2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

If we're to go back 150 years to right the wrongs of the past, are we going to give money to the descendants of probably 1M or more children who grew up without fathers who died fighting to end slavery in the Civil War (I'm basing this on 300K+ union deaths and people having relatively large families back then)? I can't imagine it was easy being in that situation especially in the 1860's. Seems hypocritical to compensate one group and not the other. You'd also have to really nail down the genealogy on this as well.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Paying reparations to the descendants of slaves is a generous impulse, but... stupid. You can't find a person who isn't a descendant of slaves. Even in the US, they were of every race. Good luck finding all the records and proving lineage to determine who needs to write a check, and to whom. As for me, while partly of African descent, my ancestors didn't get here until the 1920s. I'm not writing a check on behalf of Jeff Davis.
The only reasonably possible way to address the issue is to make massive national investments into areas that are primarily African-American. Infrastructure, job training, etc. That way everyone benefits and you don't need to spend 40 years determining geneology percentages in court.
I'm actually more inclined to pay reparations to Native Americans, and give the Dakotas and Texas to the tribes so they can run the oil business as they see fit. I'll throw in California too, if they'll take it.

Only job training available is how to buy a plane ticket to Mexico or Vietnam and work there

I doubt the American public, even four presidential elections from now according to Kep, will have much objection to writing LeBron James, et al, some reparations checks.

Is it too late for the 40 acres and a mule?

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Taking this further, the descendants of the people who fought the war (for the Union) should be exempt from paying reparations to the descendants of the slaves as presumably their families already paid up from 1861-1865. Otherwise they're paying twice which isn't fair.

lolwut? That's throwing the world's fifth largest economy (and tenth if you give Texas) to a sovereign nation, a quarter of our entire GDP. That's a dumber idea than slave reparations.

How about exempting the entire state of Minnesota, because the Minnesota 1st basically saved all your as-ses

See where this goes ;)

I'm cool with that! Is this a good time to mention I'm a descendant of a Union soldier? :D

hey, I should be exempt as well... Maine contributed most soldiers proportional to population

"I fear, this war, so costly of blood and treasure, will not cease until men of the North are willing to leave good positions, and sacrifice the dearest personal interests, to rescue our country from desolation, and defend the national existence against treachery." - Joshua Chamberlain (who, btw, died in 1914 from complications from his war wounds and is considered the last casualty of the civil war)

Ok, I'll allow it.

Anyone else feel like they should be exempt?

I don't feel particularly responsible since all of my family was fishing and milking goats in northern Europe until 20 years after you guys finally got your crap together and abolished slavery.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Mom was born in Europe, and Grandpa was born on an Indian reservation. Don't remember where Grandma was born. At most, I'd be 1/8th liable.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

I see nobody actually read the article which talks about what Booker's proposal actually is :p

And once we're at it, we can tack on MN to the new nation of Dakota. They should be charging you guys rent.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

why would I do that?

trixie would rather have a pages long discussion on whether we should appoint a commission to study reparations than on reparations themselves.

Or you know, address the thing that was actually being proposed rather than just whining about how stupid something entirely different is.
