2019 - 20 Rankings

Re: 2019 - 20 Rankings

USCHO Division I Women's Poll - December 2, 2019
Rnk Team (Last Poll)
1 Wisconsin (2)
2 Minnesota (1)
3 Northeastern (4)
4 Cornell (3)
5 Ohio State (6)
6 Princeton (5)
7 Clarkson (7)
8 Boston College (8)
9 Boston University (10)
10 Minnesota Duluth (9)
Others receiving votes: Mercyhurst 5, Robert Morris 5, Harvard 1

Movement at the top this week as Wisconsin replaces Minnesota by the slimmest of margins, 143 points to 142. Northeastern takes over the No. 3 spot while Cornell moves down one to No. 4. Ohio State continues its steady climb to No. 5. The WCHA now has three of its teams represented in the Top 5. Could this be a first for any league?

Harvard Why ?

Re: 2019 - 20 Rankings

Harvard Why ?

I keep feeling like UMD is being overrated. I haven't done the research enough to recommend the team to take their place but it seems like getting swept by Bemidji and losing to Q alone would keep them out of the Top Ten.

Re: 2019 - 20 Rankings

UMD is definitely a team with good wins and bad losses.

Re: 2019 - 20 Rankings

WIN singular
1-5-2 against top ten
UMD also has wins over Mercyhurst and Colgate, two teams in that next pack just outside of the top 10. So if we're saying, "If not the 'Dogs, then who?" it is less attractive to replace UMD by a team with an even shakier resume. In most years, there isn't one perfect answer about who should be #10 (even #9 or #8), and a case can be made for other options.

I suggest we follow the lead of the Big Ten and include 14 teams in the top ten. That would eliminate the close calls. Or, we could follow the lead of the Big Ten and include 7 teams in the top ten. That would eliminate the marginal teams.

given that the top CHA team is guaranteed a spot, those are the only ones that matter

8 thru 10 are just window dressing

how about Bemidji? they have a better record, plus as you mentioned, swept UMD

but if you look at the teams outside the top nine, which team would you say has the best chance to make the NCAA, and which has the best chance to win it?

I can't see any other team than UMD taking a conference tournament.
And if any of the 10 thru 36 made the tournament, IMO only UMD would have a legitimate shot at winning it

I would love to see Bemidji in the top 10 but their early season losses and ties with Lindenwood and Providence put them in a deep hole. If they can pull off, say, 3 wins out of their second half series with WI, MN, OSU & UMD - and beat who they’re supposed to - I think then there’s a case to put them in the top 10.

Re: 2019 - 20 Rankings

As another measure, KRACH right now isn't sold on Hockey East teams. It has Northeastern down at #7, which seems too low to me, and BC at #14 -- two spots below Bemidji.

Yeah that's DEFINITELY wrong. They have a bug somewhere. The strength of schedule numbers are in outer space (LIU played Wisconsin twice and their SOS is literally a decimal lol).

My calculator has NU in 5th: https://www.bcinterruption.com/bost...2019-2020-ncaa-womens-hockey-krach-calculator

I’m not suggesting they should be, just saying there is a case for them being ranked above UMD.

In fact, the same argument could be made with UM & UW, how can you rank UW above UM, when they have played two games and couldn’t win either of them? Anybody who saw those games knows which is the better team. I really don’t think either of those two teams deserve the #1 right now.
IMO, Cornell has the best argument for #1, a tie to Princeton, who Cornell came back to convincingly beat, and a loss to tOSU, and at this point, a loss to them doesn’t look like what it did earlier.
In any case, it is pretty tight at one thru four, IMO
tOSU has to beat UW to prove they are also in the top tier

USCHO Division I Women's Poll – January 6, 2020
Rnk Team (Last Poll)
1 Wisconsin (1)
2 Minnesota (2)
3 Northeastern (3)
4 Cornell (4)
5 Clarkson (6)

7 Princeton (7)

9 Harvard (NR)
10 Minnesota Duluth (10)
Others receiving votes: Boston College 8, Robert Morris 5, Providence 4

No change in the Top 4 since the last poll taken nearly a month ago on December 9th. Changes below those Top 4 include Clarkson moving into a tie at No. 5 with Ohio State, Harvard rejoining the poll at No. 9, and Boston College dropping out of the poll after having lost their last four games, including two to Hockey East rival Boston University.

I think UW UM and NE are all on equal ground.
