We'll take the W. I thought it was interesting Wintjes was the backup.

Mel's postgame with Dirk:
Knew refs would even things out a little bit
5 things we have to do in 3rd with lead, stay on the ice is one, understand situation
Bad penalty by Cliff, lose him too, need him on ice
Took a couple bad penalties, we wont be able to take penalties like that in the future and get away with hit
Petan had good looks, more than last 5/6 games combined
Limited them to 14 shots, numerous scoring opps, didn't put them out of the game though
PP wasn't very good, have to get better at that
Like our start/ready to play, but have to continue to get better in some areas, game situations

It's a new rule this year/being made with greater emphasis. So to answer your questions I don't know.

When I've seen it called before — twice, I believe — it was not only for the fact that it was interference but for the overall violence of the hit.

How do you get 5 for interference?
I'm pretty sure this is how the rule book lays it out:
Player obstructs the other player = 2 Min minor
Player really obstructs the other player = 4 Min double minor
Player really obstructs the other player in a way that looks very bad and he falls in a heap = 5 Min major
Player really obstructs the other player in a way that looks super bad, he falls in a heap, you've gotten the last five penalty calls and the refs want to even things up for their earlier questionable major + game misconduct = 5 Min major plus game misconduct
Seriously, how did they come up with that penalty at the rules committee?
We have interference, but we need something to call when he really, really gets in the other player's way.
How about EPIC interference?
No, that's too hip and trendy. We need something that fans can understand.
Ok, how about "major interference"?

They need to stop with the penalties...
I agree that Tech needs to cut down on the dumb penalties, however you will never be able to stop the ref from making dumb calls just to "even things up". One of my pet peeves is seeing a 5-min major called and 30 seconds later the team on the power play gets whistled for some ticky-tack call. Something that didn't get whistled the other 59 minutes of the game.
I also dislike when the refs just flip a switch and suddenly one team can do no right and the other can do no wrong. Penalties called by the back ref when the one standing 10 feet looking right at the plays calls nothing.
UAF takes five penalties for 21 minutes in the first half of the game and then suddenly in the second half of the game they can do no wrong and what a shocker, Tech magically ends up with the exact same number of penalties and minutes in the second half of the game... Give me a break. Why not umpire baseball and just decide not to call any strikes after the top of the 5th inning.

Glad we're not the only ones who thought officiating last night stunk.

Khaira made his NHL debut tonight for Edmonton vs. Pittsburgh.

Would have been a Senior this year. Came in same time as Copley and Phillips. Difficult to say the team would have been better the last season and this season with him. Could have used the extra big body two seasons ago when we had all the injuries without the depth we've had last season and this season.

In honor of our sweep at UAF, this post will be done in the style of their announcer who was generally very good, but tends to get quite excited at times. Their camera operators, not so much. They tended to lag a few feet behind the play and did a good job showing where the puck previously was located on the ice.

I thought Tech had a solid weekend. Clearly UAF is not the team they were last season and based on what I saw, they don't look to be a top half team. So good for Tech to get the four pts
OHHHH, SHOT ON NET, BIG SAVE
and beat the teams they should beat. In spite of being in first place, Tech need to keep playing like they are four points down in the conference because with MSU having two games in hand
TYLER MORLEY IN THE SLOT WITH A BACKHANDER! OH MY!! PHILLIPS SAVES A GOAL!
because once the number of games played evens out, Tech could find themselves in the middle of the WCHA.

It was nice to see the power play get a couple goals as well. I feel like Tech
SHOT FROM THE POINT, OHHH!! TIPPED JUST WIDE
should have an advantage on big ice as I view them as a more highly skilled team now than they were in past seasons. In my view Tech seemed to set up a three man umbrella on the PP and then posted two players in front of the net. So as a result our PP goals were more individual efforts rather than great tic-tack-toe passing plays. Sweet redirection goal by Tyler in the Saturday game. Hopefully Tech can sweep them again
A CHANCE IN THE SLOT, ANOTHER WHACK AT IT, OH MY HOW DID THAT NOT GO IN???
when they come to Houghton later in the season. In the off-season this was a series I was fearing, but clearly UAF has taken a step back from last season. We should be able to put together another four wins the next two weeks and enter the GLI with good momentum.
JENKS WITH A HUGE SAVE!!!! OHHH MY!

How do you get 5 for interference?

It was brought up last season, and it falls under the "hitting an unsuspecting/vulnerable player" area.
Basically, if you absolutely blow a guy up before he touches the puck or well after he releases it, the refs have the discretion to assess a 5.

Next weekend they host UAA, so that needs to be another four points. Then they pay a visit to the Soo, where I worry Deifel could steal a game.
