22-23 USCHO Poll

Is OSU going to get dinged for 2 tight wins against an inferior team? Is UW going to get credit for completely totally destroying an inferior team? Is MN going to get dinged for not playing anyone yet?

I'm not complaining about the Gophers #2 ranking in this week's poll but I am confused how they got 2 first place votes with no games under their belt yet?

Granted it was exhibitions, but last week the Tunnelers defeated Manitoba 13-0 and this past weeked beat the pro team in town (the Whitecaps) 4-2. That may not be worth much to some but one thing is obvious watching the Tunnelers. Their forward depth is likely as good as anyone in the country (although, to be fair, the other top teams in the WCHA are right up their with them).

The Sinners are better than 5th but they only have themselves to blame for laying an egg the first game against the Nitty Kitties.

No no and no.
That's a half empty way of looking at things. Beating up on an overmatched Lindenwood, picked by Nicole to finish last in the CHA, did allow the Badgers to remain above teams like Quinnipiac and Colgate. No other team in the top 10 has already lost a game, so don't spin it like UW isn't getting any love in the poll.

The Felines and Toothpaste are legit. I've streamed a couple of Feline games and they will give the Toothpaste a run for the EZAC crown.

I agree.

Of course I feel that UMD should have lost a spot getting forced into OT again, this time by Kato, when previously it was St. Lawrence. They are a razor's edge from being 2 0 2 or worse. The points between UW and UMD did get shaved from 232-216 to 226-223. Of course there will be lots of opportunity for re-shuffling when OSU/UMD/UW and UM clash in a few weeks. In fact, in 2 weeks it's OSU v UMD. Then they play UW and UM.

Providence at 15 for beating Union and RPI is the head scratcher for me.

About the only thing that I've learned from the poll thus far is that they found 20 people to vote in it, so that's nice.

You TTT NMH all vote 5 times and roll dice for the rest of the votes. Or is it a dartboard this year?

I haven't been involved in the poll for a few years. If TTT is involved, he would go with something technology based, like a random number generator used to index into an array of teams.

Who actually votes in the USCHO poll for D1 women's hockey and how are those voters determined? I have always accepted the polls as reflecting a fairly broad vote from informed people, but maybe that is not the case?

I generally accept them as such but people have biases and different levels of information about different teams. There is also different levels of hype around certain programs which impacts perception. This is true outside of women’s hockey too. Makes for good forum fodder.

I absolutely believe polls matter to the programs. It can impact media coverage, recruiting, and maybe coach contracts? However the programs don’t control the polls and just need to focus on winning the next game.
