Right now the UK economy is slightly above Mississippi's. If the Scots bolt, then does the UK fall another notch?

I don't own a smart phone. :)

But I think BBC 1-5 are available on their website. It's a disheartening experience -- every terrible American TV show has an equivalent British programme. There's even a British "Jersey Shore" called Geordie Shore, about those loveable scamps on the Tyne.

This week in Republicanism:

In all, 19 Republicans voted to end the filibuster and allow a debate on the legislation, which is 19 more GOP votes than the Paycheck Fairness Act has ever received.

It came the same week that 25 Senate Republicans joined with the Democratic majority to advance a constitutional amendment on campaign finance.

The GOP minority isn’t supporting the underlying the bills; they’re trying to waste time on purpose. As Burgess Everett explained, “Senate Republicans have a new strategy: Vote to advance bills they oppose.”

The GOP broadly opposes both of these proposals – but they are voting to extend debate on them to chew up the remaining few days on the legislative calendar and prevent Democrats from holding even more campaign-themed votes on raising the minimum wage, reforming the student loan system and striking back at the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby decision.

This is pretty interesting. The internet abounds with all sorts of crackpot right-wing wet dream statements of principles, so we should have a left-wing one. :)

I actually think the preponderance of right wing crazy-talk has helped moved the Overton window far to the right over the last 30 years. The left tends to target compromises while the right just goes full throttle towards whatever cray-cray they are obsessed with that day. The evolution over time of reasoned discussion on one side and balls to the wall ideological insanity on the other has helped push what counts as "accepted discourse" so far into the reactionary heaven of the Sunday pundit shows.

Actually laying out liberal principles gives us a target to work towards. And oddly enough, it may not even be that difficult, once those principles are circulating in the wider public, to achieve some of them. Look at how much success the far right has had in achieving so many of its wildest dreams.

There’s some sort of unofficial birthday/Iron Dog-type/snowmachine party in Anchorage. A nice, mellow party, until the Palin’s show up. There’s beer, of course, and maybe other things. Which is all fine, but just about the time when some people might have had one too many, a Track Palin stumbles out of a stretch Hummer, and immediately spots an ex-boyfriend of Willow’s. Track isn’t happy with this guy, the story goes. There’s words, and more. The owner of the house gets involved, and he probably wished he hadn’t. At this point, he’s up against nearly the whole Palin tribe: Palin women screaming. Palin men thumping their chests. Word is that Bristol has a particularly strong right hook, which she employed repeatedly, and it’s something to hear when Sarah screams, “Don’t you know who I am!” And it was particularly wonderful when someone in the crowd screamed back, “This isn’t some ****ed Hillbilly reality show!” No, it’s what happens when the former First Family of Alaska comes knocking. As people were leaving in a cab, Track was seen on the street, shirtless, flipping people off, with Sarah right behind him, and Todd somewhere in the foreground, tending to his bloody nose.

Eh, maybe. I stopped guessing. People still ask me if I dye my hair and I'm a natural blonde. Some blonde hair just has that weird color shift depending on the angle and the lighting. But yeah, the ones with yellow hair ain't so good.
