Mark Johnson has talked about the differences between coaching male players vs female players a number of times, and how he had to adjust. I never thought about who might be able to go the other way, but Muzerall - and I mean this as a compliment - might be able to do it.

Do we have an example of a male hockey coach who moved from coaching females to coaching males and demonstrated success with the transition? I'm sure there are examples in sports like basketball and volleyball, as they have a larger footprint. It seems that not that many even attempt it. After the 2003-04 season, Joel Johnson moved from being a UM assistant to Bethel, where he coached the men's team. Given he then came back to resume being a Gopher women's assistant, I don't think we can call that an outright success, no matter what he achieved at D-III men's. With the way the world works, I think someone like a younger Mark Johnson is going to have to show that success in women's coaching translates to success in men's hockey before a female coach will ever be given any consideration.

Jessica Campbell, the assistant coach of the Kraken, also coached for the Firebirds and in Germany. She had some stints for girls' clubs before transitioning to coaching men.

Kim Weiss coached for the Washington Pride girls program before transitioning to the NAHL Maryland Black Bears as associate head coach. She went on to be an assistant at Trinity College.

It's not as unheard of as you think.

What does it "mean" anything that Minnesota did this now, instead of waiting a week for the NCAA season to be fully ended? The portal in past years would already be open, but opens next Monday. This gives both Gopher players and players elsewhere an additional week to 'digest' the news and decide if it has any effect on their plans? And where might Frosty end up (assuming he wants to jump right back in to coaching)?

Eric Lang? Short stint as D3 Manhattanville Womens coach and then has had proven success at D1 Mens now.
 
Also - you don't want that rumor/talk/specualation around the week you are trying to win the Natty. Signing on the line, make it official and making that news announcement is much better than - we aren't going to talk about until after the championship - except everybody would be talking about it.
