2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

I'm sure that's entirely possible, even on both sides. For example, a certain senator vehemently opposing action in the Middle East, but once he gains control, decides that it's OK to be there. Sadly, I don't think I can name a representative in the House, Senate, or Executive Office that is not trying to make a move into the history books as being credited with specific actions, and instead is actually putting the country first and progressing for the sake of actual growth rather than progressing for the sake of progressing.

Ummm....hasn't Obama finished one war and is winding down the other one by 2014?

Okay.... You know, its a little early in the day to be drinking moonshine. In fact, I didn't even know they brewed that stuff in upstate NY!

I'm not currently in upstate NY, but there are a few places in upstate NY that do. ;)

Their negotiated exemptions from the "Cadilac plan" taxes weren't quite as sweet as they thought, I guess.

ETA: Yes, I recognize that this article and the labor unions' concerns are based upon the problems around the 30-hour requirement within the employer mandate.

If we're calling "waving placards and chanting in unison" a riot now, then I've got a riot to sell you in downtown Houghton MI.

I thought we were talking protests and not riots. Although, there was that one person in Milwaukee...

Not to mention, I grew up in the middle of nowhere, so I'm well aware of what excites that sort of folk. ;)

Did he say in his '08 campaign that he'd have us out of Iraq in 16 months?

Granted, if Bush had gotten a third term we'd still be there looking for WMD's...but the current prez campaigned on a particularly optimistic timetable which was amended pdq after taking office.
And no, that isn't a partisan crack...the last president to hit a timetable was Kennedy and look where that got him...they all fib about how quickly they can do something good and how long it will take for something bad to happen.

bonus fact: the US Embassy in Iraq has a $4 billion budget in 2013.

I try to avoid posting headlines from Fox.com. But I couldn't help myself for this one's awesomeness -
VIDEO: Could Al Qaeda hack into your car?

I don't recall that but I'll take your word for it if he did. Regardless, I can cut the guy some slack if after assuming office and talking to the military they asked for more time and he granted it. I believe US troops were out well before the end of his first term.

Likewise, I'd like to be out of Afghanistan right now except for some helpful drones to drop in on AQ as a housewarming gift as there's nothing left for US troops to accomplish. However I also realize the logistics and diplomatic wrangling takes a bit longer so end of 2014 it is.

Interesting point about a GWB 3rd term. Personally I think if either McCain or Romney had won in 2008 we'd still be in Iraq. To not be would be to admit a total failure in launching that war, something neither of those men were about to do to their party. While Romney inexplicably criticized Obama's decision to leave Iraq (?) during the 2012 campaign after the troops had already left there wasn't much to be done about that had he won. I'm real curious if something similar occurs in 2016 after we're out of Afghanistan.

Re: 2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

While its tempting to gloat at the complete and utter defeat of knuckledraggerism in regards to the Cordray nomination being approved and the GOP Senate being forced to back down in a humiliating retreat, I've noticed a subtle but more important trend.

Of late, we've seen a remarkable bit of cooperation in the Senate, even with its two leaders, Useless Harry Reid and Itch McConnell at the helm. A bipartisan budget (which the House refused to go to conference on), Immigration reform, a good attempt at gun control, a bipartisan effort on sexual assault in the military, etc. IMHO there's a reason for this, which is some in the GOP caucus are getting sick of Itch's nonsensical obstructionism just because he's mad the President won re-election. McCain in particular who can get a block to vote with him (generally Graham, Ayotte, Murkowski, and maybe Alexander) along with the two moderates left in the Senate (Collins & Kirk). A lot of whiny lefties were mad that Reid agreed to a face saving gesture by having new nominees to the NLRB. I'm in favor of that because at the end of the day people need to get along better. Its more than obvious that The Boner is impotent in the House. It would be nice to see Senate Republicans sideline McConnell and make their own deals when needed. Like 12 GOP Senators voted for Cordray. Had they done so two years ago things wouldn't have had to come to this.

The filibuster itself I have no problem with, but they should have to actually filibuster ala Rand Paul and Wendy Davis. The anonymous holds and paperwork filibusters are horse crap and should be eliminated. Especially the anonymous holds.

Here's the thing, though... if they're letting it go on the count of a filibuster threat, then why aren't they calling the supposed bluff and going forward to put them into a situation where they have to filibuster?

Great article. What ever happened to the Benghazi probe?

http://www.politico.com/story/2013/07/benghazi-investigation-libya-issa-94386.html?hp=l1

I'm going to publicly call out the USCHO conservatives on this one. You guys were all hot to trot on this, so what gives? Time to step up to the plate and explain your treasonous comments! :D

In particular, why won't Congressman Grand Theft Auto schedule the public testimony of Mullen and Pickering? He promised to after all, and doesn't the public have a right to know??? Is Issa covering up his own investigation?

Re: 2nd Term Part 5: Big Brotha

Imagine that

WASHINGTON -- The inspector general behind the critical report about the IRS' targeting of tea party groups acknowledged Thursday that the information in his report was not complete.

J. Russell George, the IRS inspector general, told the House Oversight Committee that only in the past few weeks has he become aware of documents showing that the IRS screened progressive groups in addition to conservative ones. George said he was "disturbed" by the fact that these documents were not provided to his team of investigators prior to the audit's release and that he was continuing to investigate the issue.

"I am concerned that there may be additional pieces of information that we don’t have," he said. "I'm very concerned about that sir."

George placed the blame on the IRS itself, which he said had not provided the full set of documents to him and his team to review. At one point, in fact, he questioned whether the tax agency withheld the information intentionally.

"We looked at the criteria they gave us, that only had tea party on it," said George. "The moment I was made aware of the fact that other groups were similarly spotlighted by the IRS, I dispensed my staff to review that."

George's comments further complicate the storyline surrounding the IRS' screening of groups applying for tax-exempt, 501(c)(4) status. What at first appeared to be a scandal squarely surrounding the tax agency's review of Tea Party groups has become a controversy about the report and its author. It also has become increasingly partisan, with Democrats left fuming about being misled and at least three Republicans on the committee apologizing to George for the criticism he endured.

Personally, I'm shocked. I mean, who could have anticipated this?

The next time a Republican tells you the latest "scandal" they're peddling is 'worse than Watergate' just say 'IRS' and walk away.
