It is all Mankato early on in the second. Michaelis had a grade A opportunity in the slot after McNeely's slapper from the point hit Poolman in front of Scheel. The puck went right to Michaelis' stick, who wristed the puck on net that looked certain to beat Scheel stick side, but Scheel kicked his leg out just in time to keep North Dakota up by a goal. The Mavericks are pouring pressure on North Dakota though early in the second period, already throwing four shots on net early on.

Controversy in Detroit! While the Mavericks were dominating play early in the middle stanza, Cole Smith was skating towards the far boards to clear the puck out of the UND end, when he was absolutely clobbered into the boards by Duehr. Coach Berry and the North Dakota bench instantly called for a five minute major for checking from behind. The Hockey East officials reviewed, but ultimately stayed with the 2 minute boarding minor. The Fighting Hawks will head to the powerplay, but just for a couple minutes at most.

Textbook penalty kill for Minnesota State. North Dakota just unable to gain possession in the attacking end. The purple fans treated to a lot of watching the puck flying back to the North Dakota end. Minnesota State is back at full strength.

The Mavericks gain control of the puck in their own end, and Zmolek lasered a pass up the far boards that is right on the tape of Sowder's stick and the Mavs are on a 3x2. Sowder pushes it into the North Dakota zone, and dishes the puck over to Michaelis in the slot , who wastes little time flipping a wrister over Scheel's glove, and we are all square!

Minnesota State all over North Dakota again. The Fighting Hawks are really having trouble clearing the puck out of their own end, and the Mavs are just dominating possession at the moment. UND doing a good job of limiting the grade A opportunities, but Mankato on the front foot at the moment. SOG 20-13 Minnesota State.

And just as quickly as the Mavs are dominating, North Dakota nearly recaptures the lead. Aamodt attempts to pinch in along the far boards, but Harrison Blaisdell pokes the puck past the Mavs blueliner and all of a sudden its a 2x1 going the other way, as Blaisdell races up with Dixen Bowen. As they skate into the Mavericks' end, Carroll slides over to take away the shot, and Blaisdell saucers a beautiful pass over Carroll's stick and right on Bowen's tape. Bowen hesitates just a moment though, and while he still had some room on the glove side, McKay flashes leather on Bowen's wrister to keep the game tied at 1 apiece.

GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLL. Parker Tuomie.

Michaelis wins a puck battle behind the UND net, and passes the puck along the near boards. McNeely gets the puck on his stick, and flings a wrister that goes wide of the near post, deflects off the boards and right to Tuomie at the bottom of the far circle. Tuomie slides the puck along the ice that sneaks through Scheel's five hole, and the Mavericks gain their first lead of the night.

Coach Berry does not look pleased. The Mavericks are putting on a show right now in Detroit. Following the Tuomie goal, Lutz and Jaremko nearly teamed up for another. Lutz brought the puck in along the far boards, skated down into the far corner, then passed it along the boards down to Jaremko behind the UND net. Jaremko then skated along the near boards and up to the top of the near circle before finding just enough space to thread a pass back to Lutz backdoor. Lutz's one-timer was just off target however, and went straight into Scheel's belly.

North Dakota really finding itself in tough shape at the moment. After the Mavericks third line held the puck in the offensive zone for its entire shift, the Mavs were able to change lines, and the fourth line does the same. Exhausted, Peski finally gets control of the puck and lets it fly down the rink for icing. Coach Berry forced to call a timeout to change lines. The green fans are a little uneasy at the moment. All Mankato right now.

Minnesota State headed back to the powerplay. Michaelis dumps the puck into the UND zone, and gets hauled down by Kiersted. The Hockey East ref's arm goes straight up, and Kiersted will sit for two minutes for interference.

Apparently using Mankato's recent penalty kill as a template, North Dakota executes a beautiful PK. I don't believe the Mavs even got possession of the puck in the North Dakota zone for much longer than a second or two. Very impressive, and North Dakota gains a bit of momentum back, as North Dakota is back at full strength.
