We also caught up with Coach Berry, who said that the decision to go with Scheel over Thome was a "gut feel" tonight. Berry felt that the Seniors will have a big night tonight, and pointed to Westin Michaud and Cole Smith as the keys to pushing the Hawks to victory tonight. Berry also stressed the importance of staying out of the box, as the Mavs have been lethal with the man advantage. After wishing the Hawks' bench boss good luck, Berry thanked us and said get ready for a good one tonight.

The nerves and tension are palpable here in Detroit. Kid Rock electrified the crowd with the National Anthem, and the nearly 20,000 in attendance are on their feet.

I would have expected the business suits, Black. We did wear whites in 2000, green in 2016.

Lots of nerves in the early moments in the title game. Michaelis got control of the puck along the far boards and found Mackey at the point. Mackey ripped a wrister that went about six feet wide. Lots of action in the neutral zone since.

Minnesota State finally getting their skates underneath them. The Mavericks got the game's first shot on goal. Jaremko gathered a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated in along the far boards. He cycled the puck behind the net where Lutz gained control. Lutz circled behind the North Dakota net and found Gerard at the far circle, who ripped a one-timer that went straight into Scheel's glove.

The Mavericks are headed to the powerplay, as Nathan Smith was tripped along the near boards at the blueline by Kiersted who got caught off guard by the Freshman center's speed and tried to poke the puck away and instead got Smith's skates.

Minnesota State nearly took the early lead. Michaelis won the offensive zone draw back to Mackey, who found some space at the top of the slot. Mackey ripped a slapper that deflected off one of the North Dakota defensemen, but Scheel tracked it the whole way and got a leg on it to kick it to the far boards. About a minute left on the Mavs powerplay, and we're still scoreless.

North Dakota kills the penalty off! 2 shots on goal by the Mavs, but Scheel was up to the task. SOG 5-1 in favor of Mankato early on, but the Hawks seem to be energized by the PK.

North Dakota really controlling puck possession, but the Mavericks are doing a good job of keeping UND to the perimeter.

Of course, as I type that, Cole Smith wins a puck battle in the near corner, and muscles his way to the bottom of the near circle and rips a wrister on goal, but McKay just got his blocker over in time to deflect the puck up and over the netting.
