a beat writer. Now not so much. If he's there, he's disgusting himself very well. I think they are missing the boat in not doing more Tech Hockey coverage. Can't they at least have a weekly column?!
Tech hockey gets more words in the Gazette than they have in years, if ever, because Daver's strength is that he's extremely conscientious about documenting every important play in every game. Great attention to detail as a reporter. I think his opinion column is weekly but doesn't ruffle any feathers there, generally supportive & optimistic.

...that's kind of the point of sports journalism. If you try to be controversial, you're going to get your press pass revoked.

I believe if you use the app it is free to read.

This is the same thing I saw. I guess they had to be separated in the press box after the game.

From the LSSU side of things, some of Damon's thoughts were posted on the LSSU page.

Had the refs just called the checking from behind late in 2nd correctly, I don't think things would have gotten out of hand. To miss the check from behind on LSSU, and call a hooking penalty on Tech seconds later started to send things out of control.

Just listened to Coach Whitten's Monday night show; sounded to me like he expects an apology from Coach Pearson at some point. Also sounded like he felt all the majors, games and DQ's were bad calls. Said head of refs agreed? Claimed the head of refs was very upset with his team (of refs). Interesting how different each coaches perspective is.

Hmmm. well that wasn't the game I saw. I did notice that Defiel got stitches when he went off to the room and was all mad and then came back and played with them across the bridge of his nose, but our players can tell you- mouth off to the ref,... you are doing time.

The next call between Mel and Damon shouldn't be an apology it should be Mel telling him Tech isn't going to play his ****ty goon squad any more than is required by the WCHA.

WOW pretty much opposite views and expectations. Gonna be ugly next match.

I don't think so, I actually think Damon and Mel are a lot alike and they probably realize that too. They're hyper-competitive, proud, protective of their players, and whether or not Damon was completely truthful about what Shepard told him, I can believe both their perspectives on the hits and penalties are honest, from what each of them saw. I like the loyalty and the compete level from both of them.
Damon wanting to be a "rivalry" and "take what they've got" is like the 14-year-old little brother picking a fight to prove himself.

I think Damon is exaggerating the fact that Shep is mad at his refs for issuing DQs...I doubt he can really question the calls themselves, just that the 2 were DQs and not misconducts.

You must not have listened to the whole show. Damon Whitten said Henke crossed the edge and hurt the team with his CFB penalty. He did say that he didn't think there should have been a DQ and that Greg Shepherd, supervisor of officials, agreed. He didn't have any problem with the CFB major penalty being called . Damon previously has said that Globke's Abuse of Officials penalty was unacceptable and also hurt the team. He also said that Shepherd agreed with him that the refs blew the CTH major penalty on Hults; he didn't specifically say whether a 2 minute call would have been more appropriate but I doubt he would have had a problem with it. Damon said he and Mel will be fine and he had a lot of nice things to say about Mel. He said both are fierce competitors.

The same two refs worked the games in the Soo against BG. Damon said pretty much said the same thing about his conversation with Shep after that series, neither team should have been happy with the whole crew that weekend. Very inconsistent penalty calls and numerous off sides missed or called when it wasn't. From personal experience with Damon I don't think he is a liar but is he exaggerating I have no clue.

Damon didn't have any problem with the basic penalty calls for those two majors. He didn't like that DQs were called instead of misconducts.

This is pretty much what I got out of it as well. Damon was more peeved about the complete change in how they called Friday vs. Saturday. He mentioned that he texted Shepherd and complimented their approach to Friday's game. Then joked that no good deed goes unpunished and Saturday was the result.
Crawford took Mel's fiestiness more as an insult and a knock on his professionalism than Damon. Damon basically said Mel's a feisty competitor and it's not a big deal. They will both calm down, let by-gones be and move on. I thought Damon's joke about what he was going to do on Twitter was funny, but glad he thought better of it. It was a good judgement call on his part to not potentially make things worse.

I understood your reasoning. I just disagree. :)
Respectfully, of course.
Akkk.... respectfully? !!!. I hate that word. Thats a word you use for old, doddering codgers with a cane and false teeth. You know kind of like ... well.. .HF, or maybe Coach Pearson.... but certainly not Moi. click , click, ;)

Lower down I said Defeil got stitches, but it was Globke.
Bemidji is certainly playing well these days, now if BG can beat Miami. Those 2 losses to wmu are hurting everyone.

I did listen to the entire interview; at one point in the interview he was down playing the CFB penalty saying Henke more or less came in back to back with Vallis and that a hit from behind about 4 minutes earlier by a Tech player that "left his feet" was as bad and didn't get a call. The only difference being Vallis went more awkwardly in to the boards causing his injury. I don't think that Coach Whitten was against a penalty in that instance and maybe would have even been ok with the major, had a major or at least a penalty been called in the instance he brought up.

I like Daver and I like how thorough he is, but he gets bogged down in the details sometimes. It makes it harder to read. I'd rather he take a bigger picture view. No one really cares about every scoring opportunity, they'd rather get an overall impression of how the game went, who controlled play, etc.

Re: 95th Season of Hockey- Michigan Tech Huskies 2015-2016 - Thread #1

Played with the PWR predictor for a bit, just for this next weekend. Picking what I think is the most likely outcome of each game, gets Tech up to a tie for 14th, (lose the 3 way tiebreaker, to sit at 16th).

Key games:

RMU vs. Army (x2) - I picked Bob Morris to sweep Army, we want Army to get 1 win out of this, as it would knock Bob Morris below Tech, and Tech would be 14 or 15 at that point.
Quinnipiac vs. Clarkson (x1) - I picked Quinnipiac to take care of Clarkson. This will be a close, and important game. Clarkson will jump up quite a bit with a win against #1.
Harvard vs. RPI (x1) - I picked Harvard to win. We want Harvard to win, as RPI is a bubble team.
Clarkson vs. Princeton (x1) - I picked Clarkson to beat lowly Princeton. If Princeton could pull this off, that will knock Clarkson down significantly.
Yale vs. Cornell (x1) - I picked Yale to beat Cornell. This one should be close too, I picked the higher ranked team. We want Yale to win this, obviously.
Yale vs. Colgate (x1) - I picked Yale to beat Colgate. We want Yale to win as much as possible.
Cornell vs. Brown (x1) - I picked Cornell to beat Brown, if Brown wins, we'll move up further than the 15-16 range.
Dartmouth vs. Union (x1) - I picked Dartmouth to win, it would be better for us if Union won.
RPI vs. Dartmouth (x1) - I picked RPI over Dartmouth. This seems like a toss-up. Not sure which would be better.
BC vs. UMass-Lowell (x1) - I picked BC to beat Lowell, we want BC to win this.
BU vs. UMass-Lowell (x1) - I picked BU to beat Lowell, we want BU to win this.
Notre Dame vs. Maine (x2) - I picked Notre Dame to sweep. Any wins Maine could get here, would help.
Mankato vs. Huntsville (x2) - I picked Mankato to sweep. We play both of these teams twice this year, so I think the best we can hope for is a Mankato QWB boost.
FSU vs. NMU (x2) - I picked a split. I don't think there is a positive or a negative here.
BSU vs. LSSU (x2) - I picked a BSU sweep. I believe it would be slightly better if LSSU got a win against BSU.
Western vs. UNO (x2) - I picked a split, these teams are pretty close together in standings, UNO is sucking lately. We want Western to beat UNO.
UND vs. DU (x2) - I picked a UND sweep. We want UND to sweep.
Penn st. vs. MiSU (x2) - I picked a split, we want Michigan State to win.
MN vs. OSU (x2) - I picked a split, we want an OSU win.
BGSU vs. Miami (x1) - I picked BGSU. This is the big one, we really want BGSU to beat Miami.
