2024-2025 Season - Providence College

Friars definitely need to figure out winning in Agganis. I think they have proved they can play with BU. Lot's at stake these last 2 games from a positioning view for HE and NCAA tourneys. They can finish anywhere from 4th to 7th in HE I believe. Would take 2 BU losses and 2 PC wins to get to 3rd. Vermont could help the Friars as they play UCONN tonight and BU Saturday at home.

Cats would be happy to help. BU certainly hasn't helped UVM with recent losses to Merrimack and Northeastern. There are a lot of ways, though, that the BU-UVM game could become meaningless for one or both sides.

I certainly agree about Thursday, a shock to the system. Tonight’s lineup was also surprising as far as starting goalie, but then Borgeil stood up with composure and class to his great credit. Terrific defensive play, especially by Richard as 73 mentioned earlier, and coming back so quickly after the tying goal by Northeastern in the 3rd was fantastic. 21 wins in the regular season is impressive, especially since so many of those W’s were away. Can’t wait for the game against UConn next Friday, go Friars!

Phillip still not healthy going into last night, they said Thursday it was more than likely Borgeil would get both games to finish the season. Need a good Phillip on Friday. UCONN is playing well down the stretch.

Hey they scored a PP goal last night, of course they also gave up a PP goal to a team worse then them on the PP.

What's the story here?

Having trouble with the format for copying and pasting data from Excel to this site. Here are some stats for the regular season (just typed in).

Home:
Wins 9
Losses 5
Ties 3
Total 17 61.8%
Away:
Wins 12
Losses 4
Ties 2
Total 18 72.2%
Total:
Wins 21
Losses 9
Ties 5
Total 35 67.1%

Non-Conference:
(includes NU game in Ledyard Tournament)
Wins 10
Losses 1 (Lost 1st game vs North Dakota)
Total 11 90.9%

Just listened to the Nate Leaman radio show from yesterday available now from the PC Hockey X (twitter) site. He said that both goalies were sick for the BU loss on 3/6, but they are both healthy now. Sounds like the whole team is in good health this week so hopefully that will be the case on Friday. He said they will skate at UCONN tomorrow and anticipates a typical fast paced Hockey East game. Hope our favorite team wins!

I like our chances, healthy. It's been a while

It was a very good game except for the final score. The first shorthanded goal by Richard on a tic tac toe collaboration with Gamache was fantastic. I knew 1 goal wasn't going to be enough, but PC just could not capitalize on their several grade A chances, before and after UConn finally broke through. That first UConn goal evidently deflected off of Machu making it impossible to make that save. Hockey god breaks like that frequently turn games one way or the other. Their second goal at the beginning of the third was a beauty and confirmed why coach Leaman said they had to be careful with Muldowney.

Now we wait to find out who and where we will be playing in the NCAA tournament. Looks like it will be a second or third seed someplace. Glad that last night wasn't the final game for the seniors and grad students, hopefully that won't happen for a few more games.

The lowest they could fall in the Pairwise now is to 13, as Michigan was eliminated in their conference tournament. Still got Ohio State and Penn State playing each other, so one could get past Providence. ECAC likely to be a one bid league whether it's Quinnipiac or a different conference tourney winner. Denver lost to Colorado College last night dropping them a bit in PW. But the one that has my attention today will be UMass and BU. I expect that to be a battle. Has more implications Pairwise of UMass moving past Providence. I watched the second Maine-UMass game last weekend and that was some heavy hockey, loved it.

Have you seen the CHN pairwise probability matrix? Realize a day of games has been played since you wrote this. Yesterday after running their simulations lowest PC could go was 10th

Now with just 19 teams still alive and I believe less than the 20,000 simulations PC is locked into either 8th or 9th. The team to watch out for is Denver. Ohio State with just 1 more game can’t climb. Denver has 3 possible games left beginning today with Colorado College

It looks like an 8 or 9 pairwise finish is likely. Several BC posters suggest placement in Manchester with them as the #1 seed. That would be good for more PC fans compared to all the other regional sites. It also provides for the same non BC game 1 matchup regardless of whether we are a 2 or 3 seed. Selection Sunday next week, looking forward to it.

Right, I posted after Friday's games so anything later Saturday could have (and clearly did) change that.

Using the USCHO pairwise predictor tool it looks like whether Providence finishes 8th or 9th in the pairwise depends on whether Denver wins tomorrow night vs Western Michigan. If they win I it looks like PC finishes 9th and if they lose PC finishes 8th.

For the NCAA regionals an 8th place finish gets us a #2 seed and a 9th gets us a #3 seed. Since the regional round one will start with the #2 seed playing the #3 seed it seems these outcomes make no difference unless whether you finish 8th or 9th impacts which region you are assigned to and therefore who your opponent is.

In any case, I think PC can beat any of the teams in the field so let the games begin!

I want to see O'Reilly back in the lineup, size and experience I think needed in these games. Maybe even Gendron as well. I don't feel they will be intimidated by Denver but definitely need to get off to a good start and stay out of the freaking penalty box. I have no hope for the PP, what can possibly change in two weeks from the disaster it has been this year.

Who is going up to Manchester? Unless I am missing something, I don't see them grouping tickets by schools so fans from the schools can sit in same sections (other than the band and limited student seats). Appears lots of tickets were sold early on too before knowing teams that were going to be there, although I assume BC fans knew awhile ago they would be in Manchester as a No.1 seed.

Early in the season O'Reilly was a solid contributor and nicely offset our loss of Bennett Schimek via the portal to ASU, (where O'Reilly came to PC from). Then it looked more or less like a wash. At some point though he seemingly ran into a wall. Last I looked Schimek ended the season with 37 points at ASU, while O'Reilly only has 9 at PC. Don't know if he was injured, got sick, had academic issues, or what happened but he stopped being a regular in the lineup and was not really a factor. So while size and experience is a plus, he would need to be willing and able. I would use players that have a positive mental outlook, care a lot about how they are leaving the program, and/or are playing better and peaking now.

PC can compete with any team in Div 1, (look at the 10W vs 1L non-conference record in the regular season - maybe best in the country), so I am happy to leave it to the Coach to determine who to play based on all the complex factors that need to be considered.

Looked at the SNHU arena, looks pretty nice with a hockey capacity of 10K so close to the AMP. D1 hockey is a great spectator sport, with speed and skill, (plus a lack of fisticuffs), so even better than the NHL in my opinion. Hope we all have fun and that a lot of the crowd is rooting for us.

I like Providence's matchup with Denver. It'll be good offense against good defense. I was surprised to find Denver's strength of schedule in the 20s while Providence in the top 10 (not surprising considering the success of the other 5 that got into the tournament). A less dominant year for the NCHC, getting just two teams into the tournament but two really tough teams. If Levens and Connelly in particular can stay out of the penalty box I could see this game tilting in Providence's favor, but whatever the result I'm expecting a 3-2, 4-3 type final score. With Providence having greater success in road games, it feels like they play their style better on the larger size rink.

A very good season in the books. Could bode well for 2025-26, (depending on whether we are helped or hurt by the portal). I am also concerned about the crazy deterioration in US relations with Canada, (who could have imagined that would happen), and the impact of NIL on college athletics. I personally liked the world where amateur athletes were playing for their school and team and appreciated the value of their education and scholarship opportunities.

In prior seasons my posts were almost always driven by Zlax who never had anything good to say and an irrational prejudice against the coach. This year was very different and the absence of his posts was a surprising positive development.

I hope you all have a good offseason, the college hockey season is very long so it is difficult to break the habit of following it. Next task for me is canceling my ESPN+ subscription until October!

Thanks to all the readers and posters on this thread. All the best PC fans!
