2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

Official PSU schedule release: https://gopsusports.com/news/2023/6...-womens-hockey-releases-2023-24-schedule.aspx

Penn State out of conference opponents include Northeastern, Colgate & Yale --> no WCHA or NEWHA teams on the schedule this year.

Good to see Colgate and Yale on the schedule. With the player losses at Northeastern, I don't suspect they will be nearly as strong as they've been over the last few years. After last season's strength of schedule, it seems as though this schedule is a step backwards. Any word on more transfers coming to PSU outside of the two announced last week? Is there any scouting report on the incoming first year players?

Ten games against ECAC teams will be a great barometer out of conference plus the number one Hockey East Team plus a pesky UCONN. That looks pretty good to me.

PSU also announced incoming grad transfer Maggie MacEachern (D, Colgate) back in April. Her brother Connor played for the PSU men's team so there's a family connection. As for first years, so far they've announced Karolina Hengelmuller (D, Austria -- she's played for the Austrian national team) and Stella Retrum (F, Maple Grove MN) --> I don't have a scouting report on either beyond the official announcement: https://gopsusports.com/news/2022/11/10/womens-ice-hockey-welcomes-two-on-national-signing-day.aspx

I'm wondering if they're are any other forwards coming that they haven't announced yet -- PSU lost 4 forwards (2 graduated + 2 transferred) and only have announced 2 incoming forwards.

The summer doldrums:. The new Swede is taller than the old Swede. The new girl must be 6'2. Good to see Newkirk working in Sweden in some capacity.
Lobdell received an invite to Lake Placid.

Any eyes in the sky on the transfers and or new players? Mercyhurst already played games in Sweden this summer and Robert Morris is back. It should be a nail biting type of year. Is the Swede playing offense or defense based on Kampersal's comment that she can play both? Janecke looks ready to take that big Sophomore step that PSU players seem to take. Gough, Bothun, Lobdell and Connelly are all seniors or super seniors and will be counted on significantly.

Defense: the incoming Swedish grad student (Alva Johnsson) is rostered as defense, and she's a big girl, so that should plug at least a bit of the defensive gap left by Ganagrosa, Hemminger, and Uihlein. I don't know a thing about her style of play, but I hope they teach her how CHA defense is played...a little "gritty"...*cough*. The other defensive grad student is the transfer from Colgate (Maggie MacEachern), so along with senior Lyndie Lobdell there will be some leadership on the blue line. The freshman defender from Austria (Karolina Hengelmuller) has a bunch of various U18 experience, and was on the Austrian national team from 2019-22, for what that's worth.

Offense: I'm really eager to see what Tessa Janecke does this season. As a freshman, she didn't have much trouble adjusting to D-1, and she played on the national team, too, so it will be interesting and fun to see how she progresses this year. Another forward I'm anxious to watch is incoming freshman Stella Retrum from Maple Grove, MN. She's supposed to be a hot shot, so we'll see how that plays out at the D-1 level. Incoming senior transfer Brianna Brooks played the last three seasons at UNH, but I haven't heard anything about her.

I am so happy to see Robert Morris back in action, too.

The transfers of Kiara Zanon and Olivia Wallin were hard to swallow at the time, but that's worn off over time now (for me, at least). I can't wait for this season to start!

Hopefully, the team will be able to find three lines that work like last year. It's nice to see all three goalies back. 7 d is going to be a challenge for the coaching staff.

I just took a look at the forwards, and I can't even start to put three lines together. I can't even finish a Tessa Janecke/Julie Gough line.
