2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award

I'm still not convinced Watts shouldn’t be on Team Canada....such a consistent producer.
I hate it when a player I respect makes Team Canada, then I don't like them anymore, even those who played for Ohio State. At least when they play Team USA.
American first, Buckeye second.

How is the selection committee determined? Is it a rotating panel of coaches or a fixed group year over year?
Coaches and other hockey personnel (e.g., USA Hockey scout) serve on the committee for three-year terms. Media personnel serve two-year terms. The majority of the committee are coaches.

Encouraging to hear you say Shirley and Maltais (two Canadians) are best in the WCHA, and we all recognize Watts offensive gifts. I’m so ready for some Canadian wins at the international level. If they don’t win worlds there are literally zero reasons not to overhaul that entire roster.

As for Patty Talk: I was thinking Frankel but forgot about the new goalie award. Kind of hoping for revenge of the goalies chaos... Frankel for Kaz and another for goalie of the year. Unless it’s same voters I assume this could happen.

I really like Shirley's game, but if I had to pick one it's Watts all the way. She has more goals and assists and she is the one scoring clutch goals.

Hard to argue against Frankel setting goaltending records.

I think Watts and Lonergan should be the other two finalists. Watts is doing a lot of the heavy lifting for Wisconsin's offense. Lonergan has played by far the hardest competition on the list. (She did not play against LIU).

Agreed. Giguere racks up her points against the LIU and SLU’s of the world.

4-2-6 against LIU, still 17 points in 17 games against the rest, which would be the hardest goaltending combination of anyone else on the list. Also SLU is a mid-table ECAC team, but solid defensively in general and especially with Morgan in net.

I'll look into it later but I doubt this is any more the case than any other top player scoring more against bad teams. Giguère had the opening goal or helper on 27 of 35 of the first goals Clarkson scored in games so she kinda racks up points against anyone.

Finalists named this morning:
Aerin Frankel, G, Northeastern
Daryl Watts, F, Wisconsin
Grace Zumwinkle, F, Minnesota

Last one a bit of a surprise over Lonergan or Mueller. Alina Mueller has been on the ice for one (1) of the even-strength goals Northeastern has allowed this season. Too bad playing defense gets you nowhere.

Have you even seen Zumwinkle's play?

Not a ton admittedly. I get they liked her goal scoring, through both Watts and Lonergan were better per game and per TOI and Lonergan played tougher competition. Was towards the bottom of the list in term of TOI and PK TOI (and pct of team PK time played).

If the award goes to the best penalty killer, then that's not her. Like Watts, she's on the list because she's an elite goal scorer, but they are two vastly different players. Where Watts is speed and finesse, Zumwinkle is speed and strength. Watts can pick a corner; Zumwinkle can blow the puck by someone. I don't think either is especially strong at making teammates better. As for the numbers, Watts had a better supporting cast; I think that's obvious this year.

In terms of someone who separated from the competition this year, I think that's Frankel.

Not a ton? LOL

tougher competion? LOL

Penalty kill? LOL

Your shtick...It's pretty funny.

Agree with ARM...Seems like it will be the goalie.

I mean I think it's definitely Frankel, but...

Yes Lonergan did not get to play MSU, Bemidji State, or St. Cloud. And yes I do value more than just goals and assists for forwards. Do you want a player that scores a lot (Zumwinkle) or a player that scores more (Lonergan) that also plays the PK?

Lonergan

“An award of The USA Hockey Foundation, the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award was established in 1998 and is presented annually to the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. Other selection criteria include outstanding individual and team skills, sportsmanship, performance in the clutch, personal character, competitiveness and a love of hockey. Consideration is also given to academic achievement and civic involvement.”

These players are obviously all great hockey players – but based on being the top player I think you have to look at all the stats and the other items listed above (not only points as noted why there are goalies and D every year – being the top is not ONLY goals). While points are important, take a look at all of the players contributions – and my understanding is that it is for each specific year, if it was for a total career it would not be an annual award. So let’s take a quick look:

Obviously Frankel does not have the same stats and is no doubt deserving of top 3 (but with a separate goalie award now it is debatable as to whether they get both – as there is not a separate “forward” or “defensive” award) so looking at the rest of the field I see why some are confused as to the top 3 or more importantly who was left out of the top 3. The award is not a “most goals scored” award, Patty was an all-around 200 foot player from what I have read and made those around her better.
Fontaine having the goals, assists, blocks etc…has impressive numbers, especially as a defensemen. The 3 highest points per game go to Watts, Mueller and Zanon. Mueller hands down with only the numbers above should arguably be in the top 3 – she has the goals, the assists, the +/- and a few blocked shots. Add to that Zanon (as a freshman) with 24 blocked shots and a +24, 4 GWG etc.. For a forward, impressive along with all the other stats – right there with Watts and Mueller. So looking at the above I can narrow it to a top 5 and that would have been Mueller, Watts, Zanon, Fontaine and Frankel – from there the committee has a debate. Outside of that all of the players again, are exceptional but if you are looking at the full body of work, not sure they got the top 3 correct.

Where'd you get blocked shots for Fontaine?

Giguère had 31 blocked shots according to InStat
Lonergan: 21 blocked shots
Maltais: 44

Also InStat has 44 blocked shots for Watts and 12 for Shirley for what it's worth.

I know the results have been already been tabulated, but Watts has defeated Zum and Frankel now, should be a no-brainer for Watts.
