Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers VII: Bon Voyage Beto

I am talking past the initial change. As you and others here know, I am not extreme left. I don't want extreme left. Is it better than Trump? Yes. No doubt. BUT, do I want THAT extreme? No. I do not want that, either.

The "extreme left" that you're worried about are the economic policies we had under Truman and Eisenhower in the 1950s. The fact that it's 10,000 miles from where are now doesn't mean it's Marxism. It means the wealthy went on a bender the last 50 years and pushed this country back to the 1880s.

they're scared of socialism, "PC culture", and brown people.

They're scared of the word Socialism. They love the policies of universal health, a living wage, taxing Wall Street...but when people label it "Socialism" they get nervous. A reaction borne from the Cold War. Happily the younger generations aren't concerned with that label because they don't associate it with the Soviet Union, they associate it with Canada, Europe, Australia, Japan - you know, the rest of the civilized world.

As for not liking brown people, they somehow managed to vote for Obama twice so they might be better at putting aside those prejudices than you think.

I have this talk with my conservative evangelical boss all the time: let's say there are two kinds of error, alpha and beta. Alpha error is when we provide everybody decent circumstances but some people take advantage and freeload. Beta error is when we make people work and let everybody keep whatever they earn, so nobody can freeload, but there are some people who work as hard as they can but still get screwed.

My boss fixates on alpha error. It's what he worries about it. Any discussion of the relative merits of economic systems makes him leap to examples of freeloaders. I fixate on beta error. I am willing to pay the friction cost of having some people freeload as long as everybody who tries can have a good life.

I think this is the core difference between the two of us and he agrees. The fascinating thing to me is he's the one who has made a sincere commitment to follow Jesus' teachings and I'm the ostensibly morally ambiguous atheist. By all rights, we should be reversed.

Joe Biden: I am endorsed by the only black female senator in history

Kamala Harris: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I've only hear about this. How did she look? That must have been a moment.

I have been saying for years that until the Boomers die off Socialism is going to be the Boogeyman. It isnt right but it is the truth. And no amount of educating them at this point is going to change that. The only way to get them on board is to take away what they already have. No one wants to get rid of socialism if it is their socialism being taken away.

How hard is it for some young charismatic democratic socialist to say, "What would you call making sure our nation's children and veterans and elderly and sick get a fair shake? I call it Americanism!" Mic drop, the end.

They can say it until they are blue in the face...Boomer Dems are no better than Boomer GOPers they care about themselves first and a very distant second is anyone else.

Actually I think Bernie did end up winning the general election but Debbie Wasserman Schultz and the DNC screwed him over on Inauguration Day and arranged for Trump to take the oath instead. ;)

Boomers my as-s.

All generations are the same. Greatests and Boomers and Millenials and Gen Xers and whatever stupid marketing term is being applied to THE KIDS now (Zoomers?) are all the same. The idea that the year of your birth denotes a set-wide difference in a moral attribute is even stupider than astrology.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers VII: Bon Voyage Beto

I get it, you are a Boomer and totally hate that you are called selfish. You are also a Liberal and hate being called a mysoginist. Doesnt make them both untrue. ;)

All generations are awful, they arent all awful for the same reasons. Deal with it old man :D

(lazy, no account Gen Xer talking :D )

edit: if you arent a Boomer I am sorry for insulting you as such :)

We're the same generation* and thus you proved my point perfectly. :p

* Depending on how you define it. I have seen the B/X divide from anywhere between 1960 and 1965. I am Feb 63. I typically claim to be whatever generation the person I'm talking with is not, in order to end the interaction as quickly as possible.

I loved that Boomers are TEH DEBIL now because I can needle my older siblings who believe in that kind of hocus pocus. But my heart's not in it. People differ, but birth year's got nothing to do with it. Show me a trust fund kid from 1920, 1960, or 2000 and I'll show you the same as-shole.

Yeah they do the same to me...when they rework the generations they try and make me a Millennial which makes zero sense ;)

My father is a Boomer...his selfishness and my selfishness are two different things. That is my point. Boomer aged people see socialism as bad unless it helps them the younger generations see it for what it is.

I hope so. I've been buried up to my armpits in knucks at work for so long I see no difference at all between any of them no matter what year they tumbled off the turnip truck. I work with the grandkids of guys I worked with when I started and all three generations have a seizure when you mention redistributary taxation. There is zero generational difference on economics.

On social the grandparents were all racist, sexist, and homophobic, the parents were sexist and homophobic and the kids are homophobic. We are gradually dragging these orcs into the light of day, no thanks to their preachers who keep screaming about "the natural order" and other rightwing nonsense.
