Re: 95th Season of Hockey- Michigan Tech Huskies 2015-2016 - Thread #1

Yeah it seemed like Mel was just really disappointed Damon didn't have more control of his team on Saturday.

Takeaways from Mel Pearson show:
L'Esperance, Heinonen, Gould, Petan didn't have points - good to demonstrate others can score, all 4 lines starting to get to that point
Hyland played excellent - credit to him after only playing 1 game this year - was told he worked really hard when team away at BGSU
Gillies doesn't realize how good he can be

Whitten/Pearson in handshake line
There was no pushing. Emotions were high.
Whitten did a great job here at Tech. Disappointed with how game went.
Friday was hard play. Saturday, once game was 3-0, a hit at end of 2nd was bad from behind. No need for that kind of hit in hockey. Came all the away across the ice, direct hit from behind into boards.
Talk to our team weekly to be careful around the boards. Could sense things were getting out of control. Told team in 3rd let refs keep control, stay out of bologna.
In 2nd, Luchini took roughing, really mad at Jake. Don't want to see that.
Vallis is lucky he didn't get more seriously hurt. Tell our team to get up right away unless hurt, Max got up right away. Lost a couple teeth.
Not asking for suspension from WCHA, but they will do their due diligence.
Mostly frustrated, could see it escalating. LSSU player elbowing, same guy got a boarding call Friday.
Credit to our players, that early Saturday hit could've gotten bad, but our players showed restraint. Get through the game.
Upset, a coach is responsible for your team.
Damon/Mel are fine. Have not talked, but will. He recruited a lot of these guys. Want to be a physical team, but fine line.
Bottom line glad Max is OK. Max did not turn into this hit. No need for a hit like that.

Within 2 points of McNaughton - wanted to be in a position to get that trophy
Really like how Jamie is playing, team coming together, good D - GA over last month really good
Depth up front, Vallis, Sturos coming on strong

How much time do you spend on blocking shots?
Talk about it, show it on video during scouting. We're doing a much better job.
Don't know that we need a break, but will use it to get rest/healed and add some things for Bemidji.

Chance to see Eastern teams in Houghton or play there?
Set for a few years. Mel/Bennett from Union have talked. Looking at non-conference want good games, up/down the sheet, exciting.
At Michigan there was a team they would not schedule non-conference, not fun for players or fans.
We travel a lot, so have to be careful and find right fit.

Do you regret not finding another non-conference series for PWR purposes?
No. Have to win those games, possibly having to go on the road again, make it hard.
Mel's 2nd year first 7 of 8 were on road. Resulted in some losses, don't help PWR.
Like our team, think we can beat anyone.
Have talked to St. Cloud, UMD, Omaha, some teams that would at least come back to Houghton.

It's great to see Mel talking to UMD, SCSU, UNO to try and get home and home NC series.
As for everything else, I'm attempting to create an RPI calculator to determine how tweaks would affect things, like playing against WMU this year, etc.

Heard from a well connected UMD fan and it sounds like UMD and MTU next year is going to happen. Not official yet but encouraging. Hopefully it will fall on a work weekend I already have off.

What I saw after the game was that Damon clenched Mel's hand and Mel pushed to get free.

This is the same thing I saw. I guess they had to be separated in the press box after the game.

From the LSSU side of things, some of Damon's thoughts were posted on the LSSU page.

Had the refs just called the checking from behind late in 2nd correctly, I don't think things would have gotten out of hand. To miss the check from behind on LSSU, and call a hooking penalty on Tech seconds later started to send things out of control.

He jostled him too. Kind of like Lucic shaking hands with
Habs players. I used to like the guy. Not much anymore.
I'd read up on the LSSU thread before you jump to much...it was just a very heated game and more than likely, despite what Mel said, his players weren't angels either.
It's no excuse for what happen to Vallis or the other bad events in the game, but emotions get going and lots happens, especially if players feel cheated by refs not calling things even in their eyes.

I asked about the DQ's/etc in both threads, for this reason, and got pretty much the same story for them, so IMO, I didn't find any homer-ism on the game. In short, yes, read the LSSU thread also.

I was at the game- sitting 5 feet from the Lake State bench. The game was physical, and there were some cheap shots. That's what happens. The only thing I took exception to was the handshake. If Whitten wants to play tough-guy with our coaches I'd rather see him go with one of our assistants, or one of our NHL All-Star Game MVPs.

No big deal, it's just a part of hockey. If is was a big deal, Damon would of gotten suspended or fined by the WCHA league office. It's not like he punched Mel or threw sticks or equipment towards him or his players.

Chris Dilks is reporting we have a new recruit. Anyone know anything about him?

Another issue. Regarding Brad Schlossmanns post. http://undhockey.areavoices.com/?p=102204

What has happened to the Mining gazette coverage of the Huskies?. We used to have a beat writer. Now not so much. If he's there, he's disgusting himself very well. I think they are missing the boat in not doing more Tech Hockey coverage. Can't they at least have a weekly column?!
Personally, we are all in this boat together. The WCHA deserves more coverage than it gets.

One last thing. I'm heading over to the 5 nations tournament tomorrow at compuware arena. . USA vs Finland at 7 pm for anyone in Detroit.

Jackson Cates, Forward for #3 Stillwater (same HS team as Mitch Reinke), 2nd in scoring behind his younger brother, was MVP and leading scorer of last year's team. Be interesting to see if they go for his brother too. I'm gonna try and go watch him play Thursday.

Daver Karnosky writes about MTU hockey for the DMG but it's behind a paywall, so no point in posting here...he's a good writer, wrote for the Lode and helped with Tech Hockey Guide before we took our break.

Glad you read it, but here's why I said what i said.
I can see Psu getting more than 500 but I don't think they win even one against michigan, OSU is no pushover, and Msu showed they can win every so often and they are at home.
I ran a scenario just for this weekend. Everything was the same except.... minnesota split with OSU and minnesota swept them. In this scenario, PSU and MSU split in both. in one Minnesota came out 14 and in the other 24. just that one change.
As far as Lowell, I think 4-2 is their best case scenario. in those four games vs bu/bc, I had them winning one.
Lowell hasn't been great lately. They did split with PC, but didn't deserve to win, and they tied NU and lost to UNH.

I understood your reasoning. I just disagree. :)
Respectfully, of course.
