Re: #8 Merrimack / #12 Maine @ #7 UML -- Feb 10/11
Without question, I think that had to be the greatest regular-season game in the history of the Tsongas Arena. Tonight was the first battle in a three-part war. For the first 40:00 minutes, the Carr vs. Cannata fight was legendary and while Cannata was beat twice tonight, by no means should that diminsh his performance. In fact, if it wasn't for him, it would have been a lot worse.
I can not make any comments on the reviews tonight as it happened at the far end of the ice. There was no question the puck was tipped by a Merrimack player. Bunyan was signaling goal and Carr calmly look at him with the expression "Really". As far as the Lowell goal, again I did not know why the original ruling was made but the Lowell players had no doubt that it was a legit goal.
While there were oodles of chances on both sides of the coin, the key play of the game was Stollery clearly running Holmstrom into the boards with the number 12 looking Stollery right in the eyes. As a senior leader and one of the best defensemen in Hockey East, the momentary lapse of judgement cost his team the game. Lowell wins a faceoff a quick pass and Arnold beat Cannata who had no chance on the second goal and was the backbreaker. Stollery simply has to make a better decision than that.
Again, Lowell is getting fortunate at the end of games. Sooner or later, this new habit of taking penalties is going to bite them.
