From time to time, someone who is a fan of only men's hockey will come into this forum and post something like, "Who care's about women's hockey? They couldn't beat a peewee team." Today's men's Gold Medal Game was entertaining for sure, but how do coaches instruct their youth teams who have watched that game-winning play?
"Okay, in your own zone, make a one-handed, lateral pass to a forward who is skating away from the puck while reaching back for it with one hand." Then, at the other end of the ice, "You little Nate McKinnons out there, if you're normally a forward and you find yourself defending, skate onto a loose puck like you've never seen one before." I know that the game gets faster, and the players are stronger and more skilled, but watching Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr playing on grainy picture tubes, it seemed like "strong on pucks" was still a thing.
