2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

Elsewhere in the CHA: the Lindenwood-RMU game was suspended yesterday and they're going to play the 3rd period of that game this afternoon prior to the second game. I see references to "unsafe rink conditions" on Twitter -- what happened?

All I've seen on that was something like "facilities issue", but no explanation for what that means. Maybe whatever keeps the ice frozen had a glitch? I can't think of anything else.

PSU goes down 2-0, with another late goal against in the second, only for PSU to get an even later goal in the second period with under a minute left. PSU finally tied it up with five or six left in the third only to lose in ot. RIT is definitely pesky. Two recent ot losses show there is work to do.

I saw on twitter that there was an ammonia leak.
edit: twitter links aren't allowed, but it was posted by @DeemerSentry.

Yesterday PSU opened up scoring midway through the 3rd, then an RIT defensemen took a 5 min major for hitting from behind and a game DQ. PSU's remaining 3 goals were scored on that major. Overall, both games we close.

Penn State and Syracuse square off at Pegula Ice Arena this weekend, Friday at 6:00 (Eastern) and Saturday at 2:00 (Eastern), with the series being livestreamed on BTN+. Syracuse is solidly in the basement in the CHA, with only one conference win, so there is no reason Penn State shouldn't sweep Syracuse, and sweep them hard. This is also a good chance for Jeff Kampersal to give Katie DeSa another series in net. Penn State is having an autograph session after tonight's game, and a "skate with the players" after tomorrow's game. Also, kids under 12 get in free on Saturday.

Penn State was two games up on Mercyhurst until last weekend's split with RIT - now the two are only one game apart in first and second place. Robert Morris and RIT are tied for third, two games behind Mercyhurst and three games behind Penn State. Any miscues by either Penn State or Mercyhurst the rest of the way turns the CHA regular season title race into its usual unpredictable scramble. Penn State and Mercyhurst face each other in two weeks, for the last time in the regular season, and that series will probably go a long way in deciding the CHA regular season champ.

Great analysis. Syracuse has dominated the series over the years, but not lately. Syracuse is trotting out a goalie with a .90 save percentage and that usually spells trouble for a team doing that. There are no gimmes for this version of the Penn State Team with losses in OT to Union and RIT. Fingers crossed for your prediction.

After one, Syracuse is up 1-0 at Penn State. Shots on goal are 16-7 for Penn State, and each team took a penalty. Penn State is getting the better chances and a lot of time in the Syracuse zone.

After two, it's tied up 1-1 on a goal from Mya Vaslet. Shots on goal are 24-8 for Penn State. Syracuse took 3 penaties and Penn State took 2. One of Penn State's penalties was a 5-minute game misconduct on Tessa Janecke for some reason. The refs were reviewing a hit on Mya Vaslet, so no playing was going on, and at the end of the review Janecke ends up with a major and a game misconduct, so who knows. Maybe Janecke ran her mouth at a ref or something, but she's done for the night.

(EDIT: The Penn State Twitter account says Janecke got a game misconduct for head contact, but it must have been way away from the play somewhere).

How embarrassing...Penn State loses 3-1 to Syracuse. Shots on goal were 42-13 for Penn State, and penalties were 7 for Syracuse and 2 for Penn State. Syracuse got a shorthanded goal that smoked Josie Bothun so badly she got hurt on it, and Annie Spring had to finish the game in net. There's no excuse for losing like this to a team that had a grand total of one conference win coming into this game.

Why do you suppose this happened?

It could be lots of things. I thought there was too much trying to be fancy with passes in the offensive zone, and passing overall just wasn't very sharp (hitting skates instead of sticks, or too far ahead, etc), Tessa Janecke getting herself kicked out, the defense not very crisp breaking out of the Penn State zone, the powerplay being so ineffective...and, of course, Syracuse came to play, so you can't discount the work they put in. Their goalie played a great game, too.

What did you see that kept Penn State out of this one?

The livestream died, but after one it's scoreless at Penn State. Both teams took a penalty, and shots on goal are 15-6 for Penn State. Before the video died, it was pretty much all Penn State. The announcers said Jeff Kampersal was disappointed with the fancy stuff players were trying last night, and wants the team to "play gritty, not pretty".

Katie DeSa got the start in net today, and for some odd reason the pep band decided to show up to a women's hockey game, too.

After two, Penn State is up 3-0 on goals from Tessa Janecke, Lyndie Lobdell, and Alva Johnsson. Syracuse took two penalties, and shots on goal are 36-8 for Penn State.

The up and down continues to be a thing. Alva Johnson seems to be on a hot streak. And Desa is getting some help this game with the three goals. Bizarre yesterday that the officials look at a penalty on Vaslet only to give Janecke a game misconduct. The pep band at a game is awesome. I think it adds so much to the atmosphere. Let's hope they can make another game

Penn State makes it a split with a 5-0 win over Syracuse on third period goals from Mya Vaslet and Kendall Butze. Penalties were 6 for Syracuse and 1 for Penn State. Shots on goal were 53-12 for Penn State.

Bothun has had a nice year. Spring came in for relief again like Dartmouth. Then Spring got the next game against Dartmouth and the team won and Spring received the CHA goalie of the week. Desa got the start against Union and the team lost in ot. Spring got the next start against Union and won. Desa got the start today and won. It's a competitive goalie room. It's nice to see as Mercyhurst had two goalies last year and I'm sure it helps as the season is so long. I hope the Bothun girl is okay.

Um, it very obvious where the turning point was.

Here is every team in the CHA’s gameplan…hack, hold, slash, hook and do whatever you can to stop Janecke. The reason it works is that she is physically stronger than probably everyone she plays so she seems unphased so the refs don’t call it. But if she pushes or tries to get away the girls go flying off and she gets a penalty. I’m sure she is frustrated. Then you have people who just make comments thinking that she gets “herself” kicked out, like she is not a team player and does it on purpose. (Not sure how you can’t see what’s going on). Doesn’t it seem weird that Janecke does not get a lot of passes in the offensive zone? It’s because she has someone hanging off her. Then you ask yourself, does this happen with other teams? Well, with the top teams in the country, there are multiple players that are upper end scoring threats that you have to stop, so these game plans do not work against them.
Then the comment, Bothum got burned so bad that she got hurt. Why did she get burned bad? I think someone else had a turnover, and Bothum did what she could to save a teammate’s mistake, and ended up pulling a muscle or whatever.
