2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

Very nice, loud crowd of 1413 for the season opener. 7th largest crowd in program history. Penn State had some good chances but there's definitely still work to do early in the season on the offense with the new lines. Josie made some great saves. Rene Gangarosa, Izzy Heminger, Mallory Uihlein, and Courtney Correia were there for the banner raising and did the ceremonial puck drop which was nice to see.

Here are the lines for game two against UConn at 2:00 Eastern, and wow...talk about a shakeup!

Given the lack of offense in the first 3 games, a shake-up was probably needed. Roberts was playing well yesterday so curious to see how she does playing with Janecke.

After one, it's UConn up 1-0 on a power play goal. Tessa Janecke took the only penalty of the period, and Penn State leads the shots on goal by 10-7. No further comment, Your Honor.

Still 1-0 UConn after two periods. UConn took two penalties and Penn State took one. Penn State leads the shots on goal by 22-12. Penn State started looking better in that period, but passing drills might be the order of the day this coming week.

That's an oomph for a tie with that shot total, but that could have been an L.

They were dominating possession but couldn't get pucks in the net -- it was a frustrating game to watch. Another nice crowd of 1507 (5th largest crowd ever) and I assume that's the record by far for total attendance (2920) for a series!

The fans turning out is so great! Normally you don't have crowds like this at this time of the year. I read on the Colgate forum, the pep band was there. PSU needs to do better than one time a year. I like to see he changed up the lines.

Nice to see two strong crowds. It will be interesting to see if they continue showing up for the women's team once the men start their season. Good for Machado scoring two goals at clutch times. It will be telling to see how the lines gel against a tough Colgate team this weekend.

#11 Penn State starts their 12-game road trip tonight at #3 Colgate. Colgate split with #2 Ohio State in two very close games last weekend, one of them going to OT, so this is going to be a tough series. Still, I'm glad Penn State doesn't schedule powderpuffs to start a season.

It's going to be interesting to see what Jeff Kampersal does with lines this weekend, after completely shuffling things around for last week's series with UConn. I know these non-conference games are about getting things dialed in before conference play starts, but I hope by now he's got a good idea of who works best with who. It was obvious against UConn that the lines were a completely new arrangement, as passing wasn't very tight at all, and it ended up being a more defensive series. It also wasn't hard to see that Penn State no longer has five of last year's top six scorers, with only Tessa Janecke returning. Speaking of Janecke, I didn't know she was leading the nation in faceoff wins, so kudos to her for working on that part of her game.

The series is streaming on ESPN+.

Here are tonight's lines at Colgate - another shakeup!

Maddy Christian - Brianna Brooks - Katelyn Roberts
Mya Vaslet - Tessa Janecke - Julie Gough
Alva Johnsson - Lexi Bedier - Alyssa Machado
Carrie Byrnes - Maeve Connolly - Stella Retrum

Maggie MacEachern - Karley Garcia
Karolina Hengelmuller - Lyndie Lobdell
Kendall Butze - Leah Stecker

After one, it's Colgate up 2-1 on Penn State. The stats aren't accurate, so I won't bother with those. Colgate scored on a 6-on-5 delayed penalty and a 5-on-3 penalty, so no even strength scoring except from Penn State's Lyndie Lobdell. Penn State is definitely in this one and not getting outplayed...they just need to figure out what ECAC refs call penalties.

(Edit: this announcer was lost at the start. He called this a "must win" game for both teams, said Penn State hadn't won a game in a long time, then when Penn State got a power play he said it was their first of the season, etc etc...good lord)

After two, it's Colgate up 3-1 on another power play goal. Penn State isn't out of this game by any means, but the penalties are killing them. Both goalies are standing on their heads and making some highlight saves. This looks like a completely different Penn State team than the one that played UConn.

Colgate takes the 6-2 win tonight. Penn State spent way too much time in the penalty box, and they can't give a #3 team that much time on power plays. Penn State looked good, or better than last week against UConn, but they're really missing the scorers they had last year. One thing I didn't like and it didn't work was that when Colgate moved into the offensive zone, Penn State would just collapse down into what looked like penalty kill mode. All that did was give Colgate all the time they wanted to cycle the puck and create a mass of bodies in front of Josie Bothun. She can't stop what she can't see.

Back at it tomorrow at 2:00.

Well when your d just back up, you are giving the other team an escort into your zone. You lost your two best gap defenders that were great at blowing up plays on the way into the zone. I thought for sure the coaching staff would go two d every other and the other three one every three against Colgate and instead it's six d. I'm kind of surprised that it wasn't Lobdell and Garcia returning to last year's pairing with three sets of two. Two d scoring is a surprise. Kampersal needs to figure out how to get Janecke going and I think he is up for the task as he is back to switching lines left and right.

Kampersal had defender Leah Stecker as a forward against UConn, but for Colgate she's back to defender. I was trying to figure out how forward Carrie Byrnes made it into the lineup yesterday as more than the usual "extra skater" (where she's lingered since her shot at the transfer portal didn't get her to a new team).

It's always good to see the defense score goals, especially if the forwards aren't doing it. Five goals in five games isn't a good look. They should be very happy they have Josie Bothun doing cartwheels between the pipes. Five of last year's top six scorers are gone, and that's really obvious so far, but the season is early.
