Seems reasonable to me. I'd lean toward a check on both, but at least we'd be consistent doing it for both or neither. There are probably other things we could throw in here that we currently check or don't check for as long as we're trying to be consistent across the board.

Interestingly aside from some loony activists I don't think too many rank and file Dems mind ID's for voting either. Any law like this should go into effect in time for the election after the next one coming up, so as to give people time to adjust. We can argue the merits or lack thereof for the GOP all day, but on this issue I think they badly mishandled it. The public by and large agrees with their stance, but when you have people passing laws and then going to the press and saying how you just guaranteed a victory for your party's Presidential candidate the public smells a rat.

Actually, checks on voting but not on guns is perfectly Constitutional. Why? The only ways you are not allowed to deny or abridge the vote are based upon race, gender, ability to pay a tax, and age (assuming at least 18 years of age). However, the second amendment allows for absolutely ZERO infringement.

Al Gore lost that election because he had one of the stupidest campaign efforts I've ever seen. That coupled with a confusing ballot in one county that had some Gore voters choosing Pat Buchanan cost him the race, but it never should have come down to that frankly. The 2000 election is entirely on him and his team.

So since Gore ran a lousy campaign voter suppression in Florida was just fine and dandy. That's really great logic.

Class, since Trucker was evidently sleeping it off, I'll explain it again: It is difficult to establish "voter suppression" in an election where the allegedly suppressed voters turned out in massively greater numbers than just four years previous. It's a warm, comforting myth that Jeb Bush "stole" Florida for "W." The sort of thing Libstains use to scare little libstains when they're sitting around a campfire. The narrative is only missing credible evidence.

Please recall, the many media recounts in Florida all found Bush winning, with just one exception. If you count overvotes. People who voted for two presidential candidates. Well, generally speaking, even Libstains understand you only get one bite of the presidential apple. Not two.

Your whining about mythical "voter suppression" might be a bit more credible if you displayed any concern at all for Gore's extensive effort to disenfranchise GI's serving overseas.

Yeah, SCOTUS has said repeatedly that the 2nd Amendment allows for some regulation. Flaggy's just spewing his view of what he thinks the constitution says, not what it actually means in the real world.

The way I see it we have two choices. Background checks across the board or none. I'm ok with either. Decide and move on. In this regard I find the two issues linked. If we don't require Background checks for guns then we shouldn't require background checks for votes.



Feel free to disagree as I know you will. That's my stand and I'm sticking with it.

As if "background check" and "showing an ID" are synonymous.

IIRC the law got overturned or perhaps suspended? for the upcoming election because the DMV could not handle the volume of people needing ID in the weeks before the primaries. So while one lady may have had a good experience, it was clear that many others weren't because taking time off to haul over to the registry, only to deal with a several hours wait, and then having to come back again was getting ridiculous especially since I'm not aware of any widespread voter fraud in PA.

Plenty of time Opie. See, whenever I see efforts like this out of knucks', I bust out laughing. For every person the GOP ends up screwing out of a ballot, you have 2 people who would normally be indifferent to the election showing up just to kick a little @ ss on the party that targeted them. Sometime, someday, in a land far away Republicans will realize that forming a sustainable coalition of voters means appealing to more, not less, of them.

Think of it this way. Somebody's running for dog catcher in your town and since you don't own and aren't bothered by dogs, you decide to skip the election. Then the guy runs an ad saying that all old grumpy white Republican guys are dinosaurs who should be dragged out into the street and beaten.

As a old grumpy white Republican yourself, wouldn't that motivate you to now vote against the guy in an election you previously had no interest in? Same concept applies when the GOP tries to bone young people/minorities/women/the middle class/etc.

Had similar experience in Sarasota. They had appointments, which they honored. 20 minutes or less and I was out of there with a new Florida license, license plate and title. All created by one person at one station. Pretty impressive. Not a universal phenomenon, I think.
