2024 Elections: One Last Chance for Democracy

Yep. Just posted in another thread but I'll ask again here, what the hell is wrong with Republicans? Trump ripped her military husband and it does not matter. I don't get it.

She thinks she has a future in the Republican Party. (she doesn't) For the foreseeable future that means you have to be on Trump's good side. Same reason everyone does. He is the only power structure left in that party he purged everyone else. In her brain a 1% chance (endorsing Trump) is better than a 0% chance. (fighting him) I give it 2 weeks before she starts talking about how they are good friends again and how she has nothing but respect and trust for him.

For her sake I hope he promised her Veep, because if she did this for a Secretary of State position or something similar she is a phucking moron. Her career dies if he loses she better go for gold.

The GOP backed themselves into a corner...they can't win with Trump but they can't survive without him. What's worse is, even if they get smoked in November they can't get rid of Trump or the MAGA wing any time soon. It will take at least 2 election cycles to even really begin to lurch back to some sort of sanity.

The problem is Biden can't afford for voters to sit at home. I don't like margins even if we know the polls are off.

It would take a rather significant amount of Muslims sitting home for it be a big problem...and come November I don't see that being the case. (same with African Americans)

I don't see any future for any Republican who kisses Trump's ring. They keep losing ground everywhere.

I saw an interesting but absurd (IMO) theory today.

Ohio is getting close to kicking Biden off the ballot for November. The theory is that it might be enough to tip the popular vote to trump. If that's the case, we might see a rush of red states passing the popular vote compact between the time of that decision in Ohio and November.

Now, I don't think the educated wing of the party would allow them to gamble on the popular vote. It's too much of a risk because now you're fighting turnout in every city across America, including in blue states like CA and NY where you can't suppress the black vote, and if we're all motivated enough, it turns out very badly for the GOP.

That would ignite a "Get out to vote" firestorm in every city of the US. The Under 30 crowd would take that to heart and make the R's pay in that scenario.

If voters were all motivated enough anyway, things would never be in favor of the fascists (AKA republicans). Therein lies the problem. 69.5 million people voted for Barack Obama in 2008. 65.8 million voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, despite the fact the country was 6% larger. Millions of likely democratic voters stayed home. And it wasn't as if they all voted for trump, because he only got 62 million votes If everyone in this country voted, there would never be a republican president, 40+ states would have Democratic governors, there would probably never be fewer than 56 D senators, and the house would be something like 350 D and 85 R.

But the relatively low turnout for most elections, coupled with the way we elect presidents and the complete lunacy of having an upper level of congress that is doled out with a complete disregard for population means we have about the least democratic system of government of any so-called "democracy" around. And people wonder why I want to burn the whole fu ck ing thing to the ground and start over from the heaping rubble. The real problem is 80% of America is too comfortable, stupid, or lazy to do anything about it. The other 20% is either too poor and literally unable to think about anything but where their next meal is coming from, or too in love with how things are progressing in our country (either due to fabulous wealth or because they are true fascists).

One huge problem with that theory is that probably all of those legislatures basically meet from sometime in January until April or May. I'd guess most of them are already out of session (or certainly will be by the time Ohio acts) and won't reconvene until after the election.

I want whatever that clown is smoking...even Alabama capitulated and is putting Biden on the ballot. Ohio will too because the Dems will just write Biden in anyways.

So which loonbat is tossing around that crappy plot from a mediocre political thriller?

The fascists would move as fast as they need during the putsch.

There are systemic reasons why under 30s don't vote, and the Battle of the Olds isn't going to be the time that changes.

But f-cking Obama needs to get off his saintly as-s and get into the fight for the black vote.

Voting for human (Women's) rights is what they vote for. That just happens to fall on Biden's side of the line here.

Kids who vote for human rights always vote. The kids who don't normally vote might vote for something like pot. It will be strictly "what's in it for me?"

I think this is closer to true than "kids don't vote".

not sure if that's always been the case, but at minimum the proportion has changed.

If there's one thing I remember from my 20s, it's that my level of political engagement and trying to be educated on the major issues was rare, especially among men. Despite some progress, which I attribute mainly to Dump being exceptionally awful, I think it still is.

Of course, going to a STEM school probably had an impact on my experience as well. STEM tends to attract a more apolitical or libertarian sort of individual, since people who prefer to work with machines are naturally less sociable and less likely to consider the concerns and feelings of other humans. That's why we have to force engineers to take ethics classes. ;-)

Good. Maybe I'm not the demographic. The only thing I've heard from him in the last couple years is that lame movie.

Legit got another one this morning! This is what happens when you donate to a half dozen liberal organizations! I get like 20 emails and texts a day from various pols and such.

Ya know according to a recent poll a ridiculously high percentage of people think unemployment is at a 50 year high? And that we are in a recession! And media types seem confused as to why. Gee could it be because all you do is interview people who think that way and broadcast it but never correct it?
