2022 Olympic Games

I think the concerning thing is the lack of young scorers on the US team. Knight and Kessel were the top 2 scorers. Presumably they won't be back in 4 years. I was really surprised that in the final 3 games in Beijing this team just could not score very easily. The Canadians have younger players in Nurse and Fillier that can score, who is that going to be for the US? I thought Abby Roque and Grace Zumwinkel would have bigger impacts. Having watched Roque for 4 yrs at LaBahn arena she has special talent. While she had opportunities and was great on faceoffs, the only goal she scored was an ENG.

When the Gophers played the Badgers, my eyes were always in Zumwinkle when she was on the ice because I feared her more than any other visiting player. Again her Olympics were so-so and I thought she should have been given more opportunity to be that additional scorer.

Lots can change in 4 years. We have a number of World Championships (1st one this August) first to see how the makeup of the 2 lineups are going to change.

FWIW, with maybe the exception of her senior year, Roque wasn't a particularly 'big' goal scorer at Wisconsin, certainly not in the category of Knight or Decker or Kessel. (goal totals of 8, 11, 11, 26) She was much more a 'facilitator' of the others. (assists 20, 30, 32, 32).

Certainly, I could be wrong, but I wouldn't expect that to change much on national and Olympics teams.

It's got nothing to do with Badger players or Gopher players.

You say it's time to move on from older players, you have to understand that somebody is gonna say "like who?".

But the way you put "move on from older players" makes it sound like you think that was at least part of why the US was beaten. And IMO, that was pretty clearly not the case, So I wondered if there was someone on the roster I wasn't thinking of, and so I looked.

Watching the game last night, I was cognizant of the idea/likelihood that we were watching Knight's last Olympic game. When it looked like the US was going to end up with only one goal, I was happy she was the one who got it. If you think that is simply because she was a Badger... well, that's your issue, I guess. To some extent, the 2022 roster did 'move on'; no more Meghan Duggan, no more Lams.

If yo want to "pass on the discussion", then don't start the discussion.

Exhibit A on said rabbit hole.

I tried being nice. I don't have to understand anything from you and I certainly don't give a **** whether you think I should or should not start a discussion.

She is definitely a top end facilitator in college. She really was not able to be terribly impactful last night. Curl is developing into that type of player.

I can't see Knight being gone in 4 years. She's thier best F.

I happened just now to see video of an interview she and Stecklein and Roque and Coyne (I think it was) did on this morning's Today show, and the last question was "who's gonna be there in 26 to take on the Canadians again?", and Knight's hand was the first one up, immediately. Stecklein was much more hesitant, and the hosts kind of joked about how there was some variation in how long it took all four hands to make it up.

I hope Knight can manage it, but...

Doesn't the question at this point (meaning with respect to players of her age) usually become "when do they start getting on with the rest of their lives" and start to attempt to maximize their financial potential in their post hockey career so as to at least be financially self supporting to be able to have the option of pursuing the normal life path of most people like being able to buy a home, start a family etc., after all these years of sacrifice?

Or does the allure of having been in the limelight for so long have some degree of magnetic pull for some of these players more than for others?

And, FWIW, I agree with Lindsay. I think the red Canadian jerseys with the black numbers and names stunk. Almost impossible to read either. What were those in charge thinking? But their white jerseys were sharp as were the Finns white jerseys, very clean and simple which I thought was a nice change.

I also agree with this. I think the announcer also had issues. Most of the time when describing a play if a player from Canada had the puck it was "Canada bringing it up the ice" or "Canada shooting" or some other wording without getting into the specific players name. You certainly could not tell who was on the ice for Canada most of the time in terms of the lines or defensive pairings.

In fairness to the US they lost by a goal. But they didn’t look like they were firing on all cylinders either, very fair to say.

The US players who got ice time played their hearts out. No question about it.

I’ll say that it appears Kingsbury has the support of the very top brass at Hockey Canada. Can the same
be said for Million?

No taxi squad, a 19 year old on the roster who they are afraid to put on the ice, a botched attempt to bring a taxi player over when it was too little too late, Corkum’s stunt quitting before 2021 Worlds, the 2018 4 Nations where they didn’t have a coach days before the tourney and Reagan Carey abruptly resigned or got fired.

A 2019 world championship WIN on the strength of a player named Annie Pankowski who didn’t get centralized for the next big tourney.

Pannek and Cameranesis development seems to have stalled after great success 4 years ago.
Trying to develop without a league and in a pandemic. If USA Hockey took steps to help it wasn’t reported.

Huge credit to the US players that got ice time - they played their hearts out. But eyebrow raising stuff from USA Hockey when you look at the body of work of the last 4 years.

Player contract is up for renewal in Aug 2022 during worlds. We’ll see what happens next. It was reported yesterday that USA Hockey will host the recently cancelled U18 Worlds, this spring. Great to see.

In June 2022. Exact dates and location will be announced at a later date. Basically, from what I understand, USA Hockey stepped up to put on the tournament. I don't know how much IIHF is behind it, other than sanctioning it. I'm hoping it's in Buffalo again, like in 2015. :-)

If you should happen to watch a replay of the men's curling bronze medal match (US v. Canada) many members of the US women's hockey team are in attendance. Lots of nice shots of them in the crowd.

It looks like the link is correct although it comes up with what it thinks is a spelling issue. I'll try to link it and see what happens.

Thanks for reposting the link. No need to quibble with the author's write-up, which is primarily based on stats, which can't be disputed.

I will say, however, that in the two games vs. the U.S. I thought Canada's team play, overall, was better designed. Better (smarter) puck possession that led to fewer turnovers in critical areas. To me it looked like Canada was the more 'mature' team - I liked the way they defended between the blue lines, allowing very few odd-man breaks. In their D zone quite often they would allow the Americans to skate around and take long attempts from the D, or pass it into the corner, but rarely allowed them to penetrate for close-in, point-blank opportunities. And on the rare occasions when they did, the U.S. forwards failed to capitalize.

Bottom line: the better team deserved to win, and they did.
