A number of Senate Republicans said Tuesday there's no time to wait around for the House to coalesce around a plan of its own with the threat of default less than three days away.
A visibly frustrated Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said she had been hopeful that House Republicans had come up with a plan of their own after meeting with a group of them in the morning.
"But then I heard the Speaker withdrew his plan after his caucus with the House members," Collins said. "At this point, I think the Senate needs to lead. We need to send over a plan to try to get government open and avert the default."
This just in...
Republicans suck.
Pat Robertson Urges Republicans To 'Wave The White Flag'
Right-wing televangelist Pat Robertson said Tuesday that Republicans are being too extreme in risking default over Obamacare, Right Wing Watch reports:
"Republicans have got to wave the white flag and say, 'We fought a good fight and now it's over,'" Robertson said on his show "The 700 Club."
"They cannot shut the government down and then bring about a default," Robertson added, "We cannot do it."
Robertson advised Republicans to let Democrats keep the Affordable Care Act, and go to the electorate saying they tried their best to get rid of it. He said the effects of default would be too great.
"It would be devastating economically to every human being, and the Republicans just cannot get tarred with that," Robertson said.
Robertson is not alone in suggesting the shutdown and debt ceiling fray could harm Republicans. Conservative radio host Mike Huckabee on Monday called the shutdown a "stupid tactical blunder" for the GOP.
To the Tea Party passing the Senate Compromise is akin to passing a tax increase. Won't happen.
The thing is that the GOP doesn't need the tea-baggers to get this done, so it's on the ENTIRE GOP.
Especially the cowardly (or ideologue) Bone Man.
So, with two days remaining until the Oct. 17 deadline, the House’s plan … doesn’t exist.
And that leaves Boehner with an interesting decision to make.
He could throw up his arms, tell conservatives they had their shot, and accept the Senate deal immediately. Most House Republicans would be angry, but House Democrats are already on board, and if only one-tenth of the House GOP endorsed the policy, the crises would be over (at least until next year).
Alternatively, the Speaker could push his plan further to the right to make the unhinged Tea Party wing more likely to support it, while guaranteeing that the bill would fail in the Senate.
Boehner appears to prefer the latter, and there are multiple reports that contraception restrictions will be added to the House bill to help pick up far-right votes.
If House Republicans manage to stack the bill with enough conservative treats to make Tea Partiers happy, they’ll pass the proposal, send it to the Senate, and see it die immediately.
As chaos overwhelms Washington, Speaker John Boehner can either make Tea Party Republicans happy or he can prevent U.S. defaulting on its debts.
He can't do both.
That was weird. I was watching C-SPAN2 waiting for the Senate Republicans to speak after their meeting and someone walked up to the podium, told the assembled media "this isn't happening" and CSPAN immediately cut to the Senate floor.
I've never understood conservatives obsession with sex. I mean, if none of them are getting any, what do they care about contraception?
When Pat Robertson is a voice of reason, something's wrong.
What isn't happening?
The senate Rs never spoke.
CNN just interviewed a Congressman close to Boehner and the House is apparently going to vote on the Senate plan tonight.
So, he's going to put it on the floor without Tea Party votes?
So, he's going to put it on the floor without Tea Party votes?
that is what it sounded like. He said boehner had reluctantly followed the ted cruz plan for two weeks and had decided to drop it. Finally.
