Takeaways from the afternoon:
-#6/#5 Plattsburgh got a nice season-opening win over #14 Norwich. Didn't get eyes on this one, but I'll leave it to the Plattsburgh posters to leave their thoughts.
-#15 St. Mary's gets upset by Concordia-WI after crushing them yesterday. A SMU student manager on yesterday's broadcast was bragging about not a whole lot of film will be watched after this dominating performance, and it appears the Cardinals got a little cocky. Great ranked win for Concordia.
-Aurora and Bethel tie 2-2, despite the Royals controlling the game by a wide margin.
1) Plattsburgh controlled most of play and played great defense. The entire blue line unit was really impressive, sophomore Forsyth showed that her improved play during exhibition was not a fluke. The freshmen forwards on the whole were really impressive including an all freshmen third line that had good chemistry and were on ice for the first goal of the season. Some areas of improvement: the 2nd powerplay unit looked very discombobulated and it was that which led up to Norwich's goal after the penalty expired. Though a large amount of credit should go to the Cadet pk. I also thought they looked to be skating with heavy legs during the 3rd.
2) I heard the first period of yesterday's SMU vs CUW game and the announcer and graduated goalie calling it were insufferable. Very happy to hear this result.
3) Is Bethel decent now or is Aurora bad without the Matsons? Though they may still be adjusting to the new coach too

Aurora was a very average team with the Matson's, finishing a clear 3rd in a very weak conference besides the top two. Bethel went on a good run at the end of last year knocking off Hamline and almost Gustavus losing in OT. Bethel relies on their defense and goaltending, very challenged on the offensive end. I didn't watch this series, but I would have expected this outcome based on what I seen last year. Short answer to your question, a little of both.
Endicott traveled to Southern Maine Saturday afternoon for their season opener. The Gulls controlled play for most of the game against a physically strong and fast Huskie team that had beaten UNE 3-1 the previous afternoon. SOG were 36-14 in favor of the Gulls who got goals from sophomore transfer Lilly Corso and senior Sam Fantasia (ENG). Junior Casey Moritz stopped all 14 for the shutout. Endicott opens up conference play with a home and home against Suffolk starting Friday at 5:00PM at Raymond J. Borque Arena in Beverly, MA.
Have to hand it to Cortland in their 3rd straight win over Plattsburgh in their 2-0 shutout this afternoon.
It can admittedly be argued that 2024 Plattsburgh not being as good as their 2009-2019 teams or even the 2020 - 2022 squads. But that doesn't give enough credit to Rick Filighera and the Cortland Athletic Dept for committing to improving the program and the ladies in that locker room buying in and winning. Cortland used to be a doormat barely above Buff State and now they are up there among the top teams in the East region.
I posted a few dumb things when I was new to this forum 10-12 years ago but one thing I got right was when I said that if Cortland put resources behind their WHKY program it could be as regionally/nationally competitive as the other Red Dragon programs are in sports like Football, Baseball, Softball, LAX, etc.

I watched this one in its entirety. Cortland controlled almost the entirety of this one. They looked extremely strong, and I think considerably outplayed Plattsburgh, which is still just jarring to see. Cortland might be a Frozen Four favorite at this rate.

Their men’s team is also making a lot of noise lately. The only sport Cortland never took seriously and thus was naturally useless has now completely turned the tables.

I still remember being in the press box when the Cortland men beat us on home ice in like 2011 or 2012 and they celebrated like they were about to hoist Lord Stanley's cup. One of the guys doing video for the Cortland team immediately whipped out his phone and called someone shouting "we did it! we did it!"

Other notable results from yesterday:
-River Falls fails to win a hockey game since March 11, 2023 at the eventual national champ, Gustavus in the NCAA quarterfinal. Augsburg held a 3-2 lead going into the 3rd period tonight and were outplaying the Falcons in their own barn. Then, the Falcons dominated the 3rd to score 2 straight goals. But the Auggies, after not doing a lot in the 3rd period, tied the game with the goalie pulled with 12 seconds remaining. Both teams had chances in OT, but neither could break the ice. Amazing performance for coach Biz Bauer in her first game as a head coach. Augsburg is legit, and got goals from 2 D-1 transfers.
Horrific news in this one, though. In my opinion, the best player in the country exited the game in OT for River Falls. Defender Makenna Aure pulled off an insane spin move, sending an Auggie flying by her, and as she turned up ice, lost an edge while getting stick checked, and was in horrific pain. Looked like some sort of non-contact knee problem. She was helped off the ice, with no weight on one of her legs. If Aure is out long-term, River Falls just became a lot more beatable.
-Elmira held off Norwich 3-1 after an empty-net goal. Tough starting schedule for the Cadets, but very weird to see Norwich 0-2. We'll see if Norwich can even up the series today.

I hope Aure isn't as badly hurt as it sounds, she is a great player and it sucks for any player to lose their season like that.
The only miniscule bright spot if it is a season ender is that it's early enough in the season I believe she can get this year of eligibility back if the rules have remained as I recall them. Though that's probably little comfort right now

MaKenna Aure was +2 in yesterday's win for UWRF over CSS so if there are any lingering injuries they aren't severe enough for her not to be dressed and skating.
In other games:
Adrian mollywopped Marian 15-1 yesterday. They tied the NCAA record of 7 PPGs in a single game along the way. Courtney Ben and Callie Wollschlager each had a hat trick and 2 assists for 5 points.
Marian's lone goal was a shorthanded goal which is baffling given the context of this game.
Norwich got their first win with a 3-0 shutout of Elmira.
Canton is now on a 3 game skid following their shock OT win over Adrian in their opener. They've sinced dropped the Adrian rematch, Oswego and now yesterday's loss to Buff State which is 2-1-1 following a split with Neumann and a tie with Potsdam heading into yesterday's game.
Eau Claire erased a 2-0 deficit against St. Olaf and won 3-2. They scored an even strength goal, a shorthanded goal and a power play goal. They only needed an ENG for the cycle. The NCAA site has this game as the lowest attended of yesterday's matchups with 47 attendees (Norwich/Elmira led with 324).

A lot of close games this past weekend.
In the SUNYAC, Cortland split the weekend with a loss to Canton and a win over Potsdam. Plattsburgh beat Potsdam on Friday and then a tie to Oswego following a collapse where the Cards gave up a 2-0 lead with ~ 4:30 left in the third. Morrisville also split the weekend, losing to Oswego on Friday and beating Canton on Saturday.

I watched both Middlebury at Hamilton games. Midd is really good as they hustle and execute their systems on offense and defense. It was a clinic watching them possess the puck, run breakouts, set dump plays, and while they only had a couple chances on the PP, I would not want to go to the box against them. Mandigo wins for a reason: they are well-drilled.
Hamilton also played very hard and the games were very close, with Hamilton actually out-shooting Midd both games. It felt like Ham chased Midd on Friday, but Saturday was more even.
