2024-25 PWHL season

Go Britta! Play your game. Once Murphy gets to the PWHL, all the heat will be on her. Imagine the outrage if the hit on KK in the semi's happened in the PWHL.

it just is what it is. Didn’t surprise me, but not used to watching a game like that. Experienced it once watching Islanders at Senators back in the day, a couple years removed from Yashin’s holdout and folks were still booing. I imagine as play is happening the players are so focused they don’t hear it. Murphy in the league is going to be wild. More WWE vibes, lol. It will be entertaining; hopefully no one is seriously hurt.

I wish Ottawa could score because they played so well. Clark seems dominant in terms of puck possession but needs an accomplice to help her bury the chances she creates. It’s unfortunate they don’t have a scoring superstar, watts left : - ( and I question if Mrazova can stay healthy.

In theory Serdachny should be filling the net, wonder why she’s struggled so much, didn’t even hear her name barely last night. Heard she’s on the 4th line?

I think if you are MacLeod and have a team full of players struggling to score, i you need to keep throwing Serdacny out there

It's which team do you cheer for perspective. I always go back to if your team's player goes hard to the net it's a good play but the other team's fans think you tried to run their goalie.

She was the same way at UW. Hard to imagine her and Nurse on the same team and no Natties to show for it.

Clark was on the 2018-19 championship team. So, she won one. Nurse, and Desbiens, however, never won one. (Also, Frost player Mellissa Channell never won one, on that 2016-17 team that "should have won".)

I forgot she was on that team, the team Pankowski willed to win it all.
(Was about to go through Pankowski's scoring stats in that March, and then remembered we're not on a Wisconsin thread. I wonder if she regrets not have been able to give the PWHL a try. I hope not.)

You had Blayre Turnbull on those teams as well. I never thought she was at quite the same level, but Tessa Bonhomme was predicting who gets predicted off each PWHL roster and she named Turnbull.

Turnbull graduated in 2015. The specific team we've been referring to is the 2016-17 team that lost to Clarkson (who they had beaten twice, at Clarkson, during the regular season). Nurse, Clark, Desbiens, Channell, and a bunch of good underclass - Pankowski, Roque, Wellhausen, Norby, Claudia Kepler, Sophia Shaver. But not Turnbull, she was already gone.

True. But she was a teammate of Nurse, Desbiens, and Channel, and on the list of Badgers who didn't win NCAAs, going back to Timothy's original point.

Anyone think Hilary Knight will go to seattle? Is she even eligible? I assume she’s under contract one more year so can’t remember if she’s eligible or not.

I would see Knight to Seattle a bit like Gretzky to LA, as far as building the sport. Truthfully and respectfully , there are better and more exciting players now, but she’s an icon of the game, would sell tickets initially, and can score goals with the right line mates.

Or does she gotta stay Boston until the end?

Which bright young stars would you like to see at the new franchisees or veteran ‘C’s to lead the way?

That was one exciting game at the Xcel Saturday. Triple overtime with both goalies playing as stonewalls. The Frost definitely looked like they wanted that win on their home ice. I can't wait to see the arena on Monday. 4:00 Central time start. Anyone else going there?

I just put 2 and 2 together and realized it's inevitable who the next coach of the Frost will be......

I think that we can rest assured that Boston will protect Knight during the Exclusive Signing Window and Expansion Draft! Yes, she would be eligible otherwise to be signed to an expansion team, as they can sign or draft anyone who is not on a team's "protected list" during those windows. Her contract goes through next season, but because of the expansion that contract itself wouldn't make her ineligible to sign with Seattle or Vancouver. (But players who are free agents this summer can't be on the protected lists.) Knight and Fillier were the two leading scorers this season, with Knight scoring more goals.

Currently I'm (vaguely) guessing that these teams will each protect these 3-4 players from their protection-eligible lists:
Boston - Knight, Keller, Frankel
Minnesota - Coyne Schofield, Heise, Hensley, Stecklein
Montreal - Ambrose, Desbiens, Poulin, Stacey
New York - Carpenter, Fillier, Schroeder, Shelton
Ottawa - Clark, Maschmeyer, Philips
Toronto - Campbell, Turnbull, Watts
For Minnesota, Montreal, and New York, I put 4 players, but technically the teams can protect only 3 to start. Yet as soon as 2 players from the team's protection-eligible list are selected by other teams in the exclusive signing window or expansion draft, they get to protect another player. So, as others mentioned, it would be wild, but Montreal may not be able to protect Stacey, for example, if they want to make sure of keeping Ambrose, Desbiens, and Poulin. I'm not sure how that would play out and assume they would jump to protect whoever from their top 4 or 5 they hadn't put in their top 3, as soon as a couple players sign with other teams. Eldridge on NY and Jaques on MN are also players that, for example, their teams may well want to protect and would be eligible for it!
Some of the top players not appearing on the lists as eligible (so, contracts expiring, I guess?) include Miller on Toronto and Vanišová on Ottawa.

Would Ottawa really protect two goalies? It will be interesting to see how this plays out. No doubt some hard choices will have to made regarding the expansion draft.

Yeah, it looks like current thinking on The Hockey News is that Ottawa will probably protect Philips and not Maschmeyer.

I also left out Renata Fast, whom Toronto will probably protect.

Ok so Knight will stay in Boston, I get it, haha.
Was listening to her on the Good Game with Sarah Spain podcast and it sure sounds like that’s where she wants to be and badly wants to win a championship there in this iteration of pro league.

Great lists, appreciate your thoughts! I do wonder if some more young players will get on these lists. I think of Stecklein as old at 31 for example. Perhaps that’s old for an average defender, but not someone of her caliber. I recognize she’s currently in the conversation for playoff mvp. Will be fun to watch it play out.

2nd intermission of the PWHL Finals game 4, and Minnesota is up 1-0. The announcers are going to be talking to Mark Johnson in the break "to break it all down."
