2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

I would guess janecke/gough, then vaslet/machado/bedier, then brooks/alva, then connoly/byrne. roberts, christian, and retrum will be be split between the remaining lines. I also think Stecker will play D. She did back when she played for Philly or she will play F on Janecke’s line (she did last year a few times). Butze, macheacern, lobdell, Garcia, helgenmuller, stecker make up the D. Stecker and Johnson could switch though. Just my thoughts

I am counting 18 skaters and 3 goalies. This is PSU''s smallest roster in awhile. Lots of playing time for the girls usually means happy girls. I'm interested to see if happy girls translate into wins. Bartowski had some good analysis. Stecker last year looked like she possibly could take a leap this year. Other sophomores are also possibly in that position with the excellent year round physical training PSU has.

I definitely like the Gough Janecke combo, but I also think Gough could carry a line. It will be interesting to see what the coaching staff comes up with.

In two more days (two days!), #11 Penn State travels to #5 Northeastern for a weekend series to open things up for 2023-24. As with every season, these first few non-conference matchups aren't really going to be an indicator of much, as I'm sure teams will be trying certain lines and adjusting players and plays after they've seen who and what is working best and what needs adjusting. Still, it will be fun to get a look at the new grad transfers and freshmen, and just get back into being a totally biased blue and white fan.

I'm really curious to see what the two grad student transfer defenders (#11 Alva Johnsson from Sweden and #21 Maggie MacEachern from Colgate) bring to the team, because I think losing Rene Gangarosa, Izzie Heminger, and Mallory Uihlein left a big hole to plug. The only other Swede defender to play at Penn State was Jessica Adolfsson, and I liked her game, so we'll see if Johnsson plays the same way. I don't know anything about Colgate transfer Maggie MacEachern, so we'll see how she gets after it in her final season.

Both games are streaming on ESPN+, and a monthly subscription is only $9.99, so that's a pretty good deal for a month of whatever ESPN+ is streaming, and they have replays of their schedule, too. Here are the streaming links for this weekend (man, it feels good to say that):

Lots of losses on defense and offense will allow others to have the chance to step up. Bothun returns which is a big plus. Northeastern will be a nice barometer. They lost the two Europeans, the Vermont transfer and the Providence transfer to graduation also.

Yes, Northeastern lost a ton of offensive talent for sure.

It will be interesting to see if DeSa gets some time in net this season.

After one it's Northeastern up 1-0. Northeastern leads the shots on goal 9-5. Penn State took 3 penalties to 1 for Northeastern. Neither team looks spectacular, as expected for a first game of the season, so nothing really scary going on. Penn State needs to work on their passing a bit, as there were quite a few icing calls, and obviously they need to stay out of the box. Overall, though, nothing really jumps out about the game so far, from either team.

Madison Campbell, a '25 (from high school) commit to Penn St playing for Durham West Jr. Lightning, shut out the Gophers in the first period of their scrimmage.

After two it's still Northeastern up 1-0. Northeastern took 2 penalties and Penn State took 1. Penn State leads the shots on goal by 17-14. That looked like a whole different Penn State team in the second, and they spent a lot of time in the Northeastern zone. Penn State will start the third period on the power play.

And this one ends 1-0 for Northeastern. Penn State took 2 penalties in the third and Northeastern took 1. Penn State led the shots on goal by 27-23. The first period was pretty sloppy, but Penn State really started to look like themselves in the second and the third. Nobody comes to mind as having had a superstar game or anything, but Tessa Janecke had a couple of real rockets for shots, and almost tied it up late. Tomorrow should be a good one.

The program is past moral victories, but heading on the road to Northeastern and losing 1-0 in the first game without what looks like having played in a scrimmage is a positive as long as the team bounces back tomorrow.

PSU dominated the 2nd and 3rd, and physically dominated NE, but had a sloppy first period that cost them the game. Too many penalties in a row. Seemed like the NE players are just not a strong physically. Hopefully, Penn State wins tomorrow.

Also penn state missed probably 10 passes that would have led to shots on goal but ended up as turnovers or icing. Frustrating first game, but they will be good when they put it together.

Bartowski - you predicted Stecker on the Janecke Gough line and you are Nostradamus. 5 d is also a bit of a surprise, but not unprecedented.

I predicted stecker was going to play D. But i do remember her playing with the janecke line last year when gough missed a game.
