Re: 2nd Term, Part VI: Burnin' down the House

This is just a dumb talking point that all pundits use when it serves their purpose. There isn't a person in Congress or on their staff who reads most of, let alone all of, any bill.

Not to say that Congress shouldn't read the bills. They should. It's just that they never do.

They don't. Their staff's do. Their staff also writes the bills.

Re: 2nd Term, Part VI: Burnin' down the House

Ah, this isn't one of the strong points of your argument. Need I cite the famous Nancy Pelosi quote about finding out later what's in the bill? Even its strongest proponents stay away from this discussion.

As opposed to the Patriot Act, which was read and studied thoroughly before being passed by Congress.

They don't. Their staff's do. Their staff also writes the bills.
That's cost-effective right there!

Shinseki warns shutdown is harming veterans

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki is warning that the government shutdown has harmed efforts to reduce the disability claims backlog, and threatens compensation payments for millions of veterans. “The momentum achieved over the past six months has now stalled with the government shutdown,” Shinseki said in prepared testimony he is scheduled to deliver Wednesday before the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. A copy of his testimony was obtained by The Washington Post.

Shinseki will testify that if the shutdown continues into late October, compensation payments to more than 3.8 million veterans will not be made in November. “These include thousands of veterans who have the most severe disabilities,” he said in his advance testimony.

Pension payments will also stop for almost 315,000 low-income veterans, Shinseki said.

With Department of Veterans Affairs regional offices around the country closing to the public, more than 7,000 VA employees placed on furlough and the size of the disability claims backlog creeping upward, the House committee is seeking more details about the impact of the government shutdown on veterans.

Yes, I know that the Washington Post is an American version of Pravda and is run by Kenyan Muslin terrorists but that doesn't make the statements by Shinseki any less true.

Re: 2nd Term, Part VI: Burnin' down the House

In 2012 we had a referendum on how the country should be governed.
It never ceases to amaze me how party faithful continually misinterpret disdain for the other party as a mandate for theirs.

And on October 3, House passed H.J. Res 72 259-175 to ensure all that is funded and the Senate refused to take it up. Sounds like it's Mr. Reid on that one.

No, the shutdown is completely on the GOP in the house. They had no precedent or authority to do what they did and passing piecemeal funding doesn't absolve them of their responsibility for ALL of the collateral damage that's being done.

They don't get to re-debate a LAW by shutting things down and then funding the things that make them look bad.

Why? There have been 29 previous government shutdowns. In every other case they were negotiated. Obama and Reid have refused to negotiate. The sacred cow ObamaCare has already been delayed or modified 19 times by the admin, why is it VERBOTEN!! to discuss another delay as part of this current negotiation? Other bills have been passed piecemeal to fund certain functions why not veteran's benefits? Why is all different now?

But it's a lot more true about a bill that reforms a complex segment of society like health care than most run-of-the-mill bills. Most bills aren't, what, 2000+ pages, and substantively amended up until the very last moment.

No need to worry, the lobbyists knew what was in there.

Like, say, the Patriot Act. But all that dealt with was privacy and free speech which aren't that important under the Constitution.

Originally passed by a Republican Congress and President, later renewed by a Democrat Congress and President. It's a crummy law and both parties hold ownership of it now.

What's different is that the House Republicans have planned this shutdown for months. Since March the Dems have been wanting to go to conference on the budget, and the Republicans refused. So you would now like to reward them for this? Ummm...no. 19 times Democrats have tried to go to conference to resolve the House and Senate budgets. 19 times the Republicans refused. Now the country is supposed to take them at their word, even after The Boner admitted he pitched a deal to Reid for a clean CR at current budget level, then reneged on it?

Re: 2nd Term, Part VI: Burnin' down the House

What would have been better is if they had actually worked on the stupid law in a bipartisan fashion and made it better. Instead we have this abortion of a law from the Democrats only and a bunch of whiners who can't defeat a President who accomplished near nill of his agenda from his first term.

Somebody better wake up the Republicans or they will be irrelevant in very short order.

This about sums it up perfectly.

As for the shutdown, I think Jon Stewart summed it up best when he said "The Giants lost to the Chiefs 31-7 on Sunday. Tom Coughlin doesn't then get to say 'You better give us 25 points by Midnight or we are shutting down the entire NFL!'" No matter how much conservatives think the law sucks (and believe me I am no fan of the ACA) it was passed by Congress, signed into law by the Executive and found constitutional by the Supreme Court. You even lost a subsequent Presidential Election where repealing said law was a major issue! That is it, game over!

Ultimately that is what this is all about. The Dems won and the GOP cant handle it. They tried everything and it failed but instead of being adults and just moving on to the other issues that matter, they want to blow the whole thing up! The GOP is like that psycho girlfriend who kills their ex because "If I cant have him no one can!!!". At this point they dont even care that it is ****ing people off in their party and their donors, they are all in! They are playing Russian Roulette and there is only two chambers lefts and one bullet...

Can't say I recall the details of how the Patriot Act was passed, though it's been re-upped a number of times since, with bipartisan support I believe (something you'll never see with Obamacare, which was passed with legislative sleight of hand to begin with). And if it helps, I have mixed feelings about the Patriot Act.

The Dems already negotiated. Boner agreed to the clean CR and clean Debt Ceiling in exchange for Ryan's budget number. The Repubs reneged to go after a law that was decided in the last Presidential election. Anyone who thinks otherwise isn't thinking clearly.
