2026 Winter Olympics

I would bet there will be an interview with the Muzzinator at some point during tomorrow's gold medal game. As a Buckeye it's been awesome hearing Ohio State mentioned so much during the games over other college teams. When it comes to mentioning Wisconsin they seem more fixated on Edward's race than her school.
When Muzerall broke through, the media was incredibly favorable to her regarding the elements of her story that were so special - being a young mom, going from 2nd assistant to head coach at a big time school, and leading the team to national championships.

The media is now showing that same graciousness to Laila, which is so well deserved. The coverage is in depth, and imo not fixated on anything.

It’s not a competition, I don’t speak for Wisconsin but would bet they are fine with whatever mentions they are getting.

As far as Ohio, we are fortunate to have Muzerall and Edwards as ambassadors for the sport. Best wishes to both, as it relates to coverage they are on the same team.

Edwards is on the front page of the print edition of the nyt sports page today, the whole front page. The author came and spent time in Cleveland Heights for multiple days last week.

I would add… we are diehard fans of the sport, so we hear people’s stories told repeatedly. The casual fan is dropping in for 5 minutes and the presenter (whether it’s a journalist or stumping politician or salesperson) is going to deliver their message over and over. I think the coverage is great! Truly hope to see another boom in girls hockey. Covid robbed the US of the full benefit last Olympic gold.

How much do you think the multiple mentioning of Ohio State in the Olympics helps influence potential recruits?

Very little…. Despite claims to the contrary that crap box of a rink has more influence.

It's your opinion and I did ask to hear it but I'm pretty certain your wrong. Publicity and hype has long been know to influence recruiting in our football program and it applies to hockey as well!

Two entirely different animals.
Any publicity is good of course but a much much smaller influence.
Money is the greatest influencer nowadays.

I've heard them mention Mark Johnson, 8 national championships, all the UW players on Team USA and the Wisconsin program far more than Laila specifically. They tried to shoehorn her story in coz talking points and first African American and all that but you knew they were gonna do that. It's the Olympics and they're always looking for storylines and her's checks a lot of boxes from a human interest angle.

Both programs are getting plenty of pub and actually I feel like I've heard Wisconsin (for sure) and maybe even Minnesota mentioned more than tOSU.

Why anyone would choose to play in that HS rink is beyond me but maybe it is in fact money for some of them.

With eleven players from Wisconsin in the game tomorrow compared to (if I counted correctly) seven from Ohio State, shouldn't you be hoping such mentions have no particular effect?

I think it carries influence. But it seems the big ten teams plural get plenty of mention. I don’t think it’s a competition, but fwiw I think Wisconsin stands alone. Simms had a moment in the last ncaa championship, can she have one tomorrow? Knight breaks records with her next point, can ARD pull off a miracle? What about kk and the Hughes comparison? There’s the Laila story, what about Watts leading scoring for Canada? And KK leading scoring for USA? And on and on…

It’s really not a competition, but I don’t think Wisconsin is lacking for storylines. Even the equipment trainer is from Wisconsin? and the head coach?

Hopefully we are talking about BU tomorrow. :)

where I think OSU can highlight itself positively (in addition to all the existing positives) is if Muzzy can come across as being there to support her people and because “everyone watches women’s sports”, and not to steal a spotlight or look like she’s actively promoting OSU. TBD.

How about coaching your team the last week of the regular season at practice ??

One of the two equipment managers - Sis Paulsen - was the UW equipment manager and director of hockey operations for a half-dozen years. through 2024 (?), and is now the equipment manager for the Minnesota PWHL team. She played at UW from 1999 through 2003. She was also the equipment manager for the US at the 2022 Olympics, and for the World Championships in between.

One of the two team trainers - Stefanie Arndt - has been on the training staff at UW since 2013, and is the head trainer for the women's hockey team.

The head coach, John Wroblewski, is from Neenah WI, played at Notre Dame. I don't think he has any specific connection to UW.

(My father and his business partner had restaurants at one time or another in a half-dozen locations in the Green Bay-Appleton-Oshkosh area; the one in Neenah is still in business, being run by my brother David. The first thing I would ask Wroblewski would be if he's ever been, and the answer would undoubtedly be 'yes'.)

There is a non-zero chance that by Saturday evening, her team might have won the conference championship. Maybe she should be with her team preparing them for their games this weekend?

I really don't think the amount of mentions you get in the broadcasts means anything. Any young ladies who want to play college hockey know who the big teams are and know who they'd like to play for. Yes, the casual fan is being educated on who the big teams are in college hockey and yes, it's pretty cool to hear your school get mentioned a few times, but it's really meaningless.

yes again, there is a risk. It didn’t occur to me they have games this weekend. Should her team and staff be mature enough to prepare for Bemidji so she can watch her former players for 3 games in the Olympics? I think so. Would I have the guts to do what she’s doing? Not sure. Do people with more regular jobs than her take time off work at zany times to cram in “life”? Yes.

Muzerall might love girls and women’s hockey more than some of the other coaches too. It’s probably pretty special for her to be there, as a former player, this is the legacy that came from players of years past. And i guarantee her former players will appreciate it, and I think it’s good for women’s hockey to have people show up.

I thought it was cool when they said she was there, but grinding for Bemidji is also a choice.

Guaranteed there are little girls around the world who have not yet been indoctrinated on big ten sports who are learning about these schools and starting to dream. Agreed the teenagers already know the deal
