It would be a lot more valuable to have Snowden come back, face trial, be convicted, and then at some future point have the conviction overturned and a precedent established essentially extending whistleblower protections to those who challenge the state security apparatus when it commits crimes against civil rights and civil liberties.
Snowden appears to be in no rush to trust the American legal system and I don't blame him. But if he wanted he has it in his power to sit in jail and loudly demonstrate that we are not what we pretend to be.
I hope he does, but know he won't.
