2025-26 Penn State Nittany Lions

Hockey Valley double-header outside in Beaver Stadium on January 31: women vs. Robert Morris and the men vs. Michigan State. https://gopsusports.com/news/2025/0...se-hockey-valley-in-beaver-stadium-in-january
I've never been inside Beaver Stadium for anything, and never wanted to, but this one has me thinking...hmmmmmmm. The only bad part would be the crowd for the men's game - if they do the women's game first, maybe the men's crowd won't show up till later. I haven't seen an outdoor hockey game since I was a kid.

So the news about this yesterday in girls hockey world. Very exciting!

Awesome news on the winter classic type game for both programs. It's okay if the men's program takes the women's program for a ride. Just look at the WNBA now.

There are now two former assistant coaches that are now head coaches in the same conference, Brown and Coomey. Samsokevich, another former assistant coach, returns as an assistant with Coomey and finally Pardocki, a former player, is an assistant at RIT. That is quite a footprint for PSU in the AHA.

Nietzcke finally has used up all her eligibility at Lindenwood.

PSU starts right off with their kryptonite known as St Lawrence. Lum could pay off big dividends right from the get go.

Seemed like the team had its yearly exhibition with RIT on Saturday. Score was posted on Twitter (no highlights, just mention of the goal scorers), 7-3 win to start things off. Excited to be back in Pegula this week!

They posted a highlight video this morning on Instagram. No box score anywhere I could find, looks like the offense was slow to get started but finished off strong with 5 goals in the third.

Also looking forward to hockey in Pegula on Thursday!!

Why wasn't this even advertised? I didn't see any mention anywhere of a preseason game...nothing on the schedule, no mention on Twitter, nothing. Well, anyway, good to see the Italian freshman (Matilde Fantin) scored twice.

Well who scored and did more than one goalie play?
The short video on Instagram shows goals from Tessa Janecke (sort of), Katelyn Roberts, Leah Stecker, and Matilde Fantin, and shows Katie DeSa and Maddy Campbell in net, so I assume all three goalies took a turn. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DO6PpU8kSbH/?hl=en
(EDIT: Looking at their Twitter feed from Saturday during the game that nobody knew to follow, goals came from Tessa Janecke, Mya Vaslet, Leah Stecker, Grace Outwater, Shelby Shane, and two from Matilde Fantin)

I think Penn State really blew an opportunity by not saying a word leading up to this game, no coverage, no stats, no box score, no mention of it even coming up, nothing...less than a week before the start of the season, they could've used this to really drum up some excitement for Thursday's season opener, and nobody said a word about it. And now that the game has been played, no mention of it at all on the official women's hockey site. I don't get it, and I can't remember a season when they did that. True, it's an exhibition game, but somebody really dropped the ball on this one.

I guess I'll add that we're three days until the season opener and they still haven't even put this season's bio pics on the roster yet - they still have last year's pics up (unless all the freshmen look like a Penn State logo).

In years past, it was on the schedule. For some reason, this one was not on our or RIT's website. Maybe they wanted to keep it under wraps for some reason? Also, I'm pretty sure it was @rit and not @Pegula. Perhaps RIT didn't want the public in? It does feel weird; I agree with you that no photos and no promotions have been announced either. It seems to be the same for the men's team; there are no photos, and I don't think I have seen any promotions.

All in all, a big opportunity this week, and I'm sure there will be better promotion throughout the season. I plan to be at every home game, so if needed, I can do my best to give my non-expert thoughts :)

After one, Penn State is up 3-0 vs St. Lawrence on goals from Katelyn Roberts, Nicole Hall, and Grace Outwater. Shots on goal are 15 for Penn State and 4 for St. Lawrence, and each team took a penalty.

Penn State was on the gas from the start, and St.Lawrence really just looks outhustled so far. Freshman Matilde Fantin is on the top line with Tessa Janecke and Katelyn Roberts, and she looks good there.

No scoring in the second, so it's still 3-0. Shots on goal are 31-9 for Penn State, and they took two penalties to St. Lawrence's one. Penn State looks good, with just very minor things that can be chalked up to this being the season opener. Give these lines another game or two to get comfortable.

No scoring in the third, either, so Penn State takes the shutout win 3-0. Shots on goal ended at 38-15 for Penn State, and penalties ended at 5 for Penn State and 3 for St. Lawrence.

It was a good showing for a season opener, all kinds of hustle, and St. Lawrence really only had good chances when they were on the powerplay. Otherwise, Penn State pretty much controlled the play. It's hard to even know who is who among the freshmen yet, but Matilde Fantin looked good, and Danica Maynard showed a lot of grit...the rest will take some time to get familiar with.

No grades on a first game - it was great to see them on the ice again!

3-0. The USA camp for Desa has paid off. The new goalie coach can also get kudos. St. Lawrence lost Abby Hustler to graduation and it showed. Kampersal just loves to punish other teams with Vaslet on the third line. Lastly, Outwater is going to be a force.

Great opening game, excited for this afternoon. Agree, out of the freshmen, Fantin and Maynard looked good. Team seems to be playing fast already, which is expected with how many seniors they have, but the freshmen are filling in nicely. Excited to see how they grow as the season goes on. Obviously, St. Lawrence lost a lot of talent to graduation, but it would be a statement to start the year with a sweep.

Curious if the goalie who St. Lawrence had start most of the year last year is back today or if she's out hurt, looked fine on the bench from what I could tell from my seat last night.
