2019 Frozen Four

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

What do they say about a good defense beating a good offense? We certainly saw evidence of that today. You knew going in that for the Gophers to disprove that they would need to take full advantage of their Grade A's because Wisconsin was not going to give you many of them. With a little puck luck it might have happened. Then again, the Gophers had some puck luck (and some great goaltending) in their defensive end, so maybe they used it all up there.

As others have said, it was Wisconsin's year. Congrats to them on a great season!

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

After giving up the second goal, I never really felt the urgency out of Minnesota that it would take to have a chance to come from two down against the Badgers. Wisconsin, obviously, is very good at never letting you string together the things that can build momentum, but this was definitely not an A level performance from the Gophers. The first goal in a Wisconsin game really is as important as your regular broadcaster would have you believe.

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

Wicked impressed with Wisconsin's defense. Minnesota couldn't get anything going. Well deserved title.

I had the privilege of standing on the railing on the concourse behind the goal Pank scored. Hoooo baby.

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

Nice to see a close game scoreboard wise. It was a good game, although I’m sure gopher fans would disagree.
Wisconsin moves the puck fast, blocks shooting lanes big time.
Minnesota is a great team, but the passing not the same as the Badgers, and too many individual effort attempts with the hope there might be a rebound etc after.
Crowd could have been better, but btn did a good job.
Maybe visit elementary schools in the area and hand out tickets or something to pack the rink.
Great Badger defence.

I thought it was more entertaining than the average UM/UW game, because it was more up tempo. Minnesota didn't play great, but much of that was due to the Badgers. Their back pressure was very good today, so a number of Minnesota's best looks never resulted in a shot. Ultimately, it was a couple of defensive letdowns that sunk the Gophers; not to say that there weren't other miscues on D, but Gulstene was able to save the others.

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

Congrats to the Badgers. Great performance both games this weekend.

Enjoyed watching and hoping the Big Ten continues to broadcast for years to come.

There was a pk in the 2nd right before the pk with a shorty that I thought was a turning point in the game. Big block by Buchbinder, then Another block by a different Badger and then a clear. Great stuff.

Great Badger defence.

I was at the game and I thought the crowd was pretty impressive, of the 3500 capacity there were maybe a few hundred empty seats.

Tough to hand out free tickets to a sold out game.

It was a very large crowd. The few hundred empty seats were misleading because a large portion (like me) appeared to forego their assigned seat in lieu of primo standing room. Perfect view of the ice from the railing all the way around.

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

I still have not seen it anywhere: does anyone know who made the all-tourney team? Campbell and Pankowski, obviously. Roque? Shaver? Schammel? A full Badger sweep?

Good grief.

The NCAA "gave up" the center ice logo in Madison last weekend for the Wisconsin/Syracuse NCAA Quarterfinal. The usual Flying W was in place. I don't recall an NCAA center ice logo at any of the other quarterfinal sites either. But if they were there, no marketing was accomplished with me; I have absolutely no memory of them. You're telling me this is a sacred cow? It isn't. Flexibility is possible. The NCAA got 100% of the space on the boards at LaBahn. The rink looked perfectly fine as a playoff site.

You never see the center ice logo for a pre Frozen Four game when held on a campus site. The NCAA understands that’s too much work. You will see them at the men’s regionals this weekend,

But for a Frozen Four, they rightfully demand it. It’s great marketing.

BTW, I attended the Boston FF you mentioned. Whoever made the decision to breach contractual terms and leave the Bruins' logo in place was wrong to do so. Quite honestly it was refreshing that someone challenged the NCAA on this. Again, though, they chose the wrong means.

And it cost them hosting Frozen Fours for a very long time. A contract is a contract. If you don’t like it, don’t sign the contract.

It showed up in a "notes" follow-up article in the WI State Journal - Pankowski, Roque, Schammel, defense Maddie Rolfes and Mekenzie Steffen, and Campbell.

Never say never! But you've mostly really come around. The NCAA is often rigid, and change comes at a glacial pace. But just as you now describe, pragmatic decisions are possible.

Boston probably missed one turn to host, thus doubling the wait time.

A contract is a contract. If you don’t like it, don’t sign the contract.
Of course.

IIRC, the Bruins played on the off day or on Sunday and the Garden didnt have the time to change logos.

IIRC, the Bruins played on the off day or on Sunday and the Garden didnt have the time to change logos.

Which they weren't allowed to do either, according to the contract. (It was the off day.)

It had nothing to do with not being able to change the logo. It had to do with nobody being allowed to use the ice during the Frozen Four weekend.

Like I said, Boston royally ****ed off the NCAA that year because they felt they were Boston and the NCAA would never dare skip over them for a future bid. Well, they were wrong. They got skipped over twice before they finally made amends.

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

They were rejected twice. So, they missed two cycles.
Lots of work goes into preparing a bid, so losing a round hurts. No doubt about it. But it's perfectly normal to have to bid more than once to get a tournament. IMHO, the real issue is the number of years between tournaments awarded.

Let's say the current era started in 1997, the first year that counts for a point in the Priority Lottery. Boston hosted in 1998, 2004 & 2015. IIRC, Boston is scheduled to host in 2022. What that says to me is that Boston should expect to host once every 6 or 7 years. In other words, one turn missed between '04 & '15.

The closest analogous site is St. Paul -- another college hockey hotbed. St. Paul hosted in 2002, 2011 & 2018. In one case a 9 year wait; in the other a 7 year wait.

Other repeat hosts, from 1997 forward: Milwaukee=9 year wait; Detroit=10 year wait; Pittsburgh=8 year wait; Tampa=4 year wait.

This isn't an exact science; all kinds of variables come into play. And yes, things were done differently pre-1997. But looking at the site selections for 1997 through 2022, I can't imagine Boston getting more than one additional tournament -- even if they had been on perfect behavior in 2004.

Re: 2019 Frozen Four

I've seen parts of two NCAA men's games today at two different sites, and both games the broadcasters have mentioned the not-great condition of the ice - soft, snowy, bumpy, taking extra time to 'set up' between periods, etc.

Of course, both ice sheets are recently installed, to be able to get 'NCAA' and tournament logos in place. Because the logos are the important part of the whole thing...

It's likely that the only way it will change is if the required signage would have a negative effect on a football or men's BB game. Even then, I doubt that the NCAA cares as long as a lot of ads can be sold to Geico and Pepsi Co.

I don't know how much of the BB tournament you have watched or usually watch, but the NCAA brings in to the hosting arenas their own floor (!), and it is completely 'generic'. That is, if they are at the Kohl Center, no "motion W", at the Barn, nothing at all that says UM or an "M" at center or "Gophers" below the base line. You turn a game on on TV, and there nothing at all to tell you where they are playing; each court looks exactly like every other. I really don't understand that one.
