Re: 2nd Term Part VIII - The Thin Red Line

Wow, contrast that to up here where the Lt. Gov, a Republican, signed an emergency order allowing the Independent to choose his new running mate (granted, there was already precedence for it).

Apparently the Kansas SoS has allowed people to drop off the ballot for similar reasons before, but changed his mind this time. I wonder why....

I have no trouble with it. But those who pay the most will benefit the least from SS (nothing new there).

Next step is means-testing benefits. Turn it into an old age insurance policy that only pays off if you lost. If you won, congratulations.

The President will be on Meet the Press on Sunday in Chuck Todd's debut as host.

Softball game or lion's den?

Call went on to say that Democrats are trying to take the “Todd Akin approach” of tarring all Republicans with the same brush, using Klingenschmitt’s outrageous statements to attack the whole party. He said that the approach won’t work because “(v)oters are too sophisticated.”

To the contrary, I'd say most voters are pretty effing stupid.

Nah, they're just not that interested in politics. Life's full of difficult tasks and decisions and the vast majority of people manage to navigate them. So when it matters to them, they're smart. When they don't care, it shows. 40% of eligible voters don't vote. Of the rest, large numbers don't have basic civics knowledge. Of the maybe 25% of the full electorate who could pass a freshman poli sci test, very few want to deeply explore abstract concepts like freedom and society, or the limits and scope of law and collective will. So even though most people are very smart and enthusiastic about some aspect of life, few of them will be smart and enthusiastic about politics.

Put it this way. How many people post regularly to the Cafe? Now how many post regularly to the political threads?

Oh brother.

Anchorage just added a referendum on municipal employee collective bargaining to the state ballot. The gong show just got gong-ier.

Is it to permit the start of new bargaining or to ban existing bargaining going forward?

Limiting bargaining going forward. Also allows the city assembly to make binding labor decisions instead of going to arbitration/mediation.

Bill was passed, then repealed, then the repeal was vetoed by the governor, then they raised the money to put it on the ballot, then they spent the money on emergency staffing for the fire department.
