2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

Re: 2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

Wonder what the good folks of West Virginia think about that?

That might be a relevant example if the state of Colorado were seceding from the United States and these six Colorado counties preferred to stay in the Union. However, this is not what is happening.

Holy crap, a statement from you that makes sense. :)

That said, if all six of these counties really do want to form their own state and a majority votes as such, I don't see what should legally stop them from going though all of the harangue, trials, tribulations, and approvals to do so. Of course, there will be plenty of petty partisanship that will prevent it from ever being ratified (2 more Republican senators and a Republican rep or two, Oh Noez!!111!!1!), which is a shame, as I was looking forward to calling it "Baja Nebraska". :D

How many people does it take to qualify as a state? I don't think six rural counties in Colorado are going to cut it.

How many people does it take to qualify as a state?

Is there a requirement? There are 550,000-600,000 people living in Wyoming according to the last census. If we let a state that big with a population smaller than Detroit (city proper) exist, I guess I don't see a problem.

This is all hypothetical of course, it's not like North Colorado is ever going to come to fruition. It's merely fun to speculate/joke about.

I think the Northwest Territories Act still specifies the process.

How many people live in DC?

Read up on it and there is no set population requirement. If I wanted to I could secede from the United States and ask the Congress and president to recognize the new nation of Pricelessistan. Realistically for all the offices that would need to be held I would need 12 people. Considering a Congressional district is supposed to be 500,000 I would say that is the minimum to get into the Union. Of course, Puerto Rico has been well over that number for a while.

Is a Congressional district really supposed to be 500,000? 313M / 435 districts (plus or minus DC) = 720K per district (ideally). There are 4 states (plus DC) with fewer people than that, plus states like Rhode Island (1.05M people, 2 Congressmen = 500K), which means that there are lot of districts out there with way more than 720K - Montana has only 45K fewer people than RI, but gets just one Rep, so they've broken the 1M per Rep barrier.

If an area with only 300K applied to be a state, why should they be denied?

The Northwest Ordinance (1787) said 60,000 was (is) enough to form a state.

As to the number of citizens represented by a Congressman, since Congress has capped the size of the House of Representatives at 435, the result is going to go up and up until Congress decides to increase its bloat. However, the House chamber looks pretty full and I don't think you can fit more fannies in the seats unless you went to open benches ala the House of Commons.

Because they lack the population to warrant a seat in Congress. As I recall PR has well over a million but are still not considered for statehood.

Realistically, in this political environment, it will take nothing less than another Missouri Compromise to get admission to the Union. And since "compromise" is a dirty word...

ETA: PR has 3.67M people and would become the 29th largest state in the Union (between Oklahoma and Connecticut) and have 5 members of the House.

Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) Cardboard Cutout Mocked At Tea Party Town Hall

The event closed with a question from a birther. "How does a person who does not have a birth certificate, who does not have a Social Security card, who does not have a selective service registration card, does not have a driver's license, become president of the United States?"

Simpson's impersonator ducked the question, responding: "You want me to keep bringing home the bacon, you gotta vote for Mike Simpson!"

"I'm not stupid!" replied the birther.

No one is more war-weary than me.
Me, me, me... it's all about me.

Hey dipstick, your hubris is showing.

OMG, like how long has that State Department spokeswoman been out of high school?

I've refrained from commenting on how we got here. And the dithering of this administration. God knows there's a place for schadenfreude, but not when the balloon is about to go up. This president is the personification of "dot with a circle around it." One good thing: I doubt we'll be hearing much from Rachel about "neocon cowboys" in the WH. I'm concerned with what we do going forward.

I'm no expert, but my take is that announcing in advance we're not trying to decapitate the regime (job one, IMO) is counter-intuitive. As is the use of the phrase "shot across the bow." I'd much prefer the phrase: "shot to the face." Let that slimy, murdering b*stard worry about Uncle Sam knocking on his door at "O dark thirty." Pulverize his air bases. Destroy his air force. Send a message to his generals that they may want to consider backing a different horse.

The Sun King has done everything but send Bashir an email detailing date and time of delivery.

By the way, the Sun front page hits the nail on the head.

An attack that makes Wolf Blitzer's nipples hard but does nothing to degrade Assad's capabilities, is worse than doing nothing, IMO. Krauthamer suggests a text message.
