2023-24 Penn State Nittany Lions

After two, Penn State is up 3-0 on a goal from Brianna Brooks. Shots on goal are 34-13 for Penn State. Lindenwood took two more penalties and Penn State took one.

(Mercyhurst is up 3-2 on RIT after two, so they're not going to give Penn State a two-point bump without a fight).

Three different scorers and not Janecke has to be a positive. Janecke is racking up the assists though and she is really becoming quite the distributor.

The new coaches hired by Syracuse and Lindenwood have not worked out. I'm wondering if these two will get the same patience that Celeste received. I'm guessing no since they are not an alum and former player like Celeste.

Mercyhurst has the lead right now 3-2. Boucher is a handful.

Penn State takes the sweep by a score of 6-1 on goals from Katelyn Roberts, Mya Vaslet, and a second goal from Briana Brooks. Shots on goal were 43-21 for Penn State, and penalties were four for each team.

Mercyhurst is up 5-2 on RIT with two minutes left in their game, so no change in the standings there between Penn State and Mercyhurst.

Lindenwood coach is in her first year right? And record similar to RMU and RIT. I think she’s doing ok but when she loses Neitzke it will be a challenge.

tough to see Bothun injured even if it’s good for Mercyhurst. Maybe she’ll do a 5th year. She definitely helped elevate this program even if the transfer portal was trying to undo the progress at the same time.

What a tough way for Josie Bothun to finish her time at Penn State, if she doesn't come back for a fifth year. Reminds me of Jenna Brenneman's misfortunes a few years back. On the bright side, Katie DeSa has looked good in net, but she's going to get her first real test next weekend against Mercyhurst, and you know they're going to go hard at her.

...even if the transfer portal was trying to undo the progress at the same time.

It's hard to say what this team would be this year if Kiara Zanon and Olivia Wallin hadn't transferred, but I do love how this year's Janecke/Roberts/Retrum top line has worked out. Katelyn Roberts has already more than tripled her points from last season and is third in scoring right now, and Stella Retrum already plays beyond being a freshman and is only two points behind Roberts. I think their being on a line with Tessa Janecke has almost automatically made them elevate their games. Others have upped their games, too, and I wonder if Zanon bailing on the program was almost a motivating factor for this team.

No way around it Bothun is a big loss. However, when Brenneman got hurt, Burke ended up getting CHA goalie of the year. Both Brenneman and Burke played for the Whitecaps so can Desa or Spring be the next Burke? It helps to have a paid goalie coach on the staff so fingers crossed.

Sisti and Mercyhurst always seem to have a knack with getting production out of players that struggled for playing time early in their careers like Robbilard and now Kromer.

Mercyhurst should hold onto that guy as long as he wants to coach. I'm sure the new coaches at Lindenwood and Syracuse are working their butts off. Hopefully, they have a patient ad.

Neitzke is not a 200 ft player. This is why she was not picked up when she was on the portal. Watch her, kind of floats around by the blue line. Maybe she is told to do that? She is a talented scorer, but you can be if you put 80% of your effort into offense.

I'm sure lots of schools were interested in Nietzke, maybe just not the schools she was interested in or maybe she was not going to get the scholarship she thought she would upon transferring. I cannot say I go out of my way to watch Lindenwood so I will defer to bartowski on his or her observations.

Desa and Lobdell were hm. I noticed that Mercyhurst has the younger sister of Emma Nuutinen who also received an hm. Her name is Sofia Nuutinen.

Big series this weekend!

A huge series, for sure. Penn State is currently only up one game (2 points) on Mercyhurst, so this weekend's series with them is a must win. A split really doesn't do Penn State any favors. The baffling Penn State losses against RIT and Syracuse this month might end up being a real pain in the arse - those were 4 points they could've used right now, and it would've had them up three games on Mercyhurst heading into this weekend.

Everyone has six games left...12 points up for grabs. As usual in late-season CHA standings, the regular season title is still anyone's guess, but realistically is down to Penn State or Mercyhurst. If Penn State can sweep Mercyhurst this weekend, they will gain that important third game up (and be 6 points up on them) with two weekends left to play. If they split, Penn State can't drop another game the rest of the way unless someone takes points from Mercyhurst, too. I'd love to see Penn State be in a position of not having to rely on anyone else's performance.

Big, big, big weekend ahead!

PSU up 4-0. Lobdell, Christian, Brooks and Janecke. All things going PSU's way including a bloop goal.

3-2 win in 0T. Surprising sweep. No Bothun, No Gough, apparently no problem. PSU is on track for 20+ wins.

Awesome come from behind OT win after going down 2-0 in the second period! Really nice crowd of ~1300 this afternoon and the band was there -- pretty sure that's the second game the band has been at this season.

Kampersal has caught lightning in a bottle twice with Desa and the Stecker Christian line combo. The band at a second game is great for the program. 1300 at the game is nice. The next milestone for the program is 2000 fans. Sisti is probably giving the Mercyhurst players a very uncomfortable bus ride home.

Desa had a save in the first game that was huge. If Mercyhurst converts that sequence, it could have been a different game.
