2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

On a side note, Josie Bothun was named the Hockey Coaches Association (HCA) Co-National Goaltender of the Month, the second of her career.

That's a bad loss and destroys any push upwards in the rankings. Oh well, time to right the ship before it is a catastrophic weekend. Coming out of the break is not easy for some teams. That's a disappointing fan turnout for a Friday 6 pm game.

Sigh. It was a frustrating game to watch. I was also disappointed in the turnout. Students aren't back yet as classes start Monday and that means a lot of faculty/staff may not be back yet either. There's a snowstorm coming tomorrow which probably means another low attendance game.

Nice to see DeSa get some time in goal. The team didn't do her any favors by only putting one puck in the net.

Josie Bothun and Annie Spring are both senior goalies, and Katie DeSa is a sophomore, so she's it next year (unless we're still in the bonus year stuff next season and Bothun stays for a fifth year). I'm glad Kampersal put DeSa in net, and I hope she gets today's game, too. I didn't see Bothun on the bench and dressed for the game yesterday, so I hope she's okay. Hopefully everyone shook off the rust yesterday and they get back to their game today - yesterday wasn't a very good look, but not a big surprise after almost a month off. It should be some fun hockey today.

1:00 (Eastern) game time!

Yes, the colorful BU coach had some great quotes and one of them was "you never know what you are going to get after break on who has been getting ice, who has been sitting around and etc.". Penn State for the most part has been dishing it out to other teams after the break and yesterday it reversed.

Nice on Desa getting a chance, the team did have 15 Blocks, but yes the team broke the golden rule of putting up three goals.

Sometimes you run into a hot goalie.

I'm sure the locker room has been anything but warm and fuzzy this morning after last night's debacle.

Bothun was not on the bench yesterday and she's not on the line chart today so I hope she's back by next week. Bothun & Spring are eligible for a 5th year next year. There were no goalies announced as 2024 signees so I'm guessing Josie is planning to be back.

After one, it's Penn State up 2-0 on goals from Lyndie Lobdell and Karolina Hengelmuller. Shots on goal are 14-5 for Penn State, and Union took the only two penalties. Man, it's a whole different Penn State team today, and they look like themselves again. Annie Spring got the start in net today for Penn State.

After two, Penn State is up 4-2 on goals from Katelyn Roberts and Julie Gough. Union took two more penalties, and the shots on goal are 27-11 for Penn State.

Penn State takes game two by a score of 6-2 on goals from Mya Vaslet and Stella Retrum. Union took the only penalty of the period, but it was a five-minute major that cost them two goals. Shots on goal were 48-14 for Penn State.

That's more like it. Consistency moving forward is going to be the key. Nothing like giving up a goal 24 seconds into the period to make things more stressful and the staff will have to start banging the drum on no goals in the first two minutes or last two minutes of a period.

I didn't even notice it, but Penn State didn't take a single penalty today...that's a bit of a rarity this season, so good for them!

Penn State heads to RIT for a weekend series on Friday (6:00 Eastern) and Saturday (2:00 Eastern), with both games being streamed on FloHockey (soooooo...nope).

RIT is currently tied with Robert Morris for third in the CHA, one game behind second place Mercyhurst and three games behind first place Penn State. If anyone is a surprise this year in the CHA, or at least a good surprise, it's RIT (the not-so-good surprise being Syracuse tanking). Is RIT dominant? No, but they're a lot better than they've been in a long time, and that's good to see.

This is Penn State's last away series until the final road trip on February 9-10, and that's only a quick ride to Pittsburgh, so the grinding travel of the early season is over. After this weekend, Penn State faces Syracuse, Lindenwood, and Mercyhurst at home, Robert Morris in Pittsburgh, and then ends the regular season with RIT at home. Penn State has a CHA regular season title there for the taking, and (on paper, at least) nobody but Mercyhurst is a challenge to that.

Freshman defender Karolina Hengelmuller returned to the lineup last weekend, which was good news for Jeff Kampersal, and scored her first collegiate goal. Tessa Janecke hasn't been scoring a ton of goals this season, but she's been setting up a lot of them and scoring a ton of assists - she leads the team in both, as well as leading with a +16, and has 20 blocked shots to boot. That's some pretty all-around play from Janecke.

RIT had more problems after the break than PSU, getting swept handily by Brown. Hopefully, PSU can duplicate what Jade Iginla, Jarome Iginla's daughter, did against RIT in what was a big scoring weekend for her.

I didn't watch the game, but Penn State beat RIT 4-0 tonight on four third-period goals from Tessa Janecke, Katelyn Roberts, and two from Stella Retrum. After two periods it was still scoreless, and going by the stats everything was very even, but Penn State lit a fire in the third period. Shots on goal were 36-22 for Penn State. RIT took 5 penalties and Penn State took 3.

Former PSU coach Brown had RIT right there through two. But, the goalie couldn't stay hot the whole game. Bothun with the shutout.
